                       it had been a few weeks since ai and yusaku had been adopted by ryo and edo. ai still wasn’t used to being here, and he knew yusaku wasn’t either. he felt nervous around ryo and edo. he was always scared he would say or do the wrong thing and they would end up back in the orphanage. he didn’t want to mess things up for yusaku. he wanted things to be okay. 

                        edo and ryo seemed nice enough, but every time ai saw them, he remembered his birthparents. he remembered how they berated ai and yusaku. they called both of them burdens. they wouldn’t hesitate to raise a hand at either of them. ai was terrified that edo and ryo could be the same way. one wrong move and everything would shift. 

                         since edo and ryo seemed to be elsewhere, ai took this opportunity to go to the kitchen. he was feeling thirsty so he wanted something to drink. perhaps he shold also grab something to eat. he took a clean glass from the dishwasher and was about to check what was in the fridge when he heard footsteps approaching. he froze, the glass falling from his hands and shattering on the ground. he couldn’t even move. when he saw edo, apologies became spilling from his mouth, “i-i-i’m sorry...i’m s-sorry, edo-san, i’m sorry i--”

          ryo still wasn’t quite used to this. being...alive. he thought he had died--no, he had died, but came back...somehow. he didn’t understand how such a thing happened. though when he thought about it, his death was strange as well. he died because of his cyberdark deck... it seemed unbelievable, illogical even. so perhaps him coming back wasn’t so unthinkable when comparing the two. on top of that, many other people who were presumed to be dead also came back.

          it had only been a few days since he had woken up. the doctor, along with nurse ayakawa, had been helping him. he couldn’t go anywhere without a wheelchair. he wondered if he would always be like this. he felt restless. he didn’t like staying here. it was restricting. he wished he got more visitors, but most people seemed to be busy studying for exams. 

          he eyed his phone on the side table, grabbing it and thumbing through his contacts before pausing on a name. edo phoenix. he was alive too. fubuki and asuka told him that. he never asked, but they probably knew he was wondering about such things. they hadn’t spoken since returning to their world. ryo had watched a match of his while cooped up in his bed. he was glad to see edo was doing well. 

          he wanted to talk to him again. he missed him. it felt...weird to not have him here. he must have gotten too used to edo’s presence when they were in the dimension world together. ryo found it harder to sleep now, though he felt embarrassed to admit such a thing. before he changed his mind, he pressed the call button and brought the phone to his ear. he wasn’t sure what he was going to say, but he wanted to hear edo’s voice. 

                                 ryo had woken up while edo was gone, though had been too lazy to actually get up yet. in fact, he was about to go back to sleep when he heard their bedroom door open. “edo...?” isn’t he supposed to be at work by now? is he still here? ryo got his answer moments later, when edo sat next to him. the closeness wasn’t unfamiliar, but still he found himself blushing just a bit. the way he spoke caught ryo off guard. ryo-sama. edo had jokingly called ryo that a few times when they were in the dimension world. back then, edo pretended to be ryo’s butler.
