Jon's first mark is the eye over his heart. He's just woken up after spending the night at Georgie's flat, and he finds her leaning up on an elbow and looking down at him with a pensive frown.

"Looks like this wasn't it, huh?" she gestures (but doesn't touch, it's taboo to touch someone's marks without permission) to the eye that wasn't there last night when they went to sleep.

"I'm- I'm sorry Georgie." Jon really is, he loves her, and he knows she loves him too. She has to, in order to give him chance after chance when he continues to not be enough.

They keep trying for a while anyways, none of them give the concept of soulmates much credit. In the end when they break up it's for something completely unrelated to the eyes that keep popping up on Jon's skin.

He's taken to wearing gloves and long sleeves to avoid the attention; whoever his soulmate is, they clearly didn't spare a thought to the fact that Jon would look ridiculous with his tattoos.

Jon is getting ready for bed one night, and he pulls his shirt over his head to find twin scars on his chest, in the shape of crescent moons. He spends hours examining them in the mirror, running his fingers over the smooth skin, and hoping that whoever they are, they feel more like themselves now.

It takes years before he finds them, and then a bit more for them to get together.

"We thought you didn't want them, you know?" Gerry asks one night as they huddle together in bed.

"Hm?" Jon's not really paying attention, tracing a finger over the ghost of Martin's scars on Gerry's chest.

"The marks." Martin says, and Jon looks up to find he's holding Gerry's right hand on his own. The shiny, smooth skin of the burn mark sends a pang of guilt through Jon's stomach, even though he knows they didn't feel his pain. "We thought you were trying to get rid of them."

"Oh. No, I-" Jon feels his face flushing. "Just an accident with some hot coffee." He'd been surprisingly sad, when his bandages came out for the last time and he'd found all the eyes melted off his right hand.

"Yeah, it didn't take us long to notice we were just bonded to someone with awful luck." Gerry smirks, running his thumb over the scar on Martin's shoulder.

"I'm sorry." Jon rolls his eyes. "Next time my ex's girlfriend tries to stab me, I'll ask her to think of my soulmates first."

"That would be very considerate." Martin grins.

"Yes. Imagine having an inconsiderate soulmate, just getting marks all nilly-willy-" Jon's forced to stop in the middle of his tirade, when Gerry leans down to catch his lips in a kiss. Martin chuckles in the background, and Jon feels like his chest will burst.

"A real ass." Gerry grins once they break apart, his grin entirely unapologetic. "But at least he has great taste."

"Does he now?" Martin arches an eyebrow with an amused smile.

"You know what? I actually think he does." Jon shrugs. "It's you and I that have low standards, I suppose."
