WEST MEMPHIS MURDERS: THE BRIDGE TO THE ROBIN HOOD WOODS - West Memphis, Arkansas. Pictured: The pipe bridge to the former Robin Hood Woods (aka the Robin Hood Hills) in West Memphis. On May 5th, 1993, three West Memphis 8-year-old boys: Steve Branch, Michael Moore and Christopher Byers - all good friends, classmates and fellow Cub Scouts - crossed this pipe bridge to explore and play in the wooded area on the other side. They were last seen alive near this location. Their bound and naked bodies were found the next day - submerged in a drainage ditch - just a few hundred feet into the woods from this entryway. Two bicycles that the boys were riding were found in the muddy waters on either side of this crossing. Believing the murders to be ritual in nature, local police investigative efforts soon focused on a trio of teenaged delinquents who had reputations for extreme and shocking behavior and an obsession with occultism: Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin and Jessie Misskelley, Jr. Subsequent (and controversial) trials soon ensued which resulted in murder convictions for the three accused and sentences of life for Baldwin and Misskelley - and death for Echols. Considering the convictions of the trio to be unjust, anti-death penalty advocates, Hollywood celebrities and musicians took up freeing the “West Memphis 3” as a social-political cause. Documentaries, films, books and benefit concerts were devoted to this effort. Due to the controversy and cause-celeb, the WM3 were released in 2011 after an unusual deal was made with the state - free, but still technically guilty. Theories abound as to who murdered the three boys if the convicted didn’t. Thusly, this “solved” homocide still remains a mystery with the case in a curious limbo. Who the boys encountered that day is yet unknown - the woods are gone and all that remains is this rusting bridge that bore witness to the murderous secrets of that tragic day.
