"Really? You don't think it's gross?"
Frazie shrugs. "I mean, I kinda do," she admits, "but you like it, so I figure I could at least give it a chance." She does a flip on the fence with casual ease, and Lizzie's face twists into a silly grin against her will.
Dion's okay, and it's nice to know someone who understands, but Frazie is just... wow. And really cool. And if she's willing to sit with Lizzie and watch some killer special effects, well, how can Lizzie say no?
They can't use the VHS player in the dorms, not after—
"It's snuff! It's gross and you shouldn't be watching it!"
—ugh, Lizzie does not want to think about Norma right now. So she doesn't, and meets Frazie again at the library the next day where they can ask for one of the study rooms and borrow one of the TVs with a VHS player. And Lizzie's kind of nervous, because Frazie's just so cool and she really wants this to go well—
And it looks like Frazie's kind of nervous, too, so after Lizzie puts the tape in she sits down next to her with a casual shoulder nudge. "I'm gonna talk your ear off about the editing and the effects," she warns, "so if you wanna back out, now's the time."
Frazie snorts. "Just play it already!"
So Lizzie does. She put a lot of thought into which set of videos to start with, a lot of thought into which would be the best ones to show off everything she loves about Devildare, and horror movies in general. The sawmill's a good start, she thinks, full of creativity and really good editing—
Frazie has gone very, very still.
Lizzie pauses the video with a burst of telekinesis the moment she notices. "Fraze? You uh... you okay?"
"That's..." Frazie reaches out, and the video starts up again, Devildare laughing nervously behind his mask as the sawblade inches closer, closer, then the cut from performer to prop just before it touches his head—
"That's Dion."
What.
The sawblade cuts the prop in half, the camera lingering on the aftermath, moving up to look down at the revealed fake innards. But Frazie's breath is short and unsteady, and what seemed so exciting and well-done to Lizzie before now looks... real. Very, very real.
Lizzie moves the pause the video, but Frazie bats her hand down. It's almost ironic, that Lizzie was hoping to share her perspective on this, only to find herself understanding why others dislike it, but—
Frazie stands. The video's paused on a frame of Devildare's prop body crushed under a heavy log, head out of frame—but wow, now that Lizzie looks she can see the resemblance in build and—not the time.
"...Frazie?" Hands clenched into fists, mouth twisted in a close-lipped grimace, eyes darting to the screen and back again—Lizzie stands, and flicks the TV off, hand ghosting over Frazie's shawl unsure if a steady hand on her shoulder will help or not. "Why don't we, uh, sit down? Breathe a little? ...are you sure that's your brother?" Wait, no, bad, c'mon Lizzie don't put your foot in your mouth NOW—
"I—" Frazie takes several breaths. Her shoulders slump, and her expression drops. "I'm fine. I just..." she pulls away. "I'm going home."
"Oh." So much for connecting with the cute acrobat. "Sorry, I didn't know—" Lizzie swallows.
"It's... fine," Frazie offers, in a tone that says otherwise. "I just... talk to you tomorrow?"
"Oh... okay." Lizzie nods. It's... well, it's not really a defeat, but—
Frazie leaves the room, and it sure feels like one.

They use phone calls to set up meetings, and often those meetings are when they film new Devildare stuff. Phone bills are expensive, though, so they mostly communicate through letters.
Donatella thinks it's nice that Dion has a pen pal, and while she doesn't pry beyond "is it a girl, is she interested in you?" she does know that the letters often mention dangerous spots near whatever town the Aquatos are in, often warning against going there. It all seems perfectly innocuous, so there's not really a reason to question it.
A more ridiculous version of Corpse Drag where Dion becomes a niche performer known as Devildare, The Immortal Stuntman.
"Niche" because the gimmick is that he dies in every video. Ethical snuff, if you will. The videos range from actual impressive stuntwork to "what does it look like if a guy gets bisected by a sawmill"—if it's dangerous and potentially bloody, Devildare will do it. And then show off the results as best as a 1980s camcorder can capture.
He garners a fairly sizeable following—especially considering the nature of his art (death & gore) and the time period (pseudo-80s with mid-to-late-90s internet), though Dion's not actually aware of just how big he's gotten because he leaves handling the website and selling the videos to his business partner.
Dion gets away with it largely because most Devildare fans think the supposed immortality is just an elaborate ruse. It's clearly the same guy in every video, the gore must be special effects, it's not real snuff! It's just a guy who's good at practical effects.
Mm. Devildare. Dion thinks that he and Carter are operating on a 50/50 split of the profits, Carter thinks that since he already has a steady IT job that it's a 90/10 split in favor of Dion. Carter's holding onto the money anyway so this miscommunication never gets addressed (many such cases 😔).
