Why Device Detection is an important Feature in #Sitecore?

Sitecore 8.1 provided subscription-based service in Sitecore App Center, “Device Detection”.

This now provides fully integrated Device Detection platform. Once devices are detected then they can be used with specific custom device layouts for specific device properties.

This provides additional way to personalize experience based on device using rules in the Rule Set Engine

It sucks, but there's no avoiding it sometimes. Autolayout betrays you for quadrillionth time (on that given day), springs and struts are as much use as a one legged man at an arse kicking competition and you sigh – you know you have to fall back to the good ol' device detection macro.

But there's so many of them on the mighty Internet! Which one is the best one, which one is the fastest one? Well, fear not, I've got you covered. The following macro will tell you whether your beautiful app is running on a retina or a non-retina display (people still use these?) and, more importantly, if the device is iPhone 5 and newer or iPhone 4S and older.

I know this link won't be for everyone, but if you run a blog using the wordpress API, you will probably want to check this out. I've been working on this plugin as part of my placement over the summer. Basically it allows you to modify your site based on what device the user is connecting from. More and more people are using device detection, but as little as 30% of websites have tailored their devices to mobile, while mobile traffic makes up 20% of all total web hits. Basically this means that potentially 70% of websites are alienating a fifth of their connecting users.

I've been working on an open source device detection API for a local company for most of the Summer. I've written all the code and the documentation for it. It would mean a lot to me if I could get some clicks from you guys, maybe even some downloads if you know C code and what to do with it :)

Alternatively, if you run a website and want any other form of device detection (C#, Java, PHP etc) check around the main site here. We're a great (and free!) alternative to WURFL and DeviceAtlas.

After viewing the source code of the Wunderlist website i noticed that the also have classes for devices and browsers like mac, windows, chrome, firefox and stuff. So i searched the internet and found this great solution for device and browser detection.
