A letter to the family.

To my loving parents,

It’s your favorite child, Julius writing. I just wanted to update you guys on this hell hole you got me in but I don’t feel like you guys deserved to hear my voice. This whole experience is trash and it’s not like it saved me from the situation in Detroit, the people I was involved with got to me down here so thanks for nothing. Some good shit came out of this though. I’ve made some friends, I met a girl, and Logan is here too. I guess tio got tired of his shit too. But it’s not like you’d care how we were doing here. Don’t expect to hear from me in a while, I’m too busy proving you guys wrong. Oh, by the way, I’ll send an invoice for time loss from work due to my injuries. Thanks.

“Angie, come over here and help me up.” I walked over to my grandmother to help her get in the kitchen and cook din din. “Granny, you know tonight some girlfriends and I are going to look at dresses for Homecoming. I won’t be out too late, but I probably won’t be able to make curfew.” “That’s fine Angie! *coughs to clear her throat* Thanks for telling me ahead of time, so I won’t stay up waiting. “So, how are you and Brandon?” Raven asked me. “We doing good. We’re serious about moving in together after high school. He doesn’t want to go to college, but he knows about my plans of going to nursing school.” Raven looked at me and gave me the ‘best friend I got some tea to tell you’. “What Raven, what’s up?” 

“Ang, you know how I make up that math class after school, right? So, as I’m walking down the hallway I saw Brandon with Jayla up against a lock. He saw me coming and cut it short with her. I walked up to her to ask what that was all about? She informed me that her and Brandon has been messing around since the summer and that ...” Raven looked at me - right in my eyes. “She told me that she was two months pregnant.”

Brandon and I had been together since freshmen year of high school. He was my best friend. my everything. and he made it seem that I was that to him. After this day, everything changed. I applied to colleges in New York because Detroit didn’t have anything for me anymore. My parents got shot in a drive-by. They were taking the groceries out the car while I was in the doorway. My grandmother took me in, but she needed me just as much as I needed her. She had a lot of health problems, so it didn’t surprise me that she passed two days after my graduation. I stayed with Raven until I moved to NYC.
