Rudra is a Rigvedic deity, associated with wind or storm, Vayu and the hunt. It is usually derived from the Proto-Indo-European (PIE) root rud- (related to English 'rude') which means 'to cry, howl'. The name Rudra may thus be translated as 'the roarer'.

An alternative etymology suggested that Rudra as the 'red one', the 'brilliant one', possibly derived from a lost root rud-, 'red' or 'ruddy', or alternatively 'shining'. He is called 'the archer' and the arrow is an essential attribute of Rudra.

In the Rigveda, Rudra has been praised as the "mightiest of the mighty". Rudra is the personification of 'terror'. Depending on the periodic situation, Rudra can be meant as the most severe roarer/howler (could be a hurricane or tempest) or the most frightening one. In the Rigvedic verse implying that Rudra is the eliminator of evil as well as the usherer of peace.

The Hindu god Shiva shares several features with the Rudra: the theonym Shiva originated as an epithet of Rudra, the adjective shiva ("kind") being used euphemistically of Rudra.

Shiva and Rudra are viewed as the same personality in Hindu scriptures. The two names are used synonymously. Rudra, the god of the roaring storm, is usually portrayed in accordance with the element he represents as a fierce, destructive deity.

The word rudra can simply mean 'the number eleven'. The word rudraksha in Sanskrit means 'eye of Rudra', is used as a name for both the berry of the Rudraksha tree, and a name for a string of the prayer beads made from those seeds.

ルドラ、数字の１１の神さま

ルドラは、インド神話に登場する暴風神である。その名は「泣く、吠える」を意味する語根 rud（英語のrude/無礼な）に由来し、「咆哮を上げる者」「叫ぶ者」を意味する。

ルドラの姿は、赤褐色の肉体に黄金の装身具を着け、弓矢を持つという。また、「ヴァジュラを持つ者」といわれることもある。リグ・ヴェーダによると、ルドラは「最強中の最強な神」と崇められ、「恐怖」の化身である。 風水害をもたらす反面慈雨をもたらし大地に豊穣を呼び込むモンスーンの神格化と考えられている。人々がその怒りを恐れる、強力で荒ぶる神であるが、聡明さと優しさを兼ね備え、人々の健康・安寧を保障する存在でもある。

リグ・ヴェーダのルドラに対する形容詞「シヴァ」（「吉祥な」の意味）は、’1度だけみられるもの’が引用され、また古代ヴァーダの教典・ウパニシャッドでも、ルドラは形容詞のシヴァを添えられるようになる。このように、時代が進むにつれてルドラはシヴァ神とたびたび関連づけられる。

プラーナ文献の中には、シヴァが語る言葉の中に「私の化身であるルドラ」という表現すら確認されている。そしてヒンドゥー教神話の時代になると完全にシヴァと同一視された。つまりルドラはシヴァの前身である。
