Most people walk to the nearest road, which could be a few KM, few days or as the case is in winters a few months away. So most people walk as they don't have the luxury of Metro, cars, bikes etc. in the villages. So one question I had in mind was why is #HornbillFestival called #Hornbill festival. Well, I guess the image here answers that? Hornbill bird is revered by Naga Tribes and they wear Hornbill feathers proudly in their headgear. The emblem of the festival is the Greater Indian Hornbill a magnificent bird that I am yet to photograph in its full glory. Most visitors stay in the arena at the #HornbillFestival, but I would also suggest to go and visit some of the villages nearby and interact with the wonderful local folks. At the bare minimum check the Morungs at the Kisama Village where each tribe sets up their Morung where the recreate their village communal space, just like back home. In the Naga Villages, a Morung is the community place where mostly men meet & talk about their day to day affairs, kind of the Naga version of the Golf Clubs & Country Clubs of the Urban world. I was lucky to be invited into some of the Morungs both at the festival venue as well as at some of the villages we went for a photo walk with my friends at @darterphoto. Though I was told Morungs are for men, the few Morungs I went I saw women also actively participating there. Ladakh 12/15 Naropa festival brought me face to face with remote tribes of Ladakh. Harsh climate & the inaccessible terrain has ensured that the traditional attire, costumes, and traditions remain intact even after thousands of years as external influences were limited. Some of the Ladakh tribals trace their ancestry to Alexander's Army, others to central Asian tribes. Ladakh 6/15 Sometimes even a monk is in a hurry, especially when he is running away from paparazzi. But trust me i was not even trying to click him, I was concentrating on the rich colors of the Hemis Monastery and struggling with camera settings to get the bright sky also in its azure magnificence in the frame. In rushed the monk in and out of frame in a split second, but lucky me I got my shot better than I had conceived it. From ash smeared Naga Sadhus to pilgrims taking a holy dip in the icy cold waters of Ganga Maiya, you will find middle India in full form on Dev Diwali. If you are not aware of what is Dev Diwali may I suggest a trip on Dev Diwali with @darterphoto this Dev Diwali that will show you Benaras like never before. This image was clicked early evening on Dev Diwali on Assi Ghat when the students of BHU were decorating the Ghats with handmade posters and oil lamps to be lit later in the evening. Once the lamps are lit then the Ghats are in their full glory making even heavans feel in awe of the illuminated ghats. But that is another picture and another story. So I asked " Bhai Saheb" What you do in the Mango Orchard so he mentioned, " I take care of the Mangoes" !!! Well if I had trees full of mangoes I would also be sitting all day under them making sure nobody steals my mangoes. Loved meeting this little munchkin at the famed Rataul Mango Orchard, where I visited with famed historian & storyteller Sohail Hashmi.
