Like last year, there’s a Sableye that’s following Iris. Just following her—oh! It’s pulling out a…it’s a little gem! A ruby. Awww.

"O-Oh..! Hello again..!" Iris kneels down in front of the Sableye, after realizing that she was being followed. "You are the s..same one from l-last year, aren't you..?"
So, that probably meant that this Sableye was wild and didn't have a trainer to begin with.. it still didn't answer the question of why specifically this Sableye was following her. She only had one ghost type so she wasn't a specialist or an occultist by any means (though her aunt was, but that doesn't count here).
Her thoughts are stopped as the ruby is presented to her.
"I-Is this.. for me..?" Iris asks, carefully taking the ruby into her hands. "Are y-you thanking me for last year..? Y-You don't have to do that.. it was a pleasure to be with you last year.."
She looks the gem over, and smiles at the Sableye.
"B-but I appreciate it all the same, and.. I...I'm glad that you're alright." Putting the gem away in a safe spot. "S..soo... how about we walk around again? F-For old times sake of course.."
