Derek Lernerâs intricately drawn âAVEX1-6(station)â (2017) at the Avenue X station (F) in Brooklyn references the geographic location of the station and its cartographic relation to the cityâs circulatory transportation network. Lerner brings his lyrical abstract ink drawings to White Plains in the âDATAISMâ exhibition now on view at Arts Westchester Gallery, which features artists in the tristate region who use forms of collected data in their artwork.Â

Derek Lerner makes drawings from photos taken by drones. His bird's eye views take us to imaginary places both menacing and beautiful. The Brooklyn Rail article rightly says "Entering the galleryâs main space, one is engulfed by a sea of blue".
Gema Ălava a spanish artist who often guides visitor through the Met museum, would like us to consider where we observe things and people and where we are observed. She will ofter draw from images of surveillance cameras. Here she draws the ny subway platforms, a place we new yorkers often find ourselves observing and observed.
