Reposted from @super.black.girls “She was called Phillis, because that was the name of the ship that brought her, and Wheatley, which was the name of the merchant who bought her. She was born in Senegal. In Boston, the slave traders put her up for sale: “She’s seven years old! She will be a good mare!” She was felt, naked, by many hands. At thirteen, she was already writing poems in a language that was not her own. No one believed that she was the author. At the age of twenty, Phillis was questioned by a court of eighteen enlightened men in robes and wigs. She had to recite texts from Virgil and Milton and some messages from the Bible, and she also had to swear that the poems she had written were not plagiarized. From a chair, she gave her long examination, until the court accepted her: she was a woman, she was black, she was a enslaved , and she was a poet.” Phillis Wheatley, was the first African-American writer to publish a book in the United States.. . .#georgefloyd #icantbreathe #breonnataylor #jacobblake #ahmaudarbery #elijahmcclain #justiceforgeorgefloyd #nojusticenopeace #derekchauvin #blacklivesmatter #jisticeforgeorgefloyd #justiceforrashardbrooks #georgefloyd🙏 #islandthillermagazine #blm #vybzkartelappeal #policebrutality #islandthriller #derekchauvinmurderedgeorgefloyd #sayhisname #vybzkartelvines_ #addiditeacha #justiceforbreonnataylor #meagantheestallion #blackexellence #defundthepolice #blackoutday2020 #vybzkartelvine #ofdonsanddivas #dancehallhero https://www.instagram.com/p/CWRGB5alYjB/?utm_medium=tumblr
VIA #NewsOne: "The name of the police officer in Minneapolis who was seen on a viral video apparently kneeling on a Black man’s neck until he died has been identified. A report in the Minneapolis Star Tribune revealed that the officer’s name is Derek Chauvin, according to “two sources familiar with the investigation.” The man who died, George Floyd, was identified on Tuesday by civil rights attorney Benjamin Crump, who tweeted that Chauvin “killed” him. The Star Tribune found that “records and news accounts show that Chauvin has been involved in at least three police-involved shootings over his career with the MPD: Wayne Reyes in 2006, and Leroy Martinez and Ira Latrell Toles, both in 2011.” Police spokesman John Elder told the Star Tribune that the restraint technique using Chauvin’s knee was not part of the department’s training. “In my years as an officer, that would not be what I would ever consider a chokehold,” Elder said. The other officer on the scene had not been officially identified as of late Tuesday morning. But social media reports said his name is Tou Thao. After handcuffing Floyd for purportedly committing forgery, Chauvin was showing on video applying pressure to the Floyd’s neck while cavalierly putting his hands in his own pockets. He was aware of the growing crowd and all of the witnesses with their cellphones out filming the episode and still didn’t feel the need to stop what users on social media described as a murder." • • #DerekChauvin #GeorgeFloyd #unheardvoicesmag #minneapolis #minneapolispolice #policebrutality #police #JusticeforFloyd #JusticeforGeorgeFloyd #sayhisname #TouThao https://www.instagram.com/p/CAqSqjwFkaQ/?igshid=1c8bu00fovm91

What’s the point of a democracy if the we aren’t heard? Until police redefine their training to become more sensitive to the conditions and relationships of ALL of us citizens, conflicts and protests have to arise. How will you speak up against injustice?
