It had felt too much like intrusion, too much like stumbling on to a secret that he wasn’t meant to know, so he just swallowed down the lump in his throat and kept moving.

Stiles was a ghost. Or invisible. Or something. No one could see or hear him. He couldn’t interact with the world.
So I’m re-reading some favorite old Sterek-y fan fiction (one in which they’re partners but Derek’s ace) and I’ve had a sudden realization. Which I feel a little stupid not realizing sooner. Derek is only meant to be about 24. Most fic I read and the show itself (what little I watched) treats him like this Certified Adult in amongst the teenagers. Now a relationship between a 24 yr old and a 16 yr old in real life would be deeply wrong (I’ve had my share of May-December romances, dont at me, I know what I’m saying). This isn’t about that at all. I’ve just realized how YOUNG Derek actually is. To be facing all he’s faced, to be the only semi-sane, semi-responsible adult in all these situations. I just turned 30, which only feels weird when I start thinking about shit like this, but 24 is so young! I know plenty of people have family’s and whatnot by that age, but lord. I barely even knew who I was yet. I certainly didn’t have a career sorted or my ptsd and depression dealt with in any good way. My mom was still paying my phone bill and I was on her insurance. And those things are privileges to be sure. But so often I see Derek written from the perspective of these kids as if he’s all grown up, when in fact his brain isn’t even finished developing yet! He has no clue! And he’s traumatized beyond all belief, and completely alone in the world dealing with supernatural insanity and teenaged antics and I just... my gods. He’s in so far over his head not just with alpha stuff but any of it. And now I need some serious *Derek really should still be in the exploring and fucking up and figuring himself out phase but all these godforsaken children think he’s a grown up even though he still feels 16 himself and he’s trying not to let them see how completely much he just wants to go be an irresponsible kid again and only have to worry whether the leftovers he forgot in his fridge are still good* fic. And if I can’t find one I may have to write it. (Also it’s worth noting that this isn’t helped by the fact that Tyler Hoechlin really does look like a whole grown man. I mean what was he in that, 35??)

this one hit me so hard in the feels that even though I don’t much care for most of the Teen Wolf series, i had to share this.
here’s the summery even though it doesn’t do the fic justice:

just so you know? I actually cried while reading this fic. It so hit me in the feels, and i agree with Sheriff Stalinski, Derek needs so damn much therapy.
