Klavigar + Ion and COTBG + Derdekeas sexuality and gender head cannons bc I’m bored
Most of these will have long explanations attached. If you don’t care for that, I will have the names bolded and big, then the HC verbatim right under it ^^
Grand Karcist Ion
Pansexual
Agender and intersex — any pronouns (usually They/Them)
Ion is a lot of things; “Labeled” is not one of them. They don’t care for gender, the only reason They were consider male is because of what it mostly looked like. They don’t particularly care for pronouns, which is the main reason They don’t get upset at being called “it” in one of my fics. I don’t think agender is a great label for them, since it doesn’t fully match what They would’ve considered Themselves 3000+ years ago, but it’s kinda close. Same thing with attraction. They care much more for personality than appearance, and even then, it’s a very low bar. When The get close to something it’s a gabble if They will feel anything romantic. They love the human body’s form, and find all forms appealing.
Klavigar Saarn
Asexual demiromantic
Demigirl — She/They
Saarn is like the opposite of Ion. Attraction does not even register, and she usually figures out what is attractive by comparing conventions. She is Demiromantic, but not really close enough to anyone. The Klavigar and Ion are like her family rather than possible romantic partners. I have a HC that Lovataar really struggles to understand why Saarn is not that interested and asked a lot in Adytum, like whether she wanted to spend time with this nice person or go talk to that pretty person. Gender wise she doesn’t care, but enjoys some femininity. No urge to change her body to be more masculine or anything, she’s rather happy with it. Well, was, back when she could look the way she wanted. Lizard.
Klavigar Nadox
Asexual homoromatic
Cis male — He/Him
The idea of sex is very disturbing for Nadox, I imagine, and so believe he wouldn’t necessarily feel attraction to a person. However, he does love emotional intimacy and craves connection, which he prefers with men. This is not due to a distrust of women, it simply what he finds ideal and comfortable. Him and Lovataar are still very much close. Gender wise he is cis. He had to deal with demasculization and so is very firm about his status as a man. Being with Derdekeas, who also lacks that part of his body, is helpful.
Klavigar Orok
Bisexual with a preference for women
Transgender FTM — He/Him
Okay I honestly didn’t think about Orok being transgender until very recently, and I kinda think the idea adds an extra layer of complexity to his backstory—being the child of a chieftain. I imagine he would’ve justified it with being like his father, and then from there he simply found comfort in being considered a man. Then, once he could properly manipulate his body, he actually made himself physically male. There are some other things I think it would affect, but I am not trans and I do not think I have a good enough grasp of the history and do not want to be insensitive. Sexuality wise, he doesn’t consider it a massive factor but does prefer women from a physical standpoint.
Klavigar Lovataar
Pansexual
Cis — any pronouns but usually she/her
She loves everyone, and out of anyone else she is the one who has taken the most lovers. There honestly isn’t that much to say about her. She’s cis, but doesn’t really care for pronouns so it’s whatever. Thats all. I love her though
Robert Bumaro
Gay asexual
Cis — He/Him or any
Robert, again, does not really care about gender. He dresses how he wants, looks how he wants, and acts how he believe Mekhane wants him to. He considered himself a man because that’s what he’s used to.
I want to quickly say: This is a personal thing, I really like when a male character is just allowed to be feminine without it always being some other relationship to women or a kink—whether that be because “oh, they must be closeted trans because no way a MAN would want to dress like that.” or, and this is much more common “oh sexy femboy” which really pisses me off because we can’t just have fem characters without sexualization. I know a lot of people consider him trans, and that’s great! Representation is great. I just like seeing a male character in a position of power be feminine, since that’s uncommon.
Sexuality wise, he knows he is gay and doesn’t really have a problem with it in a human since. From my research (which please correct me on if I’m wrong) homosexual relationships were mostly between an older man and younger man, as a sort of mentor thing, alongside heterosexual relationships. However, that was not until after Mycenaean Greece or the Bronze Age area. But I wonder if Mekhanite cultures laid the seeds for that in this universe, since it makes sense with the general social detachment from sexuality. If two people act in love during a mentoring relationship then that just because of the Flesh, and it’s just as bad as heterosexual. So I think he kinda thinks that’s the standard and didn’t have any reason to question differently. Now, he’s Mekhane’s ichor! He can’t do that, he shouldn’t have any opinions on romance! What a horrible distraction.
Saint Hedwig
Lesbian
AI: agender, naturally
Current personality: Female
Now, I don’t know as much about Hedwig as I should to say anything much, but I think the AI has to change source identities on a semi regular basis (probably every couple hundred years) just to ensure complete clean up and adaptability to new societies. While it could technically just update the old personality, it is far easier to pick a time appropriate one and gives the opportunity to delete unnecessary memories. Sexuality wise the AI got a little too invested in this personality and ended up developing additional processing abilities. She doesn’t know this, but will learn in a rude way in my AU. Again, please don’t skin me, I need to read more.
Legate Trunnion
Lesbian
Cis — she/he (NOT “it” she will just fucking kill you)
Legate Trunnion has to deal with a whole lotta sexism, and while I think she is still blindly loyal to the church, she wants to have as much respect as possible in her role. So, what does she do? Make people talk to her like a man “sir” “he” dressing masculine, all that jazz. She is still a woman but wants power and kinda likes the way masc clothes look, but if you were to ask her she would say she loves nothing but Mekhane and then put a Musket in your eyeballs.
Legate Derdekeas
Gay asexual
Cis/trans — he/it
I always think it’s funny including him in these. “Woah, look at all those leaders of insanely powerful being” then we got pity spare Derdekeas who proceeded to then date the guy who pity spared him, going against all his morals, just because he was lonely. Anywho, he is a case where it makes me wonder if women ever requested to be men while undergoing standardization (is that still what we call the ancient Mekhanite process or just the Orthodox?). Greece was INCREDIBLY sexist to my knowledge, and so it would make sense for some women to want to be changed for status or respect, or just for the ability to be changed at all. I’m also sure some did it for a new social status. I’ve thought about that for Derdekeas but idk. Sexuality wise, similar story to Bumaro. It was just normal to him. That’s why he was fine having a relationship with Nadox, the man was much older and wiser and so Derdekeas thought of it as a normal relationship.
Bumaro and Derdekeas both being very confused as time passes and suddenly gay people aren’t supposed to be real anymore.
Goodness, that was a lot. Thank you for reading! I’m really curious on what other people think too, so if you need a reason to post your HCs I’d like to hear ^^
context → my canon is like SO all over the place, my interpretation sarkicism is based in the in memoria adytum canon, but the creation of the modern-day cotbg follows the storyline presented in redtape/gold proposal. in my canon, trunnion (aka preserver, who is the bronze age war general of the mekhanite empire, prior to the church schism where the empress ran away) & derdekeas are siblings, who reunited after keas left nadox during a fight. they live together and are both legates in the cogwork orthodoxy, though trunnion is trying so desperately to move herself up to a schematist to no avail. her struggles pile onto each other as derdekeas admits that he will be leaving to see nadox again for Sukanta, and that she needs to report back to amoni ram to rebuild MEKHANE
i really only write for myself so i doubt i’ll be posting much of my writing on here, but IF this gets attention and people rlly like it than i’ll finish writing this and post the full thing! i’ve wrote a lot more than this for this specific fic but i don’t want to throw everything down on this post yet cuz idk how it’ll do :3
ok finally here’s my slop #myslop ↓
—————————————————————————
Derdekeas slipped into the kitchen silently, with only a pang on the floor from his feet giving him away. He was holding a letter. Trunnion stiffened in her seat and dropped her pen before contemplating the action; she knew what this meant.
Sukanta is the ten-day celebration of Nälkän independence from the Daeva, if she is recalling correctly. It’s celebrated with gift giving and large feasts, like the heathen’s Christmas, but much longer, and, might she add, significantly more insufferable. And it is coming up.
“Nadox sent me a letter,” Derdekeas says, with as much melancholy as his metal voice can muster up. He sits down vertical to Trunnion, sliding the letter across to her. She doesn’t pick it up, barely even looks.
“Through a carrier pigeon,” he adds. “I mean, who even has carrier pigeons anymore? I haven’t seen one of those since MEKHANE knows when!”
“Really.” Trunnion’s tone implied no question, despite the nature of her comment. Frankly, she wasn’t surprised by this outcome, Nadox has been trying to invite Deredekeas to their Sukanta dinner for years now, always with the same apologetic tone about leaving him behind and I won’t do that again and it’s a promise—
And to the Nevermeant with that pathetic, accursed excuse of a human! What a zealot! What a liar! Wrapping his words in cellophane and frill and flesh, with his obnoxious script of swirls and disgusting organic shapes; just who does he think he is, trying to steal her brother, her best friend and roommate, the only other survivor of MEKHANE’s Kiss, away from her? She had thought that she killed him along with all of the other Sarkites who overstepped their place at that final battle. She would barely have minded if her brother was thirsting over a newer convert to the Nälkän faith, but this… this is different. Nadox is Klavigar, for Goddess’s sake! This is no ordinary run-of-the-mill karcist she has to deal with her brother running away with. How could Nadox—no, both of them, do this to her?
And she can’t even complain, because Derdekeas will go on about what about Hedvig, what about Bumaro? What about them? A heretic is better than a blasphemer, at least you can try to change their ways! Trunnion is right where she needs to be, at the right hand of her Emperor and Empress; the heart, the mind and the soul. They are colleagues— friends! Why does Derdekeas doubt her so?
No, I’m…
“…thinking of going this time,” Trunnion hears him say, but that couldn’t have been his whole sentence.
“What?”
“Nadox— he asked me to join him for Sukanta. Only one of the nights, just for dinner. He apologized for leaving me behind and acting so crass over the past few years—and, please, he really meant it this time. And I was thinking of going. You can come too, if you don’t trust me to go alone.”
“I don’t want you to go.” Trunnion was surprised to hear her own voice speak, far before she was ready to. No matter, she could barely hear her voice over the grating sound of her rapid ticking anyways. Goddess, how she hated that machine in her gut, and the loud, obnoxious noise it would always produce when she felt nauseous.
Derdekeas stopped fidgeting with the letter and took to staring at his sister for almost five painful seconds. “…Okay. Okay, Trunnion. That’s okay. Why not?”
Her eyes go wide. She hadn’t even anticipated speaking in the first place, let alone explaining why she doesn’t want Deredekeas running off with some Sarkic vermin.
(Goddess, Trunnion, you can’t say Sarkic anymore! Hold yourself together—only fifteen more minutes and this should be over, just breathe.)

The simple sound of gears clicking away in the perfect machine of living is a comfort. Like much of their existence as something excised out of the grander tableau of war and opposition, they simply are. Nadox knows the constant breathing of lungs and warmth from his flesh is just as much a comfort. And there’s never pressure to convert, conform, or compete—only comfort in existing as they are. Together.
