Pokémon of the Day #0386
Name: Deoxys
Pronunciation: Dee-Yocks-Iss
Etymology: Derived from deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA)
Type: Psychic
Design Origins:
Deoxys draws from some depictions of aliens, with arms resembling a nucleic acid double helix. As a result, it may be based on the concept of alien viruses and mutation. Its connection to meteorites, as well as its pokédex entries stating it fell to earth on a meteor may suggest that it draws from the super fringe scientific concept of panspermia, which is the idea that life is extraterrestrial in origin and arrived on earth via meteorites.
Attack Forme Deoxys becomes a lot more angular, with sharper ends to its arms and pointed knees, giving it a more aggressive look.
Defense Forme Deoxys on the other hand looks more blocky, somewhat resembling a wall.
Speed Forme Deoxys’ body is much thinner, with an elongated head resembling a cycling helmet, all of which help with aerodynamics to make it go faster.
Most Interesting Pokédex Entry:
“The DNA of a space virus underwent a sudden mutation upon exposure to a laser beam and resulted in Deoxys. The crystalline organ on this Pokémon’s chest appears to be its brain.” - Ruby, Omega Ruby
“This Deoxys has transformed into its aggressive guise. It can fool enemies by altering its appearance.” - FireRed (Attack Forme)
“When it changes form, an aurora appears. It absorbs attacks by altering its cellular structure.” - LeafGreen (Defense Forme)
“A Pokémon that mutated from an extraterrestrial virus exposed to a laser beam. Its body is configured for superior agility and speed.” - Emerald (Speed Forme)
