I mostly stuck to local activities this month.  I went and saw the broadway show Beauty and the Beast. The costumes and songs were well done, but the jokes were a bit jarring. I forgot that it was mostly aimed at children, so the jokes had to be explained very clearly so the kids could get it. But it was still fun.

This weekend we headed to the Denver Holiday Flea excited to find quality, handcrafted goods, talented vendors, and a convivial atmosphere.  Not only did the Flea meet those expectations, they blew them out of the water. A pleasant surprise was also the undercurrent of humor found in the works for sale and exemplified by their creators. Take for example our first pair of stops: Craft Boner and Mountain vs Plains. Both are local business well-known for hilarious, R-rated wordsmithing and top-shelf design.  We were cracking up immediately and happily fondling the goods: coffee cups toting brash slogans (too risqué for work? Maybe.) and minimally designed greeting cards that might earn you a laugh or a punch in the face (depending on the person you sent it to). We loved the no filter aesthetic.

Another key take-away was the feeling of community mindset and creative comradery. In a conversation with Knotty Tie co-founder Jeremy Priest, we learned that a real love of people over product motivated his business. He started with a desire to actively employee refugees & he quickly discovered that many refugees in Colorado are expert tailors. Win Win. This people-first business model is very similar to Shauna Lott’s, founder of Long I Pie.  We were already impressed with Chris and then he mentioned how wonderful Shauna & her company are –  how sweet is this group? They don’t just talk about their craft; they make sure to promote other creatives’ work too!

We won’t lie - one ulterior motive we had for all this Flea fun was to meet spectacular local creatives who we hope to see in future DAM programming, such as Untitled Final Fridays and our Plaza collaborations. Here’s just a few of the great maker’s we’ve got our eye on!

So, it’s Holiday season, and maybe, just maybe you have a girlfriend who loves adorning herself in gold and a brother who desperately needs to stop borrowing Dad’s ties. Perhaps you have a friend with dry hands, who loves goats.  Maybe your awkward co-worker needs to drink coffee from a “bitch, please” mug and really, truly, when you’re feeling particularly honest, maybe all you really need in this life is a monster to love.

So…maybe you’ve heard of the Denver Flea?  Well if not, let us do you the solid of sharing the news. The Denver Holiday Flea is the place to get something for everyone on your holiday list (and if you’re like me….lots of selfish gifts for yourself). Housed in the old Denver Post production facility at 4400 Fox street, the Flea brings together over 150 vendors with wonderful things you didn’t even know you needed (but trust us, you totally do).  All of the communities best makers, shakers and crafters are there selling a variety of awesome creations that keep Denver smelling good, looking cool, eating well and feeling cozy.
