In the span of two years, things have changed so drastically for Joe Hardy that he feels like he’s in some kind of fever dream. But it’s all very real. The supernatural world is real. Monsters and angels are real, and so are the people who hunt them. 

Not only that, but demons are real too. And his brother, Frank, is one of them, having sold his soul to save Joe from some untimely danger, and got spit back out after a year and a half of being on the racks. People may not remember Frank’s death, but Joe does. Now he has to act as Frank’s moral compass, since Frank doesn’t seem to have an issue anymore with just outright killing people who piss him off.

1) it was a trap, at first, and a good one at that. They wanted someone to fuck with, to torture, to ruin. They are demons after all. And Gerard played nice cop so well, with the sweet smiles and the kind words and hitting on you, it was easy to trust him with those soft eyes and the oversized hoodies. He was good at being exactly what you wanted, good at luring you right into their trap

2) Frank was hell, Frank reeked of sulfur and pain and suffering, his twisted smile told stories of torture and the way he looked at you let you know that all those stories where twisted just for you. Frank terrified you and when Gerard gave you over he terrified you to, this was it, this was how you died

3) But maybe it wasn’t that easy, maybe you were just as much a trap for them as they were for you. Maybe your caring eyes and refusal to give up, refusal to stop fighting, showed them something they needed to see. Maybe those moments you and Gerard had before Frank meant something to him too. Maybe when you spit blood at Frank and told him how you’ll kill him, how you’ll never stop fighting, sparked respect and even affection in him for you

4) Months of torture and pain and just these two demons and you became confusing and twisted and slowly slowly slowly you gained freedom. You talked to them, yelling to crying to just...talking. They unchained you sometimes, but kept a close eye, they never talked about hell even when you asked. They aren’t normal demons exactly, they are something broken and hurt and kicked out. Shunned. Something happens in those few months trapped together and you realized that Frank is just as trapped as you, a prisoner and Gerard is just trying to keep him sane. 

5) You flinch the first time Frank shows you affection, brushing hair out of your face, you flinch away violently and he is confused and then breathes hard. He apologizes and leaves you alone. There is something about him...

6) Gerard comes to you one night, he beats himself up for taking you. He hates himself. He just wants to help his boyfriend feel better, he just wants Frank to be happy but its so hard ever since he was cast out, abandoned by hell. Trapped in this place between hell and reality. A part of you wants to forgive him and that part of you kisses him

“Do you know what it’s like,” Frank asked, his voice deadly soft as he stared into Brian’s face, “having your tongue ripped right out of your mouth? It’s torture. Your gag reflex is being constantly triggered but there’s no relief. It’s burning as you feel it being ripped apart. You’re heaving and your gasping and the pain makes spots show up in your vision, and you’re desperate to make it stop, even if it means having your tongue ripped out completely.”

Joe felt his stomach clench, nausea slowly hitting him. From the description, it was clear that had been something Frank had been forced to go through in Hell. Something so vivid, so agonizing... He watched, a little horrified, as Frank’s grip on Brian’s face increased enough to leave bruises, his grey eyes almost flickering black.

“So tell me Conrad, is that something you wanna feel today? Blink once for yes, twice for no.”

With watering eyes, Brian quickly blinked twice, looking like he had a tic.

They weren’t even there for a case, which was probably why it felt like it caught them so off guard. Dean had decided to give Sam another vacation of sorts--as best as he could manage to--and they were rolling into a small, rural town with supposedly good fishing nearby.

But then when they were picking up some basic groceries for their motel room....Dean saw the flare of black eyes in a young man sitting nearby, grinning at a blonde boy at his side.

“Sam,” he muttered. “Demon.”

His brother looked over, his face hardening when he took in the scene. The blonde didn’t look distressed, but it was possible that he didn’t know the danger that he was in.

The year is 1918, and eleven year old Frank Hardy is with his parents, Laura and Fenton, when the doctor gives the troubling news: that his ten year old brother Joe has cancer, and thus has no chances of surviving past the end of the summer. Desperate and afraid, as many young children would be, Frank runs away from the hospital, only to come across a crossroads fifteen minutes away. There, he meets a rather beautiful teenage girl with bright red hair, who promises Frank anything in the world.

He wishes for Joe’s cancer to go away. He wishes for Joe to live a long and healthy, happy life. The girl promises to give him this, but it would come at a cost. “You have such a bright little soul,” she says, running her fingers through his dark hair. “I’d so love to have it. All it takes is a kiss, and I promise, Joe will be happy and healthy always.”

Frank doesn’t even think twice. He lets the girl kiss him, sealing the deal, and by the next morning Joe’s cancer is completely gone, his previously disease ridden body healthy once more.

It’s not until Frank is sixteen years old that the realization of what he had done finally sinks in, and by then he’s only got five years left. So, after trying and failing to find a loophole, he decides to live life to the fullest, solving mysteries with Joe, making friends, graduating high school, and then college almost at lightning speed. The summer after he turns twenty one, he spends his final day with his family, before taking a bike ride during the night away from the house, heart pounding as he hears the baying of hounds on his tail.

By next morning, his body is found in a ditch by the side of the road. The official autopsy declares it a rabid wild dog attack.

After three thousand years of Hell -- or three years on Earth -- Frank is finally spit back out of the Pit. He’s eternally twenty one, as fresh faced as he was the night he died. Except now he’s sporting some nifty powers and some pretty frightening black eyes to accompany the new attitude he’s got.
