this au infects my every waking moment so naturally i feel the need to yap about it. APOCALYPSE-VERSE TIME BABYYYY. this time imma be talking about demeter and the various relationships she has and what they're like.
buckle up this is gonna be a long one.
cws:macavity,abusive and toxic relationships,codependency,manipulation and ableism. the ableism part is minor but the warning stays regardless.
demeter and macavity-oh this one is so fucked up but so so so interesting to think about it. so macavity and demeter are in a relationship-for i'd say five years-and during these years demeter experiences verbal and physical abuse from macavity. but due to past experiences demeter doesn't exactly view these actions as harmful and instead views them as normal so she talks about macavity's abusive behavior in a very casual manner.
it doesn't help that most of the other cats in macavity's gang-the swarm-are aware of the abuse that demeter suffers at the hands of macavity but refuse to do anything about it(the parasites:a sub group of macavity's gang who deal with the more violent ordeals,for example)because they're either scared of macavity(grizabella),or they just don't give a shit(the leader of the parasites,mick and his weird murderous found family polycule).
(grizabella tried to stand up against macavity but the last time she did,mick and his partners-rey and em-murdered a tom who was planning to overthrow macavity. allegedly. the entire thing was basically saying 'cross me again and this will be you'. obviously it was a message to griz and she's fucking terrified of him now.)
so demeter stays with macavity for many reasons:he manipulates her into staying by lovebombing and swearing that he'll change even though he never does,he keeps her safe and she's allowed to be herself around him.
see demeter is trans and autistic in this universe(this is what happens when you take some inspo from an ajw novel. this happened before i started reading the book btw)and she hasn't exactly been treated well because of that. she experienced a lot of meltdowns as a child(or kitten/kit) and her mother's response was to physically restrain her(the cats are not immune from being dicks!!! also you can't be a character in a story of mine w/o being queer,mentally ill,autistic or parental issues.)
but with macavity she's allowed to stim and doesn't have to mask and she's allowed to be unapologetically neurodivergent.
demeter being trans is another factor because she didn't exactly have the ability to start medically transitioning(estrogen and testosterone are like pretty rare in this universe so you have to be super lucky if you want some). macavity got her estrogen and she's been on it for like 5 years now. she's finally able to feel comfortable in her body and her gender dysphoria has gone down a little bit. but she is a bit insecure about it as well because macavity has convinced her that he's the only who could love a woman like her. so yeahhhh.
i have gone on an entire yapping session about these two to my therapist. they're so interesting to me. demeter and macavity are so fucked up but their narrative potential is ENDLESS.
now onto another relationship!!
bomba and demeter-TOXIC YURI TIME BABYYYY. so demeter and bomba's relationship is kind of like demeter and macavity but different in that instead of it being violence,lies and false promises,it's built on an understanding of pain and hardship. bomba used to be in a relationship with macavity and it fucked her up BADLYYYY. as mentioned before in the tuggerina/tuggerlurina she's sworn off romance in general because of that experience(she's just not ready after that shit)so when demeter joins the jellicles,she immediately realizes that demeter is another one of macavity's victims. so a large chunk of initial their interactions is bomba taking demeter under her wing and being super protective of her(in a way that can sometimes be possessive and obsessive but we'll put a pin in that for now)and demeter latching on to her and viewing bomba as a source of comfort and protection(like a specific someone i mentioned...)
but while it is built on that shared pain and understanding,you gotta remember that these are two deeply damaged women who don't know what the fuck they're doing so when they get together it becomes pretty unhealthy(they suck at communicating,bomba's protectiveness becomes borderline possessive etc etc). bomba and demeter become super obsessed with each other and 100% would kill for each other. naturally this will bring about their inevitable doom but yk that's just how this shit works. by the end of it all they're so so obsessed with each other that they refuse to even be apart and are always by each other's side. you cannot separate them and if they do they will probably kill you.
ending this off with a quote from them(bomba is speaking first btw):

they make me so unwell...i love them so much(have also gone on a yapping session about these two. i've gone on a yapping session about this au in GENERAL. i am unwell.)
onto another one!!!
demeter and tugger-oh these two have such a fun dynamic. so for a large chunk of the series tugger is into demeter because she's one of the few cats in the tribe(one of the ones around his age i mean)who doesn't go out of her way to fawn over him(mistoffelees doesn't really count because they're dating and misto THIRSTSSSS over tugger in private. they're both equally down bad for each other. disgusting.) he's super intrigued by this(he only likes what he finds for himself!)and does attempt to start something with her but she rejects him because she think he's super annoying and distracting and he backs off. now here's where their dynamic becomes fucking hilarious(imo).
i mentioned that demeter is autistic right? so she is mute but only in situations where she's overwhelmed or overstimulated and stops talking as a way to function. plus communicating with neurotypicals is just exhausting yk. the multi chaptered fic i have planned where tugger and demeter start interacting(maybe the fifth or sixth idk have to figure where the tugoffelees and misto-centric fic will take place time-line wise)is kind of an example of this but that's more out of intense emotional trauma(macavity)then being overstimulated and exhausted. throughout this fic demeter mostly communicates through sign language(the jellicle cats equivalent that is)or through writing. however even when she does start speaking again she refuses to speak to tugger because she thinks he's just THAT annoying. so at this point in the story she's 100 percent capable of speaking to him but refuses to out of spite. she just can't stand him and doesn't understand why mistoffelees is into him(she gets the appeal of tugger physically cause well she has eyes but personality wise? they're super different and she's kind of confused why they're together). she does end up liking him later on as she starts to see tugger less as an walking nuisance and more of a damaged guy who's just trying to live long enough to-hopefully-make it to thirty. she sees him at his lowest and the two end becoming friends but not quite.
i think about them. a lot.
-so originally this final part would've been about jemima and demeter and their relationship but i realized that i don't have much for them beyond 'jemima looks at demeter and decides that that is her mother now because jemima collects adoptive family members like pokemon cards'. so instead i'll just talk about some of my inspirations for this au.
in july i was re-reading "hell followed with us". the book is about benji,a 16 year old trans gay boy on the run from a religious cult that infected him with a bio weapon known as 'seraph'. they plan to use seraph as a way to cleanse the earth aka wipe out the rest of humanity. benji comes across the alc(acheson lgbtq+ center)and they take him in. the book takes place in a post-apocalyptic setting and the book is about a bunch of queer kids just trying to live long enough to grow up.
around this time,i watched sideways' video on cats 2019 and after watching many,many videos about how much the movie sucked,i gave in and watched the musical and became obsessed with it. one day the idea for an cats apocalypse au just hit me and i was like waitttt this sounds interesting. so yeah.
ooh and another inspo(at least for the monsters who i have yet to really get to designing and describing)is the human walrus movie:) even before i started watching the movie,the design and look of wallarus(wallace as a walrus)was so fascinating to me. it's horrifying to look at but soooo good. the moment i realized that i could it as a basis for the monsters in the apocalypse-verse,i was like oh i have to do this.
