Isaac had never bolted out of a class room as fast as he had bolted out of this one. The text was simple: “come to the hospital, asap. its the baby”. A sliver of happiness sprouted before he realized that it was no where near the baby’s due date. Which meant that something was wrong.Â
He knew some babies were born pre mature, it wasn’t all that uncommon. But this, this was much too early. Something was oh so terribly wrong. He sped through the streets, even ran a few too many red lights. He didn’t care if he got twenty tickets in the mail; this was more important than anything.
There were quite a few people he knew milling around, waiting on news about Regina or the baby. He didn’t feel it was right for him to join her in the delivery room. So he waited, letting horrible thoughts run through his mind. Despite his worry for his baby, he was worried about her too. What if something happened to both of them?
All of his siblings were adopted; he’d never gone through any type of labor, and hadn’t really heard anyone’s account of one. Did deliveries really take this long? It felt like a million years since he had first read that text message.
After what feels like hours later, Isaac sees Regina on a wheelchair, being pushed around. Without thinking, he followed after her, not stopping even when she’s about to go into a room. Without a word, he followed her, knowing that she’s going to see their baby. He doesn’t hear if the women who is pushing Regina complains about him being there. Even if she had, there was no way she could stop him.
He stops a few feet behind her, keeping his hands buried in his pockets. It doesn’t take but just one look to realize that this child is not his. And while this breaks his heart, he knows that this is still his child. He’s spent months dreaming about her and getting ready for her; there was no way he could ever let someone else take responsibility for her.
Isaac fought back tears as he saw Regina speak to her. Its a girl. She had ten toes and ten fingers, but she also had so many tubes connected to her. His daughter, his beautiful daughter, wasn’t well. He’d never been a prayer type of guy, but he prayed to ever deity he could think of to protect her and to make sure she made it home safe and sound.
