Typography Tuesday: S. S. Frackelton
Our sibling department Special Collections ( @uwmspeccoll ) recently posted about Milwaukee artist Susan Stuart Frackelton and featured images of the chromolithographic plates in her book Tried by Fire: A Work on China-Painting.
Here in the Archives, we have a small collection of Frackelton’s papers mainly concerning her exhibitions, lectures, and the publishing of the book mentioned above. Today we include images from two promotional booklets showing examples of the subjects that S. S. Frackelton would lecture on as well as some of the honors she earned with her art. The typography and design of the second booklet shown above highlights the arts and crafts style Susan Stuart Frackelton was a spokesperson for.

Here we have some notarial copies in Latin of decrees and grants relating to Giovanni Faella of Verona and his family, mostly written by imperial notary Francesco di Andrea Ruffo in 1504, in Verona. Have you seen those beautifully decorated initials?

This volume contains the second Greek edition of the Platonic corpus, edited by Johannes Oporinus and Simon Grynaeus ; the text is based upon the Aldine edition of 1513. The book was printed at Basel by Joannes Valderum in March 1534. In addition to the text of Platonic works, the edition contains commentaries by Proclus on the Timaeus and the Republic. Notes in Latin, Greek, and French have been written throughout the volume. [Source]
