CASE FILE #48291āINTERROGATION TRANSCRIPT
Date: March 14, 2024Ā Location: Fairview Police Department, Interview Room BĀ Interviewing Officer: Detective Samuel OrtizĀ Suspect: [REDACTED] (Alias: "Goldie")
Detective Ortiz: Start from the beginning.
Goldie: The beginning? Oh, Sammy, thatās a long way back. The realĀ beginning? Or the part where I walked through that door?
Detective Ortiz: Letās talk about the house.
Goldie: TheirĀ house. MyĀ house. Itās all the same. It called to me. Do you know what that feels
like, Detective? To have something whisper your name when no one else is listening?
Detective Ortiz: You forced the lock.
Goldie: Did I?Ā [laughs] Maybe. Itās hard to tell sometimes. I get theseāthese jumpsĀ in my head. One second, Iām standing outside, and the next, Iām already inside, like the universe just... skippedĀ ahead.
Detective Ortiz: You were high.
Goldie: [grinning] Not at first. But then⦠well. Who wouldnāt be in a place like that?
Detective Ortiz: Youāre saying you used drugs inside the home?
Goldie: āDrugs.ā Ugh, such a cold word. You ever hear a house breathe, Detective? Because I have. The walls stretched like animal hide, and the floor pulsed under me. Thatās when I knew I was right where I was supposed to be.
Detective Ortiz: So you were under the influence while -
Goldie: [cuts him off , grins] Ohhh, I was more than that. Itās not just the powder, Detective. Itās the rhythm, the pulse. The way the world melts and reshapes if you justā[snaps fingers]ālet it.
Detective Ortiz: Youād been using. What? Meth? LSD?
Goldie: A little cocktail. You ever taste the wrong thing and suddenly see through everything? Like the world was a mask, and for one bright, perfect second, you could peel it back? Thatās what the house did. It peeled meĀ back.
Detective Ortiz: Thatās why you ate the food?
Goldie: Ohhh, that food. [licks lips] I was starving. You ever get that deep, aching hunger? The kind where your ribs feel like theyāre folding in? They left the bowls there, so I tasted. First one was too hotāit burned all the way down, like swallowing a candle. Second was too cold, all wrong, like something dead. But the third⦠oh, thatĀ one was just right. Made my skin tingle. Made everything hum.
Detective Ortiz: What did you take?
Goldie: [giggles] A little bit of this. A little bit of that. Maybe more than a little. But donāt worry, I was still aware. Sharp. Thatās when I saw the chairs. Another test.
Detective Ortiz: So you knew someone lived there.
Goldie: Of course I did. I could smellĀ them. The fur. The musk. The weight of something heavy and breathing in the walls.
Detective Ortiz: And you sat in their chairs.
Goldie: Had to. The test wasnāt over. The first chairātoo big. It swallowed me whole, tried to wrap its arms around me. The secondātoo stiff, too rigid. But the third? [laughs] Oh, the third one was perfect. It fit me like a second skin. And then it broke.
Detective Ortiz: Because you destroyed it.
[Detective Ortiz slides a CRIME SCENE PHOTO across the table. The remains of the small chairāshattered, splintered into jagged pieces. Blood speckled on the wood.]
Ā That is your blood , right Goldie ?
Goldie: You ask me that as if it matters detective .
Detective Ortiz: Why did you break the chair ?
Ā Goldie: Because it was meantĀ to be destroyed. That was the real test, donāt you see? To see if I could breakĀ what was given to me.
Detective Ortiz: And then you went upstairs.
Goldie: The final trial. The beds.I needed to rest. My head was all loose, you know? Things shifting, voices whispering. It was hard to stay in one piece.
Detective Ortiz: Voices?
Goldie: Mmm. I hear them sometimes. I think you do too, donāt you, Detective? That little itch in your brain that tells you whatās coming next?
Detective Ortiz: What wasĀ coming next?
Goldie: [smiles] The family.
Detective Ortiz: The victims.
Goldie: The Bears. I heard them before I saw them. Big, stomping feet. Low, rumbling growls. They knew I was there. They could smellĀ me.
Detective Ortiz: And you waited.
Goldie: Of course I waited. You donāt just run when a moment like that is about to unfold. You let it happen.
Goldie: Ohhh, you shouldāve heard them, Detective. Low, rolling growls, the kind that make the air thick. I could hear their jawsĀ moving, their clawsĀ dragging across the floor. They werenāt human, not really. Not anymore.
Detective Ortiz: [pause] And what did you do?
Goldie: I showed them what IĀ was.
Detective Ortiz: You attacked them.
Goldie: I defended myself.
Detective Ortiz: Bullshit.
Goldie: [leans in] Have you ever seen what a blade can do to fur? Have you ever smelledĀ what happens when metal meets flesh? The big oneāhe came first. Papa Bear. He charged. I let him. I let him feel hopeĀ before I took it away.
Detective Ortiz: You stabbed him 17 times.
Goldie: He kept moving.
Detective Ortiz: And the mother?
Goldie: She screamed. She begged. Ohhh, you shouldāve seen her eyes when she realized. When she knewĀ that it didnāt matter. That I was inĀ her house, in herĀ space, and she had noĀ control. I chased her down like an animal.
Detective Ortiz: You skinnedĀ her.
Goldie: She had suchĀ soft skin.
Detective Ortiz: And the child?
Goldie: [grinning wider] Baby Bear.He watched. He didnāt scream. Didnāt move. Just watched. I think he understood.
Detective Ortiz: You killed him too.
Goldie: Did I?
Detective Ortiz: We didnāt find him.
Goldie: [laughs] Oh, Sammy. You wonāt.
Detective Ortiz: Why not?
Goldie: Because heās still out there. Heās growing. Heās learning. Heās remembering what I did.
Detective Ortiz: [long pause]
Goldie: And one day, heāll come , Iām sure of it , itās a cycle donāt you see detective ? What happened once will happen once again and again and again and again.
Detective Ortiz: A cycle ? So you would say thereās history between you and the Bears?
Goldie: [laughs] Oh sweet Sammy , if I do all the work then what are you here for ? I thought you were the detective , go do a bit of detective-ing
