Decorticate vs. Decerebrate Posturing 

Decorticate and decerebrate posturing are abnormal postures that indicate severe brain damage. They differ in their characteristics and underlying causes: 

Decorticate Posturing 

Characteristics: 

Arms flexed at the elbows and wrists 

Hands turned inward and clenched 

Legs extended 

Feet plantar-flexed (toes pointed down) 

Cause: Damage to the cerebral cortex (outer layer of the brain) 

Decerebrate Posturing 

Characteristics: 

Arms extended at the elbows and wrists 

Hands turned outward 

Legs extended 

Feet plantar-flexed 

Head and neck arched backward 

Brainless cat walks and runs on treadmill.
