MERTHUR - December Rush

Three years ago, Arthur Pendragon was a forensic scientist specializing in facial reconstruction for the FBI until a vicious serial killer kidnapped and nearly killed him. He never fully recovers and has to give up his job. Meanwhile, his wife, Gwen, files for divorce. Then, his sister Emilia dies in a car accident along with her husband, and he becomes the legal guardian of their young son Isaac. To escape the nightmare his life has become, he and Isaac move to a small town near Whistler, where Arthur earns a living doing odd jobs.

Just before Christmas, Morgause, a good friend of Arthur's, asks him to house-sit. She expects a visitor but forgets to mention that Merlin Emrys is handsome, charming, and extraordinary because he is blind. Arthur has no idea what he gets into as he and Merlin lock onto one another from their first meeting like heat-seeking missiles. However, Arthur senses Merlin is hiding something. And Merlin isn't sure how long he can keep up the charade, as falling in love was never part of the plan.

Excerpt: ... Arthur was stunned when he walked into the anteroom and found himself face to face with two fully clothed boys, ready to go to the playground.

"Wow, Isaac, you did a great job," Arthur praised him. The little one grinned and tugged on Merlin's pants.

Merlin put his finger to his mouth and said, "Shh, don't tell."

Isaac mimicked him, making Arthur laugh, who took his winter jacket off the hook, and they left.

It was a beautiful winter day; the sun was shining, albeit cold, and the fallen snow sparkled like someone had sprinkled diamonds on it. Curious glances followed them as they walked down the street. Arthur was the eye-catcher in his red winter jacket. Together with Merlin, who wore a dark turtleneck and a beige winter jacket with faded blue jeans stretching over his muscular thighs down his long legs and black boots that completed the look, they caught even more attention. Arthur wondered what color Merlin's eyes were since he hadn't taken off his sunglasses the whole time. If it hadn't been for his white cane, no one would have guessed he was blind.

"Arthur, would you describe to me what you see?" asked Merlin.

Excerpt: Arthur and Merlin were so absorbed in their conversation that they didn't notice the dangerous patch of ice ahead of them. Arthur slipped and lost his balance, grabbing onto Merlin in a panic. Merlin was caught off guard and stumbled along with Arthur. Time seemed to slow down as they both fell to the ground. Arthur let out a scream that echoed through the air as his back hit the pavement with a thud, leaving him momentarily dazed. Looking up, he saw the sky above him dotted with stars. Merlin, who had managed to break his fall somewhat, sat beside him on the ground, bewildered and cursing under his breath.

Excerpt: It was, how could it be otherwise, Isaac who more than rudely woke them from their sleep. With a loud yell, he jumped up and threw himself on top of Arthur, using his belly as a trampoline.

"Get up, get up," his bell-like voice echoed through the house.

Merlin was so startled that he bolted upright, "What, where, how? Where am I?"

Arthur burst out laughing. Merlin looked simply adorable. His hair stood up in all directions, and he was completely disoriented.

Excerpt: Arthur's marriage did not survive the ordeal. After he was rescued, Gwen filed for divorce. She didn't even wait for him to leave the hospital. It took Arthur about a year to recover from his abduction. Returning to his job was no longer an option for him. He wanted to distance himself from anything and everything to do with it. Then, his twin sister Emilia and her husband were killed in a terrible car accident. Little Isaac was at home with the babysitter. With the help of a clever lawyer and some connections, Arthur managed to get custody of his nephew.

His mind was so troubled that his voice almost failed when he called Isaac and Merlin to join him in the kitchen. While Isaac didn't notice it, Merlin, whose heightened sense of hearing picked up even the slightest nuances, realized that something was wrong with Arthur.

Isaac sat at the table and took a sandwich. Arthur had his back on him and did the dishes. He didn't want his nephew to see him so distraught and startled when Merlin suddenly stood behind him and grabbed him by the shoulder. This gesture of affection was the final straw. Arthur held on to the edge of the sink while tears ran down his face.

In a concerned but low voice so that Isaac couldn't hear it, Merlin asked, "Arthur, what's wrong?"
