Perhaps most obviously for Giyuu is the haori he wears at all times, each half once belonging to two of the most important people in his life: his older sister, Tsutako and best friend, Sabito. In many ways, the haori is a physical representation of their lost lives and his failure to do anything to protect them, but it’s also the greatest sole source of comfort he allows for himself. Everything else is rejected as a form of self-punishment, but the haori wrapped around his shoulders is his only indulgence, a reminder of when times were happier. A reminder of when they suddenly weren’t.
The scent of salmon daikon, a dish that his elder sister used to frequently make him while growing up, is another reminder of Tsutako for Giyuu, although one with more positive connotations. It’s an untainted scent, one that reminds him of the hours he and his sister would spend hovering in front of the stove as she taught him how to cook his favourite meal, and all the disasters which came with it.
For reasons he can’t entirely fathom, the scent of peaches and cinnamon reminds him strongly ( wistfully ) of Sabito. While it was once comforting, it’s become a scent that haunts him, that has him turning in the middle of the street in search of his long-dead friend, convinced he noticed a flash of peach coloured hair. It’s a scent that leaves him feeling hollow and out of place, fingers grasping at the patterned half of his haori until the unbearable moment of dissociation ends.

( ALTERNATE VERSE )
The warding fox mask that Sabito is always seen wearing is one of his biggest reminders of the man who saved him from despair and gave him a purpose ( a newfound family ), helping him channel his anger and injustice into something more constructive. No matter how much time passes, Sabito will never stop feeling thankful for Urokodaki’s kindness and will continue to wear his mask for as long as he possibly can.
As far as scents go, anything floral ( wildflowers or perfume ) is an instant reminder of Makomo, a fellow former student of Urokodaki and one of his dearest friends with a penchant for crafting flower crowns whenever she gets the chance. Despite it all, floral scents ( so long as they’re not too overpowering ) have become a comfort to him and bring a near-instantaneous sense of calm.
The scent of tea ( specifically matcha, or green tea ) and fresh linen are two things Sabito has come to associate with Giyuu, his closest friend and most trustworthy partner. They have proven to be yet another set of scents that bring him comfort during trying times, although he’s often left craving tea as a result.

The scent of fresh linen and sweet, floral perfume offers Kyojuro an instant reminder of his mother, Ruka. His memories of her are amongst his most precious, as her words of encouragement helped to mould his worldview and set him on his path towards becoming a Hashira. Similarly, whenever he encounters those “weaker” than himself, he’s reminded of his mother’s words and the importance of his status as Hashira.
There are too many things to list in regards to what reminds Kyojuro of his younger brother, Senjuro. Even the smallest of things can spark a sudden reminder, especially if it’s something he thinks Senjuro would like/enjoy. He’s immensely proud of his younger brother and wants nothing more than to support him in his every endeavour, as well as offer comfort as any older brother would.
Over the years since his mother’s death, alcohol ( the smell of, the sight of ) has come to serve as a reminder of his father, Shinjuro. While he still loves and respects his father a great deal, understanding the root of his anger/hopelessness, he finds it difficult to forgive his father’s habit of drowning himself in his loss and finding comfort at the bottom of the bottle, leaving his younger brother to care for the estate while he’s away on missions/attending to his duties as a Hashira. His attempts to garner praise and make his father proud have often fallen short, but it does little to dampen his passion.

Fire is perhaps the biggest thing that Tanjiro associates with his father, Tanjuro, and the rest of his family. From his father’s impactful Dance of the Fire God to the fact that his family have always dealt with fire due to selling charcoal to neighbouring villages, fire itself has come to represent the most comforting moments in Tanjiro’s life, to the point that he was able to utilise the Breath Style his father once used and create powerful swordsmen techniques from it.
Acts of kindness, bonds between siblings, hot pots, sharing a room with his friends are all reminders of the family he lost, for better or worse. No matter the time or place, it is rare for Tanjiro not to be thinking of his deceased family members, relating his experiences or the things he’s seen to them in some way. For the most part, these thoughts are positive and filled with love, but there are rare occasions where these reminders bring forth the grief he’s kept buried for several years, overwhelming him.
Flowers, the scent of fresh linen, beautiful kimonos and rich fabrics all remind him fondly of his younger sister, Nezuko, and his goal to turn her back into a human. He fully intends to buy her as many kimonos as she desires as soon as things have settled and the two of them are safe once more, wanting nothing more than to give her the normal, comfortable life that she deserves.
