the thing about why haplo "taught to hate, never to love" HITS so hard is because he's thinking that during and in the middle of reflecting on the insane amount of love that has colored his life in the labyrinth along with the trauma. His parents, the people who took him in after them, every squatter village along the way, marit- all people he cared for and never let himself care for or believe they could care for him the same way but being able to realize how he cares for them and how he cares for everyone here, being put in the position of seeing every child of the labyrinth as his not just in their grief, wrath and injustice but in the love.

I wrote about Marit and Haplo talking about the future post-canon, I am Once Again obsessed with Marit POV
Shout-out to dgc for making the opposing forces not "good vs evil" or even "love vs hate" but "pity mercy and compassion vs anger and fear." Prescient.

Hexagonal shapes
Death Gate Cycle has been my obsession for many years now. One of my hobbies is looking for things around me that remind me of those books.
I often notice things that have hexagonal motives, because they remind me of Sartan runes <3.
From my collection:
That’s the name of one of the apartment buildings in Tokyo :).
"I lied," Haplo snarled, grabbing hold of the first mensch that came within his grasp. "I'm not a mysteriarch!" Blue and red sigla from the Patryn's arm flared, enveloped the human's body in dancing runes. The sigla flashed around the terrified man like a whirlwind and, with the speed of lightning, arced from him to the elf he was battling. The jolt sizzled from that elf to the human fighting behind him. Faster than any of them could let go an indrawn breath, the runes jolted through the bodies of every elf and human inside the cable room, sped from there throughout the ship. There was a sudden, frozen silence. "I'm a god," Haplo announced grimly. -The Hand of Chaos, pg 397 There are a lot of really memorable moments in the Death Gate Cycle, but this moment when Haplo absolutely loses his shit after four books of trying to hide or play down his actual power is definitely one of my favorites. I really adore him as a character, but there's next to no canon representations of him; this is my best guess based on a combination of written description, the one actual canon drawing, and various fanarts. It's been nice to finally draw something for Death Gate, now that I finally feel like I'm starting to get to a place where I can actually draw scenes with the attention to detail that they deserve. It's a super underappreciated series, and one that's definitely influenced my approach to writing and worldbuilding a lot.
My husband is finally letting me read some of the earlier books in the Death Gate series (that he based our long running DnD game off of), and I am highly entertained so I doodled this in his planner as a lil' treat.
