Thinking about Cas showing up to reap Dean in 15x20. Sam canât see him as he weeps over Deanâs body. Dean however, blinks slowly, because thereâs no way, no way, heâs seeing what he thinks heâs seeing.
For a moment, Dean thinks heâs in Heaven. Could he technically have a copy of Cas in his Heaven, even if the real deal is lost forever? Jack, this isnât what I want, I want him, the real him.
Then Cas, all in black, sighs, shaking his head. âDammit, Dean,â he growls. âI thought I could leave you by yourself for a week.â
âCas?â Dean finally whispers, his voice weak.
Cas sighs again, patiently this time, crosses the barn, and takes Dean by the hand. âIâm not technically supposed to do this...but I think Jack will overlook it just this once.â
He presses his hand to Deanâs cheek. His touch is searing hot, radiating warmth into his skin. Dean nevertheless leans into the touch, eyes falling closed. With a soft, sad moan, he says again, âCas-â
Suddenly heâs gasping for breath, back in his own body. Sam screams in surprise, nearly dropping him.
âIâm okay, Iâm okay!â Dean exclaims, jumping back on unsteady legs. He has to reach out for Samâs shoulder to steady himself. He looks around the barn frantically for the angel, but itâs just him, Sam, and the dead vamps.
âWha-...Dean! How did you...?â
âCas,â Dean said breathlessly. âI saw Cas.â
âCas? What are you talking about?â
âHeâs back, Sammy. Jack mustâve brought him back. And he brought me back.â Dean presses a hand to his chest and realizes the wound where the rebar had stabbed him is completely healed. He then looks upward. âCas! Where the hell are you?!â he yells.
âDean...â
âDammit, Cas, show yourself!â Tears well up in Deanâs eyes, his voice breaks. âPlease...please, Cas. Donât leave me again.â
âDean,â Sam says again, more urgent this time. Dean looks and sees his angel standing there, clad in black and gripping a large scythe.

Death!Cas is all I can think about for some reason. It's been like three days now and it's nagging at me. He would look so cool. And he would personally take souls to heaven or hell.
He would not be like Billie. No, he would try to be but he has a soft spot for children and will usually bring them back to life and would rewrite so many deaths so nothing too drastically happens in the domino effect he created to save the child. And the reapers will always get annoyed but were quick to solve the problem.
He would also wear all black but change his outfit like all the time because he's cool and looks great. He tried to wear all white but someone called him an angel and he hated it so he went with all black. Sometimes a splash of green mixed in.(you know why)
Cas will go around to people and talk to them and leave conversations with; "Go call your mother. She misses you dearly." And the person does. And the mother ends up dying peacefully cause her kid called her one last time and resolved the issue. So he brings less ghost to the world. Idk I think death!Cas would be fair but kind. Still would have a hard time not making the heart choice.
Imagine Castiel coming back as the new Death (I still love that AU) and Dean gets so fucking angry, how dare some fucking reaper show up here with his face, and he yells, tears in his eyes, and slams his angel blade into its chest, even though he knows angel blades wonât do diddly-dick to Death. Heâs just so angry.
Cas tips his head at him, amused, and slowly pulls the blade from his chest, just like he did all those years ago. And Dean realizes...it really is-
âWe really must stop meeting like this,â Cas says with a smirk, before Dean pulls him into a desperate first kiss by his black tie.
(He canât resist, really. Cas in all black? Too hot to handle.)
Continuing my tradition of posting ~spooky~ fics for Halloween, hereâs a little thing with Death!Cas. I know weâre all freaking out with spn ending and a possible looming end for our fave so I hope this is a nice little au reprieve. The title is from 'Work Song' by Hozier, bc I needed to use one of his lyrics for a title eventually.
Enjoy.

The first time Castiel met him, he was crying.
He beat out with his tiny fists, and his father dragged him away, but not before he managed to swipe at Castiel. His hand passed through him like mist, and Castiel felt a shock, like he had been plunged in icy water.Â
Castiel extended a hand, and he and Mary Winchester walked into the afterlife together.
âYour son is a feisty one,â he told her.
âGood,â Mary replied. âHe'll have to be without his mama.â
â
âI know what you are.â
A manâboy, reallyâhis hands clenched. He stared at Castiel, anger staining his soul.Â
Castiel knew those eyes.
âYouâre a reaper,â the man accused.
Castiel did not deny it.
He simply stood, withdrawing his hands from the body in the alley.Â
âThatâs one word for what I am.â
The words dragged like rust in Castielâs throat. It had been some time since he last spoke.
âI've been searching for you. For years.âÂ
Castiel looked away, and said nothing.Â
The boy eyed him for several silent moments.
âWhy can I see you?âÂ
 Castiel told him honestly.Â
âI don't know.â
Some of the tension bled from the boyâs shoulders.
âYou got a name?â He asked gruffly.
 Castiel nodded.
âMy name is Castiel.â
The boy took an abortive step forward, his fingers outstretched. Castiel did not move.Â
He reached the outline of where Castielâs shoulder should be, but touched nothing but air.
His hand dropped.Â
âIâm Dean,â he said finally. âDean Winchester.â
âI know,â Castiel answered softly. âHello, Dean.â
â
âWhy can't I touch you?â He asked, the next time they met.
 âWould you like to?â
Dean thought for a moment, his brow furrowed.
âYes.â
Castiel stepped past Deanâs grandfather, lying sick in his bed. Castiel had never done it before, but he saw no reason why it wouldnât be possible. He extended his arm and thought very hard.
He felt himself solidify, and Dean reached out tentatively, as if Castiel were poisonous. He touched the back of his hand.
His fingers were hot, searing flame, burning brighter than anything Castiel had ever known.
Until, that is, Dean punched him in the face.
âThat was for my ma,â he said.
â
âI do not cause death,â Castiel said, many months later. âI am merely the link between worlds.â
Dean lifted his head, shock crossing his pale face.Â
âYou again.â
His voice was hoarse, weakened through many nights of grief. Tragedy had once again come to their small community, and Castiel could feel Deanâs soul still aching from it.
Castiel stepped forward, looking at the cold form lying before Dean, life now burnt out.
âYou were not related to this man,â he said, almost a question.
âNo,â Dean answered shortly.Â
âAh.âÂ
Castiel looked away. Even after all this time, the nuances of humanity still escaped him.
The silence between them stretched. Castiel furrowed his brow, searching for the appropriate words to use.Â
âIâm sorry.â
Dean said nothing, but his eyes widened, betraying his surprise.
âDean.âÂ
Another entered the room, long hair skimming over reddened eyes.
âThey want us outside,â the newcomer said, thin, tall, even younger than Dean. âYou know. To say a few words.â
His request was thick, choked. Castiel looked back from his face to Deanâs. Their pain was great, and shared.Â
âYeah, be there soon, Sammy,â Dean answered in a low voice, never taking his eyes off Castiel.
The boy waited for a moment, eyes sliding towards the spot where Castiel stood, where to him was only empty space.
âYouâre not still seeing ghosts, are you?â He asked, smiling wanly.Â
His soul flickered, strangely dim.Â
âNah,â Dean answered quietly.
They did not speak after that, even after the boy left the room. Some time later, Dean left too, with a quick nod toward Castiel, so brief he might have missed it.
Castiel watched him go.
Robert Singer sighed, a wistful smile on his face.
âWell,â he said, turning to Castiel. âWeâd better get goinâ, huh?â
 Castiel nodded.
âYes,â he said softly. âLetâs.â
â
Revolution came. Blood ran through the streets and voices cried out in the dawn, the sound of shouts and guns being fired.Â
Dean lay slumped against a building, bleeding in the dirtâa wound in his thigh that desperately needed a doctor. Castiel waited by the dying body of Deanâs compatriot, watching soldiers run past.
Dean saw him and his face went pale.
âWell, Castiel,â he murmured. âYou cominâ to finish me off?â
He knew. He knew if Castiel was there, it was already too late.
He passed out soon after from the blood loss. Dean was not to die yet, but soon. Thirty minutes maybe, a stray bullet to the head. He would feel nothing.Â
Castiel thought for a moment. Then he did something he was not allowed to do.Â
He picked up the dead comradeâs helmet and slipped it over Deanâs head, brushing the hair back from his glassy green eyes. Then Castiel gently laid him back against the building.
âNot yet, Dean Winchester,â he whispered.
â
Castiel was not sure why he did it. But nothing happened. No fire, no brimstone, no splitting of the fabric of time. Whatever cosmic consequences he had incurred lay quiet.
In the hospital, many died. Castiel checked on him frequently. By the seventh death, he was awake.
"Castiel," he whispered. âCas.â
The nurse hushed him and quickly turned up his medicine. Dean slipped back underâbut not before he grabbed Castielâs hand.
In sleep, he burns cooler, the swirling ocean during a storm.
â
Dean sat there, sunken eyes, in a wheelchair.Â
War brings out the demons inside.
"Y'know, I'm startin' to think you're following me."
 Castiel frowned.Â
"You do not know this man. I believe you are the one following me."
"Yeah, well." Dean turned his head away, scratching at a cheek covered in rough stubble. "I had to thank you, didn't I?"
 Castiel hesitated.
"I did nothing."
"Sure."
Dean picked at the edge of his bandage. A couple weeks and he'd be able to walk again.Â
"All I'm saying is, it's pretty nice I got the angel of death as my friend."
Castiel let out a small derisive sound.
"I am not an angel."
"Then what are you?"
Castiel thought for a moment.
"I'm not sure."
Then, something in his words registered. Castiel looked at him curiously.Â
 "Friend?"
"Yeah," Dean said. "Friend."
â
Dean was not there when Castiel took his father. They hadn't spoken in years.
âSo thatâs it,â John said flatly.
Castiel nodded.
âYes.â
John was silent for a long moment.Â
âGuess thereâs no talking my way outta this one,â he muttered. âNo more deals to make.â
Castiel slowly shook his head.
John looked back at his own body, tears welling in his eyes.
âMiss my boys,â he mumbled. âI shoulda...shoulda done more. Shoulda done right by them.â
He sighed, staring blankly at his hands.
âGuess itâs too late now.â
 Castiel spoke softly.
âYour son is a fine man.â
âYeah?â John turned, raising an eyebrow. âHow do you know?â
Castiel avoided his eyes, holding out a hand.
"Come," he said. "Mary is waiting."
â
"How come I see you so much?â
"Death is everywhere.â
"Then how come your name isn't...y'know. Death?âÂ
"There are many old names for things. Everything changes with time."
Silence sat between them, comfortable yet steady.
"Is there a god?"Â
"Why would you ask me that?"Â
"Dunno. Figured if there was, they'd be your boss."
"If there is, I've never met them.â
âHuh. Told Sammy as much. He still thinks you donât exist, by the way.â
âPeople find it hard to believe things they cannot see.â
âMmm.â
âItâs something I have wondered, many times, Yet it remains mysterious, even to me."Â
Castiel looked down at his hands, the means of his lonely burden.
 "I am merely the ferryman,â he murmured.Â
Dean nudged his shoulder.
"So the Greeks were right then?"
"What?"
 Dean rolled his eyes.
 "Never mind."
â
When his next-door neighbor died on his kitchen floor, Castiel visited Dean.Â
He was crying.Â
âDean.â
He looked up slowly, eyes unfocused.
âMy dadâs dead,â he mumbled. Castiel nodded.
âI know.â
 âWhy didnât you tell me?â
Castiel shrugged slowly.
âI hadn't talked to him,â Dean said, a confession. âNot in years.â
âHe mentioned you.â
Dean dropped his head back in his hands, shoulders shaking. Rather than comfort, Castielâs words seemed to have the opposite effect.
Castiel stood still for several long moments.
Then he knelt, reached out, and touched his cheek.
Tears clung to Deanâs lashes. He looked up at Castiel, shattered, laid bare, his rough exterior finally split open.
 Dean leaned forward, lips parting.
This soft, broken man was the edge of a knife, a precipice for which there could be no coming back.
Castiel brushed a thumb over the freckles dusting his skinâwheat and honey stars in a milky sky.Â
And he kissed him.
â
Dean still burns cool in his sleep. But they've evened out, and now, he feels like warm summer rain in Castielâs arms. He has stopped shivering when Castiel holds him.
âWhat do I look like?â Castiel whispers one night.
They do not have much time left. Castiel has been reckless, pushing the limits further and further each time he stays. He cannot begin to imagine what danger might come from his disobedience.
 âYou don't know?â
Dean smiles, and starts to trace the lines of his face.
âYou look human. Sorta.â
His fingers dance down Castielâs jaw, sweeping across his chin.
âBut...I look at you, and know you're not...yâknow?â He laughs softly. âI can just tell. You're made of something else.â
Deanâs hands skim across Castielâs bare throat.
âWhen youâre wearing clothes,â he continues, a hint of mischief in his tone. âItâs always the same ugly-ass coat.â
Castiel makes a small indignant sound.
âIt is not ugly.â
âJust saying.â
Dean grins, loose and easy, tangling his fingers in Castielâs own.
âYou could rock the whole badass look. Black cloak, scytheâthe whole deal.â
âThe scythe was quite cumbersome,â Castiel deadpans.
Dean looks at him for a moment until he realizes Castielâs jokingâand he laughs.
âAnd you got one hell of a sense of humor,â he murmurs, leaning in.
Castiel accepts the kiss, closing his eyes. Despite all heâs seen, all heâs suffered, Dean is still so full of love. The resilience of humans will never fail to astound Castiel, but Dean is something else.Â
He pulls back, smiling softly, then reaches up, tugging at Castielâs hair.Â
âThis is brown. Really dark brown, almost black. Way darker than mine.âÂ
Dean looks at him, lowering his voice.
âYour eyes are blue, and they're the prettiest eyes I've ever seen.â
Castiel catches his hand, pressing a small kiss to his palm.
Deanâs smile fades as he watches Castiel, his chest rising and falling slowly. Castielâs does not.Â
He does not breathe.
âWhen I gonna die, Cas?â Dean whispers.
 Castiel goes still.Â
Dean searches his face.Â
âCâmon,â he says, a slight shake in his voice. âYou gotta know.â
Castiel looks at him, and realizes he does not.Â
âI don't,â he says, shocking himself with the words.Â
Dean doesn't heed him, barreling on.
âBecause when I die, I mean what ifââ
He stops, fear in his eyes.
âWhat if I never see you again?â Dean whispers.
Castiel cradles Deanâs face in his hand, shaking his head, opening his mouth to whisper false words of comfort.Â
That's when he feels a tug at the edges of his being, and heâs being pulled halfway across the world, to the next death.Â
The last thing Castiel sees are Deanâs panicked green eyes, before everything turns to black.
â
âSAM, NOââ
Dean runs, his scream rending the night air.
âNo, no, Sammyââ
He reaches Sam just before he collapses, dropping with him in the wet dirt.Â
âDeanââ Sam chokes out, as the perpetrator runs away with his crime into the dark. âIâmâIâm sorry, I didnât meanââ
âHey, hey, noâitâs okay, alright?â Dean tries to pull him up, support him, even as Sam falls to his knees, slumping forward. âYouâre fineâitâs fine, itâs not even that bad, itâs notââ
Dean cuts off. He lifts a shaky hand from the wet patch spreading over Samâs back, seeing it come away covered in slick red.
âShit,â he breathes lowly.
Sam says something, jagged and garbled in his throat. Dean shushes him, hands coming to his face.Â
âNo, no, Sammy, youâre gonna be fineâwe faced worse before, you just need toââ
Samâs face is ashen white, his eyes starting to slip closed. Dean gasps back a choked breath.
âCâmon, Sammy,â he begs. âCome on.â
He looks around, to cry for help, for something, anythingâ
And he sees Castiel.
 âNo,â Dean breathes.
  âI'm sorry, Dean,â Castiel whispers.
âNo,â Dean snarls again, gripping the back of his brother's jacket.
He doesn't have long. Samuel Winchesterâs heart is pushing the blood out of him, slowly but surely. It won't take more than a few minutes.
Castiel takes a few steps forward, but Dean jerks back, dragging Sam backward, shielding him with his own body.Â
Dean meets Castielâs eyes. He's broken.Â
âNo, Cas,â he whispers. âPlease, no.â
Castielâs hands tremble.
âI have to.â
Sam breathes in raggedly.
âJust a few more years,â Dean whispers. âPlease.â
âOne year, just one year, câmon, at least give him somethingââ
Dean stops, choking back sobs. His breath spirals silently into the night air, the ground slick with rain and blood.
âIâm sorry, Dean,â Castiel murmurs.
He kneels beside them and places a hand on Samâs forehead.Â
Dean watches, bone-white and utterly defeated.Â
Sam gasps.
âDean,â he murmurs. âI...I see him.â
Dean looks down at him, shocked out of his stupor.
âY-yeah?âÂ
âYeah,â Sam whispers. âYour angel...Cas.âÂ
Dean nods silently, tears dripping down thick and fast.
âHe was real after all,â Sam mumbles, his head drooping onto Dean's chest.
Dean stares down at his brotherâs pale face, hands clenched in the loose folds of his jacket.
Seconds, now.
Castiel closes his eyes. He has no heart, but heâs sure this is what it feels like when it breaks.Â
âTake me.â
Castiel looks up sharply.
Deanâs jaw is set, his eyes are firm.Â
âTake me instead,â he orders again.
Castiel stutters, fear constricting his throat.
âDean, Iââ
 He stops, shaking his head.Â
âI canât,â he whispers.
âBullshit, you canât,â Dean spits back. âYou saved me.â
 âIââ
His argument dies in his throat.Â
As Castiel beholds him, stares into Deanâs eyesâhis fate is murky, the truth to Castiel lost in shadow.
Dean reaches out, catching the edge of Castielâs sleeve.
"Please," he begs. "Please, Cas."
Castiel shudders, and looks back to Samâs pale face.
âAnd you would leave him here alone?â He swallows thickly. âWithout you.â
Dean is silent for a long moment. When Castiel finally musters the courage to look back at him, his normally carefree face is drawn tight, resignation heavy on his shoulders.
âI ainât supposed to be here, Cas,â he whispers. âI felt it. Ever sinceâŚâ
 Castiel knows.Â
Ever since he ripped up the rules, leaving nothing.
âI was supposed to die,â Dean says quietly. âMaybe I should. â
Samâs breathing slows, his face grows slack.
Dean tightens his grip, knuckles white.Â
âItâll be hard for him at first,â he breathes, looking down at Sam. âForâfor both of us. But I know heâll understand.â
Castiel cannot think. Dean cannot fathom what heâs asking of him.
 âCas.â
Deanâs voice breaks on his name.
âCasâplease,â he whispers.Â
A soft touch on his cheek.
âWeâll see each other again,â Dean breathes, swallowing thickly. âR-right?â
Castiel folds his hand over Deanâs.Â
âRight,â he whispers, but heâs not sure if it's true.
He slowly places his other hand on Samâs, and looks up into Deanâs eyes. He nods, just once.
Sam bolts upright, just as Dean slumps over, the light fading from his eyes.
Castiel sags, the transfer of energy leaving him weak. It's like watching a film in reverseâSam rises dazedly, and when he understands what has occurred, he is the one now shaking his brotherâs lifeless body, agony in his voice.
âDean!â He calls, looking around wildly. âCastiel, you son of a bitch, donât you dareâbring him backââ
He continues raging, cursing Castiel in one breath and begging for help in the next.
 âIâm sorry, Sam,â Dean whispers.
Sam stills, hiccuping.
âBe good, alright?â Dean continues softly. âYou keep fighting. And take care of my wheels.â
Sam drops his head, stifling a choked laugh. Dean smiles, sad and bittersweet.
âRemember what Dad taught you, okay?â He murmurs. âAnd what I taught you.â
Behind them, a soft white light begins to glow, banishing the obscure dark. Sam does not notice, or see. He is too caught up in his grief, mourning over a now-empty shell.
The universe demanded the soul of a Winchester, and it got one. Yet a life traded for another cannot move on.Â
Castiel knows this.Â
Beside him, Deanâs hand finds his.
Castiel shivers. Not candle-warm, like the other souls heâs helped cross over. Deanâs hand is as cold as his own.
 âLet's go, Cas,â Dean whispers. âI can't see this.â
They turn away, Castiel giving one last look to the brother theyâre leaving behind.
And they walk forward into the light.
ââ
Castielâs work has always been demanding. Souls dying everywhere across the globe, some within the same second.Â
With two, the job is somewhat easier.Â
ââ
She opens her eyes. She mustâve slipped under again, a brief respite from the pain.
She sits up and is surprised to find the motion does not hurt her. In fact, nothing hurts anymore. Instead, she feels only lightness.
âWell, you sure took your sweet time.â
She turns, startled to see a man standing at the foot of her bed.
He clicks his tongue, pulling back the edge of a leather glove to tap a shining watch on his wrist.
âWeâre late enough as it is,â he says expectantly. âAnd I donât got all day, seeing as my brotherâll kill me if I donât get to visit him again.â
He thinks a moment, then chuckles, a wry smile playing around his lips.
âWell.â He smirks. âHe would if he could.â
She blinks a few times, bewildered.
âWho are you?âÂ
The man ignores her question, removing his gloves completely. Heâs tall, impeccably dressed in a dark suit and black cloak.Â
âTessa, right?â
He smiles, extending a hand.
On his fourth finger is a ring, white ivory in a square setting.
 Tessa doesnât move.
âIâm dead.â
 The man winks.
âBingo,â he answers. âOr âcondolencesâ, as Cas would say.â
Before she can ask what that's supposed to mean, the man quickly checks his watch again, speaking brusquely.
âOkay, but seriously, come on.â He jerks his head, nodding over his shoulder. Youâd think weâd have all the time in the world, but turns out we run on a very tight schedule.â
Tessa eyes him warily.
âAnd...where are we going?âÂ
âYâknow.â The man gestures vaguely. âOn. As they say.â
âOn,â she repeats.
 The man smirks.
âYeah. Dust in the wind and all that.â
She frowns.
âWhat?â
âItâs aââ The man stops, waving an impatient hand. âYou know whatânever mind.â
He turns, beckoning once again. Seeing no other option, Tessa falls into step beside him.Â
Before them is a warm silver light, growing brighter by the second.
They reach the threshold of what seems to be a shimmering door, a gateway.
Tessa takes a deep breath. Despite everything, she is not afraid.Â
She looks back at her strange shepherd, gathering her courage.
âSo.â
He glances up, raising an eybrow.
âYouâre Death,â she says.
The man chuckles, once again pulling on his black gloves. Â
Iâm still so Jackdamn mad we didnât get Death!Cas. Dean ending up as Deathâs husband wouldâve been so poetic and hilarious on multiple levels, since he had such strange relationships with the last two, not to mention murdered both of them. Cas could tease him about it:
âI hope youâre not planning to kill me too.â
âI should probably hide my scythe somewhere you canât get to it.â
âYou canât kill this Death, youâd have to divorce me first.â
Plus Dean is the character who has died and come back the most. Now itâs not even an issue. âOh, you stabbed me in the chest? Pfft. Iâll be back in three minutes. The grim reaper is my booty call.â (He gets that on a t-shirt.)
And also Cas could take Dean with him when he finally reaps Chuck. Dean would laugh and say, âHope you like Hell, shitheel! You know, since you sent me there!â
So many opportunities for comedy. So much wasted potential.
