If youâre deaf, do you use sign language?
i wasnât born deaf so I use my voice almost exclusively, but I know sign :)
so I have super bad tinnitus and sometimes it manifests as words and I swear to god I just heard Pippin Took say âmany breakfastsâ into my brain
"unmute this!! đ" kay, but I'm deaf
Hey guys!! Sorry for not posting lately, quarantine is kicking my butt. Letâs keep in good spirits and get to thinking.
âShare your favorite sign and why?â
My favorite sign as of now is âwhale,â because itâs one of my favorite animals.

"Deafhood is not seen as a finite state but as a process by which deaf individuals come to actualize their deaf identity, positing that those individuals construct that identity around several differently ordered sets of priorities and principles, which are affected by various factors such as nation, era, and class."
H-Dirksen L. Bauman, Open Your Eyes
Hi, how you doing? I just read your âhow to write deaf charactersâ post and appreciated it very much. Iâm curious now though, why are cochlear implants controversial among the Deaf community? Also, how do parents/siblings communicate with their Deaf child if they donât learn sign language (since you mentioned them not learning it is a common thing)? Thank you in advance for your answers and I apologize if this has been asked before.
Hi!Â
So, cochlear implants are just a big no-no in the Deaf community. At least in my experience. Most born and raised Deaf people believe that cochlear implants are the hearing worldâs way of eradicating the Deaf population (kinda). Cochlear implants arenât a cure for deafness because most of the time they donât even work. Only certain select people can get implants because you still need to have some level of hearing for it to possibly work. But most importantly, Deaf people donât want to hear. They love being Deaf and donât want to be âfixedâ.Â
This has also lead to the romanticization of cochlear implants. You always see videos shared on the internet of âchild hearing mother for the first timeâ or whatever. Hearing people cry and proclaim âitâs a miracle!â even though its not. They canât hear. Itâs mechanical and fake. Deaf people looooathe those videos because it makes it seem like being Deaf is a problem when itâs not.Â
And Iâve already answered your second question hereÂ
