Conversations with DDM-38 (1)
Takes place alongside the events of Thursdayâs Child. Caleb talks with his fatherâs droid, DDM-38 (DeeDee).
(DeeDee canât tell Caleb and Hux apart, because her facial recognition software isnât sophisticated enough)
The droid seemed to look at him with a blank faceplate, and extended a metallic hand, the long fingers stretching over his own. He almost jumped at the coolness of the touch.
âDonât cry. He doesnât like it when you cry.â Her voice was barely more comforting than her appearance, yet he sensedâŚsomething behind the droidâs words.
âItâs fine, DeeDee,â Caleb reassured her, wiping his eyes with his other hand. âNobodyâs going to see. Itâll be our secret.â
âSecret?â The droid tilted her head, thoughtful.
âYes. Like the holovids you showed me just now, the ones Mother made just for me.â DeeDee considered this for a moment before giving a gesture that he hoped indicated acceptance, even if he did doubt Brendol had little interest in his emotions.
âWould you like to play a game?â she asked suddenly, seemingly eager to change the subject.
âI am not familiar with that game.â
âWould you like to pick the game, DeeDee?â
âYou used to enjoy strategy games,â she said, her head turning as she scanned the room, expression as blank as always. âI require more information about the layout of the Finalizer to locate them.â
âThatâs okay, Iâm a little tired anyway. Weâll play another time. I could teach you how to play sabacc.â
âI would like that.â DeeDee began to release the grip on his hand, but paused at the sound of a particularly nasty cough. âAre you unwell?â Something about her tone was different this time.
âItâs just a cold. A good nightâs sleep ought to help.â
