His best performances are rootable characters, even if they have all the human flaws. So how should the DCEU do, with you know- The Joker being deplorable? Give him a backstory. I know, I know he’s a villain best left ambigious blah blah blah but I think you’d get a much stronger performance out of Leto if there are scenes where we see development- the overall response will be better. I’m not saying ‘make him rootable’ or to downplay what makes The Joker so terrifying- but the DCEU would be better off if they make him more three dimensional.

I know, that’s controversial. And when I say ‘dark’ I don’t mean a Batman that is violent or abusive. I mean a jaded, cynical Batman that is motivated primarily by pain and a dying philosophy that once represented hope. I don’t want him to make jokes constantly, or be like Tony Stark. 

I want a Batman that makes mistakes. That learns and grows. That has a character arc. That when facing Deathstroke, it actually seems they could be the same person underneath their armour and suits. A Batman that doesn’t win medals for social skills. 

The ‘MCU’ approach- of humour, light gags does not fit DC’s Batman. He is a dark character who ‘knows pain.’ 

When you make a film that takes its self seriously- yes, you are opening yourself up to be mocked and ridiculed for that. But it’s a gutsy, daring move. Logan took itself seriously, and that was praised and loved. So why can’t Batman?
