#Repost @museumofcityny with @repostapp ・・・ This is the Pierce Arrow Building in Long Island City. The company, based in Buffalo from 1903-1938, evolved from a luxury birdcage manufacturer established in 1865. One of the owners, Henry N. Pierce, bought out his partners and began building and selling bicycles and motorcycles in 1896, making the leap to cars in 1901. The company’s first commercial success was the four-cylinder Great Arrow, arrived in 1904. George Pierce sold all his company rights in 1907 and passed away in 1910, the company was known as Pierce-Arrow from 1908 to 1938. This building, was built in 1913 in the “daylight factory” style. The daylight factory is a multi-story concrete frame industrial building that was popular in the early twentieth century. This building type featured open floor space, with less obtrusive support columns. Also, the floor to ceiling window walls allowed for light and airy workplaces. Unfortunately, Pierce-Arrow fell into bankruptcy at the start of the Great Depression and the building was sold off in 1935. The manufacturer folded in 1938, and it was bought by the Seagrave company, who manufacture fire trucks to this day. #NYAtItsCore #NYCHistory #PierceArrow #throwback #tbt #factoryhistory #industrialhistory #daylightfactory . . .
