Coach Carlo Parisi, "I decided to recruit Lee Dayeong on the recommendation of the Korea National Team Head Coach."

Coach Carlo Parisi willingly agreed to the interview on the 2nd of September, right after the training ended for Lee Dayeong and her teammates.

When asked about his motivation behind his recruitment of Lee Dayeong, he mentioned the name of Cesar Hernandes Gonzales, the current head coach of the Korea National Team.

Coach Cesar had worked together with Coach Parisi as coach and head coach respectively for 4 years. The relationship between the two of them dates back to 2015. At the time, Coach Parisi was the head coach at Lokomotiv Baku at Azerbaijan, and the coach at the time was Coach Cesar.

After which, the two of them worked together on Le Cannet Volleyball in 2016-17, and then on Italy's Scandicci from 2017-2019. After 4 years of working together, Coach Parisi accepted the advice from Coach Cesar who had recommended Lee Dayeong.

Coach Parisi revealed that he still maintains a very close relationship with Coach Cesar in the interview. Coach Cesar had been working as a coach for the Korea National Team since 2019, and he had worked together with Lee Dayeong on the National Team for 2 years.

Coach Parisi explained the process of deciding to sign Lee Dayeong, "I had a good impression about Lee Dayeong, and I asked my friend Cesar 'How do you feel about this player?'. Although Lee Dayeong is no longer a member of the National Team, Cesar told me many good things about her."

Dayeong shared her feelings on playing in Romania,

"I was looking forward to the transfer inwardly", while revealing, "I cried for a long time because of the messages I received on the night before my departure.”

The interview was held at Lee Dayeong's home in Bucharest, Romania on the 1st Sept (Korea time), in the snug dorm provided by her new club Rapid Bucuresti.

"A head coach whom I wanted to receive guidance from... I was happy to receive the recruitment offer."

Dayeong explained, "The training regimen is slightly more systematic than in Greece. The Italian head coach, together with his Italian coaches, brought in the authentic volleyball training system as it was. It is a method which suits me very well".

It is said that Coach Parisi had an eye on Lee Dayeong for a long time while watching her play during her time on PAOK, the opposing team of his previous club Olympiacos in Greece.

Dayeong shared, "Actually the most important thing is one's coordination with the coach. I've known about Coach Parisi even when I was in Greece, I had also heard the news early in that he decided to head to Romania."

"I thought to myself that 'I'd like to follow Coach Parisi' on the inside. I was really happy that an opportunity to learn from Coach Parisi came to me."

But there were also worries.

Dayeong explained, "Before I came to Romania, the club was slightly concerned about my English. Because there is often the need for setters to be able to communicate in-depth with the coach."

With her transfer to the Greece league last season, it was the first time Lee Dayeong had started living abroad. Since then she had been consistently receiving English lessons.

Would you be able to describe what the European league style is like specifically? Dayeong: It is to increase the utilization of the middle blockers and to play fast through them. The recent European volleyball style is to utilize the back attacks more while playing front row attacks. In the Greece league we focused mainly on using front row attacks, but I believe back attacks will be used more often in the new team.

What have you been up to after the Greece league concluded in May? Dayeong: I went to Vancouver, Canada with an older sister I knew right after the season ended, and spent a month there. I spent a few days in London afterwards, before returning to Greece for a week to pack my luggages and returned to Korea on the 25th June. I spent time with my family, friends I knew since young, and met and chatted with older sisters whom I'm close to when I was back in Korea. I continued to train consistently during my break. Thanks to the help from my alma mater (Jinju Seonmyeong Girls High School), I was able to have individual trainings at night. I'm worried that the school or the people who have offered their help would get cursed at because of me.

Did you receive any separate training schedule from your new club Rapid Bucuresti? Dayeong: Not yet. I believe that we will begin training with the ball immediately upon arrival, so I am preparing myself in Korea. There are less than two months before the start of the new season.

I am curious about why you transferred though you were liked by many at PAOK and the results weren't bad. Dayeong: I was contacted by Bucuresti at the beginning of March. Coach Carlo Parisi said that he wanted me. Though he was the coach who had helped Olympiacos achieve #1*, it seemed like he viewed me well when competing against us on an opposing team. Though we had not exchanged any words, he revealed his intention to recruit me as I was 'a player whom he wished to help develop'. Though offers with better conditions could have came from other leagues if I had waited, I wanted to go with someone who believed in me and made my decision early. I have more to learn as a player if I wished to compete in overseas leagues for a long time from now on. After I had signed the contract, I heard that several clubs from Italian and Polish leagues had sent offers to me.I was shocked after hearing that.'THAT team wants me?' was what I had thought. (*t/n: Olympiacos was #2 in the league under coach Carlo Parisi, not #1. There may have been a miscommunication or mistake.)

Do you have any information on the level of the Romanian league, or the players you will be playing with on Bucuresti? Dayeong: I don't know anything concrete. I know that it is at a higher level than the Greece league. I sort of know the two middle blockers whom I will be playing with on Bucuresti. One of them was a player on Panathinaikos in the Greece league and the captain of the Canadian National Team. The other player is someone whom I've met before at the VNLs in the past.

There was a change of coach halfway during the season in PAOK. Dayeong: The previous coach was the one who had recruited me and viewed me well. It was a difficult period after the coach changed. In exchange I have gained a lot from it. I learnt a lot from the new coach who was from Italy.

If you could elaborate more on that? Dayeong: I was able to understand the Italian style of volleyball thanks to the coach. What I remember specifically was, the center play. I learnt the over play* utilizing the middle blockers. It was to set a C-quick to the outside hitter using the timing of a B-quick to a middle blocker. I also learnt how to set the ball while looking at the opposing blocker. The coach sternly enforced this saying that all world class setters does so.

I'm curious about the training style in Europe leagues. Dayeong: It was so different in comparison to v-league. Though the Greece league is not a big league in Europe, the level was still very high. It was especially difficult. The difference in physical and speed was big. Especially in terms of speed. The training was systematic yet detailed. Even though the training schedule was split 1h30min in the morning, and 2hrs in the afternoon, it was short but thorough. Situations from actual matches would be organized systematically, and we would focus till we were able to complete them all during the training. If there were any mistakes in any play during the training, training will be paused and everyone will gather to talk about it, before repeating it till we get it right. The trainings were as detailed as the real match, and we did not simply go over them roughly. During the season we would rest for one day after the match, and train continuously for the rest of the week. We did not relax and it felt like the amount of training was more compared to v-league.

I'm curious about how you travelled to Away Games, and how your life was like outside (the court). Dayeong: When we faced the Romania team during the CEV Cup, we travelled for 22 hours by bus. We took up to 25 hours on our way back. All the players would sleep on the bus and we would sometimes get off at a rest stop to have a meal, and that was all. The travelling was really difficult. If there was a match at Athens, we would take 8 hours just travelling by bus. We would return on the same day after the match ends. The travelling was the most difficult compared to v-league.

It must not have been easy leaving PAOK. Dayeong: It was even more so (difficult) because they were the team which had called for me when I was having a difficult time. Even my teammates whom I played together with said that it was 'a pity' regarding my move to the Romanian league. The staffs of the club also said 'we would miss you a lot' 'let's meet again next year'. I am reminded of the PAOK president and the general manager who took care of the team.They were the people and team who had took me in and embraced me when I was having the most difficult time. I could not feel good about packing my bags and leaving when they had treated me so well like a daughter.

You had a very difficult time while facing an extreme amount of criticism 1 year ago. If you were to look back on it? Dayeong: No one will be able to understand the circumstances I faced and how I felt during that time. I tried my hardest to not fall apart amidst that difficult time thinking that 'I have to (at least) do my job well if I wish to be able to say anything at all even it were much later'. I endured it alone because there was no one around me in Greece who had heard anything about it, nor anyone who criticized me. I treated the past year as a time to look back and grow mentally. I had a lot of worries when I was returning, but the people who had recognized me at the airport approached me first and held my hands encouraging me saying 'you endured well' and 'find strength'. It was really a big relief for me. I want to live well again and I will definitely succeed in overseas leagues.

루마니아 리그 라피드 부쿠레슈티에서 해외 리그 2번째 시즌을 맞이하는 이다영이 25일 출국한다. 8월 초 출국 예정이었지만 세계선수권대회 등 국제 대회로 유럽 리그 대부분이 소속 선수의 팀 합류 일정을 연기했다. 이다영도 이 바람에 출국을 연기하고 개인 훈련을 해왔다. 지난해에는 해외 이적을 놓고 대한배구협회와 오랜 실랑이를 하느라 10월 17일에야 그리스로 출국했다. 지금은 국제배구연맹(FIVB)이 인정하는 자유 신분으로 해외 진출의 걸림돌은 모두 사라졌다. 이다영은 이미 주한 루마니아 대사관에서 취업 비자도 받았다. 비록 축하를 받고 떠난 해외 진출은 아니었지만, 이다영은 그리스 리그 PAOK의 주전 세터로 역량을 보여줬다. 덕분에 훨씬 좋은 조건으로 루마니아의 명문 팀에서 새 시즌을 시작한다. 부쿠레슈티는 통산 19번 리그 우승을 차지한 전통의 팀이다. 가장 최근의 우승은 2005~2006시즌이었다. 지난 1년여 동안 그에 관해 많은 보도가 쏟아졌지만, 누구도 직접 얘기를 들지는 못했다. 출국을 앞둔 이다영에게 그동안 어떻게 지냈고 앞으로의 계획이 무엇인지 물었다.

PAOK에서 1년을 지내면서 나름 유럽 리그의 특징과 스타일에 적응했다. 이제는 감독이 무엇을 원하는지 빨리 알 것 같다.” -유럽 리그의 스타일이라고 했는데 구체적으로 무엇인지 궁금하다. “미들블로커의 활용을 높이고 이들을 이용한 빠른 플레이를 하는 것이다. 전위를 활용해 백어택을 많이 활용하는 것이 최근 유럽 배구의 스타일이다. 그리스 리그에서는 전위 위주의 공격을 많이 시도했는데 새로운 팀에서는 후위를 많이 활용해야 할 듯하다.” -5월에 그리스 리그를 마친 이후 어떻게 지냈는지 궁금하다.

“시즌이 끝나자마자 아는 언니가 있는 캐나다 밴쿠버로 가서 한 달 정도 지냈다. 이후 런던으로 이동해 며칠 머물렀고 그리스로 돌아가 일주일간 짐을 정리한 뒤 6월 25일 귀국했다. 한국에서는 가족과 시간도 보냈고 어릴 때 알던 친구, 친한 언니들도 만나 수다도 떨며 지냈다. 쉬는 동안에도 훈련은 꾸준히 했다. 주변에서 많은 분들이 도와준 덕분이다. 감사드린다. ” -새 소속 팀 부쿠레슈티로부터 따로 훈련 스케줄을 받은 것이 있는지. “아직은 없다. 도착하자마자 바로 볼 훈련을 시작할 것 같은데 그래서 한국에서 어느 정도 준비를 했다. 새 시즌까지 준비 기간이 두 달도 채 남지 않았다.” -PAOK의 많은 이들이 좋아했고 성적도 나쁘지 않았는데 이적했다. 이유가 궁금하다. “3월 초에 부쿠레슈티에서 연락이 왔다. 파를로 카리시 감독이 나를 원한다고 했다. 그리스 리그에서 올림피아코스를 1위로 만든 감독인데 상대 팀으로 경기를 할 때 나를 잘 봤던 모양이다. 얘기를 나눈 적도 없는데 ‘이 선수를 키워보고 싶다’면서 영입 의사를 밝혔다. 기다리면 더 좋은 조건과 다른 리그에서 제안이 올 수도 있었지만 나를 믿어주는 사람과 해보고 싶어서 일찍 결정했다. 앞으로 해외 리그에서 오래 선수 생활을 하려면 더 배워야 한다. 지금은 실력을 키워야 할 때다. 계약을 마치고 난 뒤 이탈리아와 폴란드 리그의 몇몇 팀에서 영입 제의가 왔다고 들었다. 그 말을 듣고 놀랐다. ‘그 팀이 나를?’ 이런 생각이었다.”

-조금 더 구체적으로 얘기한다면. “감독 덕분에 이탈리아 배구 스타일을 알았다. 특히 기억나는 것은, 센터 플레이다. 미들블로커를 이용한 오버 플레이를 배웠다. 미들블로커에게 B퀵을 쏴주는 타임에서 윙 공격수에게 C퀵을 쏴주는 것이다. 또 2단 연결 때 상대 블로커를 보고 패스하는 것도 배웠다. 세계적인 세터들이 모두 그렇게 한다면서 감독이 엄하게 시켰다.” -유럽 리그의 훈련 방식도 궁금하다. “V리그와 비교하면 너무 달랐다. 그리스 리그가 유럽에서 빅 리그는 아니라고 하지만 수준이 엄청 높았다. 굉장히 힘들었다. 피지컬과 스피드의 차이가 컸다. 특히 스피드가 남달랐다. 훈련은 체계적이면서도 디테일하게 했다. 훈련 시간은 오전, 오후로 각각 나뉘어 1시간 30분, 2시간 진행되는데 굵고 짧게 했다. 실전에서 나올 상황을 체계적으로 정리해 훈련 시간에 그것을 다 할 때까지 집중했다. 훈련 도중 어떤 플레이가 잘못되면 멈추고 모두 모여서 얘기를 한 뒤 그것이 제대로 될 때까지 했다. 훈련도 실전처럼 내용 있게 했고 대충 넘어가지 않았다. 시즌 때는 경기 끝나고 하루만 쉬고 다음 경기까지 일주일간 계속 연습했다. 느슨하지 않았고 훈련량은 V리그와 비교해서 더 많다는 느낌이었다.” -상대 경기장까지 이동 등 코트 밖의 생활도 궁금하다.
