26 The Winter’s Tale by William Shakespeare, dir by David Perry. Or the Winer’s Tale according to the program font. So remember how I said I choked auditioning for this season? It’s because I decided to change one of my monologues the night before the auditions for the directors, a mistake I would only make once more, auditioning for the same festival, using the same last minute substituted monologue, 4 years later. I guess the underlying message of this retrospective is that I have always been an idiot who CANNOT sing. Anyhoodle, I blanked and had to start over and I pronounced it like BLADE instead of like BAD and the director called me out in front of the entire company at the first meeting. He then proceeded to go up in his own address and we just sat there looking at him for five minutes while he searched for his thought, until finally he said “I seemed to have dried up a bit” and just let it go. That bear skin rug stayed on stage for the first act, then four actors in Koken wear would come out, collect it and then puppet it to chase off Antigonus for the exeunt pursued by bear. Something I would BORROW for Her Majesty’s Will, 25 years later. Since the actors were all in Koken gear, and the lights were off, they would pretend like they were Spider-man shooting webs at each other and moving dramatically across the stage. Which was hysterical the day we got rained in, were performing in Westhoff and someone left the fluorescents in the grid on. Since they had Koken masks covering their face they had no idea they were visible. Also, our Housing was a frat house when school was in session, and one of my roommates discovered a porno mag between his bed and the box spring upon moving in. A photo from that mag with the director’s head cut and pasted on to it would make it’s way into the message from the Oracle from Delphi, and the only person who didn’t know, was the one who had to read it. The other notable memory was my costume. A friend remarked, you had a very calming presence on stage.
