CORE picketed the hit Broadway musicals Subways Are for Sleeping and How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying.
Both took place in New York yet featured all white casts.
Broadway producer David Merrick explained, "We auditioned Negroes, but couldn't find any that pleased us, any that got past the choreography director or any that had the right look and were the right size and type."
