The United Kingdom simply underestimated Ireland's clout and the importance of the border backstop. Add to that Theresa May's unpopularity and cabinet disloyalty and you have all the main causes of the mess Brexit turned into, according to one of the ex-prime minister's key allies in government.

Lidington still does not understand what happened. Ireland did not need to call in favours. A return to armed violence was a real possibility in Ireland. The EU would have supported any member state so threatened by Brexit. The EU has given Spain a veto over anything related to Gibraltar in the upcoming trade negotiations. Spain did not need to call in any favours either as the EU already regards Gibraltar as a UK colony which is not good for the UK. This did not matter when the UK was in the EU. The EU stands by its members and the UK is no longer a member.
