The DC comic character Swamp Thing (created by Len Wein and Bernie Wrightson) made the leap to the big screen with a release date of February 19, 1982. It was one of the rare theatrical DC films not released by Warner Brothers. It was written and directed by Wes Craven who would become famous for the Nightmare on Elm Street and Scream franchises. There were two theatrical cuts of the film with the international cut containing more nudity. The international release was accidently released in the US with the first DVD release, but had to be recalled due to complaints and it being against Barbeau's contract. DC did a comic adaptation of the film written by Bruce Jones and art by Mark Texeira. The movie was not a major hit and Craven said if took almost 2 years after the film's release to get another job. The property inspired one sequel (Return of the Swamp Thing - 1989), two live action TV series (1990 - 1993 & 2019) and one cartoon series (1990 - 1991). The movie, like the comics, was about Dr Alec Holland (Ray Wise) who was turned into the Swamp Thing (Dick Durock) and chased by Doctor Arcane (Louis Jourdan) who wanted to exploit him. Adrienne Barbeau played the love interest, who in the film version was named Alice Cable. ("Swamp Thing" DC Movie Event)
