Order of the Pineapple 2026: Dolphin Blue and David Gerrold
Photo of dolphin by NASA; photo of David Gerrold by Gage Skidmore. What do science fiction novel and script author David Gerrold, and Discordian/SubGenius website administrator Dolphin Blue, have in common? They are both named to the Order of the Pineapple for 2026! And they both accepted the award almost immediately. The winners are announced each year on January 18 (in some timezone) which is…

As a young teen who wanted to be a writer, I picked up my library's copy of David Gerrold's book Worlds of Wonder: How to Write Science Fiction and Fantasy. Recently I've reread it and a lot still holds up! (E.g., Gerrold's enthusiastic about science fiction's ability to expand our understanding of gender and acknowledges there are people in real life who live outside the male/female binary - which probably also had a good influence on young teenage me.)
He also has some writing advice that doubles as life advice, such as "Most problems aren't about handling the problem. They're about not handling the problem. By saying 'I can't handle this,' the hero guarantees that the situation will not only persist but get worse."
One insight that has stuck with me as 1) very encouraging when I'm trying to brainstorm solutions to a plot hole and 2) downright terrifying when I consider its impact in the real world is:
It's how the human mind words. The mind looks for connections. The mind insists on structure. Without it, the mind flails. And if there is no immediately discernible structure, the mind makes stuff up--whatever is convenient, to fill the gap. Go out and ask people questions that you know they couldn't possibly know the answer to. "Who really killed Kennedy?" "Why was the third season of the original Star Trek so awful?" "When will he write the fifth book?" Out of a hundred people, you will be lucky to find five who are honest enough to say, "I don't know." The rest will make something up. Most people would rather die than admit they don't know something.
I'm pretty confident that if people keep asking questions about a story, we can put together a plot. I'm very nervous about how if people keep asking questions about real life, they can put together bullshit or conspiracy theories.
My old friend David Gerrold needs some help!

Putting It All Into Perspective
One of the few people I follow on Facebook is David Gerrold, writer-author-screenwriter, and yesterday he shared something that literally took my breath away and brought a tear to my eyes. This story … whether truth or fiction (I suspect it is some parts of both) is one that I think we all need to read, to be reminded of who and what really matters in this world of technology, cryptocurrency and…
