Who is behind that mask?

Why is he hiding behind a mask?

How much did he know about Ananke’s plans?

Who is “the Pink one”?

Why is he protecting them?

Why can’t he perform?

Is he even a god?

There are many theories about him.

About a year and a half ago I even wrote these 2 posts.

Is Woden a sacrifice?

This issue essentially proves that theory right... but it just seems a bit too easy?

I mean, why was the reveal done right then? It all started and ended so quickly. It’s like...”Hey, is Woden Blake’s kid?” “Yeah, he is” in less then 6 pages.

And if Jon is really Woden, then who is the pink one? And why is Jon trying to protect them?

His mother? I don’t know, why would she be a god? Another sibling? It doesn’t look like he has a sibling. The creature from 1832? Perhaps, but how? It would have to be reintroduced in the core book, rather than the specials. A dead god? Woden says he won’t let them be next, as he just listed them as the previous sacrifices.

It just seemed like something was off, but earlier today as I was discussing the book with @enigmatic-wankery​ I remembered something Woden said about Cass in #14.

What if that’s what is happening? Both in the book and outside of it? Blake to Cassy, and Gillen to us?

What if Woden isn’t actually Jon? And David was just misdirecting Cass? IMO, he was being VERY obvious. He could have just yelled “HEY CASS, WODEN IS MY SON”. The constant use of “gifted” wasn’t very subtle. 

It’s all just too easy. 

“Woden fetishizes asian women because of his mommy issues, and is a total dick because of his daddy issues”.

It almost seemed on purpose. Like he was trying to lead her to that conclusion.

But why would he do that?

Well, I’m going to point you towards someone else’s theory. What if Woden is actually David himself? @pomegranate-salad​ made a great post last year, during the WicDiv challenge month, listing quite a few reasons why Woden could actually be David himself. 

And I’ll add one more I noticed today. This panel.

That scene was all about David’s son, except this panel. This one is about him. Look how angry he is as he says his line.

We know Woden lusts after Cassandra. Not just because she’s a tall asian woman, but because of her intelligence. And we know he thinks he can’t have her. “Almost”.

I read this line as Blake passive-agressively saying he’s mad Cassandra only thought of him as this old professor, and not something else. Older men resenting younger women for not thinking of them as potential dates/partners is very much a thing. 

But I don’t think he was lying when he implied his son was a god. I just don’t think he meant Woden, I think he meant the Pink one. Who is the real Woden.

I think David is still trying to keep the real Woden (his son) hidden from everyone else. As someone who has studied the recurrence all his life, he probably knew from the start what it meant to be part of it.

He may have even known about Ananke, and what she planned to do. So he made a deal with Ananke, kept his son hidden, and took his place. An inversion of the Abraham and Isaac story. Which is why Ananke could control him.

Also, if Woden is really Jon, then what did Ananke have on him? Being Blake’s kid is hardly a big secret. What else could she have on him? That he helped her knowingly? Perhaps, but that doesn’t explain why he started helping her.

Or you know, maybe I’m overhinking this, and Jon really is Woden and that’s it. 

Occam’s razor right? 

“Among competing hypotheses, the one with the fewest assumptions should be selected.”

Although... who was it that used that argument before to maybe misdirect someone?

Bonus theory:

Something that just occured to me. 

In #23 in his interview Woden said he is a Game of Thrones fan. The book came out in 1996, what if he named his son after Jon Snow? If his son is 18 or younger it could be the case.

And Gillen had just referenced Luci by using the “they fuck you up” reference. Luci, a character that was also named after something their parents were fans of (Eleanor Rigby/The Beatles).
