my mind is capable of polycules that would give you nightmares.

Characters who do everything in their power to emulate their Guardian/Ancestor as both a self defense mechanism for growing up in an abusive situation and as a way to try and fit into their assigned gender roles. Frequently, their attempts to do so both hurt themselves and damage their relationships with the people around them.

This way of approaching life leads to them internalizing and embodying some of the worst traits of the society that raised them (Vriska is pretty obvious to anyone whose thought about her for five seconds, but the fandom pretty heavily sleeps on Dave’s support of capitalism and misogynistic undercurrents at times)

It's only after they meet alternate versions of their aforementioned Guardian/Ancestor that they're able to begin to unpack these worldviews, come to grips with the fact that the way they were raised was, in fact, abusive, and open the door of self reflection enough to potentially transition later in life.
