Dave Schultz Didnât Start With a Fight - He Started With a Goal
Everyone remembers Dave âThe Hammerâ Schultz as one of the toughest players in NHL history. But when he broke into the league with the Philadelphia Flyers in 1972-73, his first big moment wasnât dropping the gloves, it was lighting the lamp.
In just his second NHL game, Schultz scored his first career goal against the Vancouver Canucks and even added an assist later in the game. No penalties. No fights. Just offense.
The fighting came two nights later in Detroit, when Schultz finally dropped the gloves and racked up 21 penalty minutes in one chaotic night, a sign of what was to come as the Flyers built their âBroad Street Bulliesâ identity.
