[Can't smile without you] [Poly!Davekat x afab!reader] [headcanons]
Warnings: Afab reader but tried to keep it as general as I possibly could. Poly relationships, NSFW sprinkled throughout, self indulgent, mentions of Jealously, Dom/Sub dynamics??? Idk what else, im projecting in this
Word count: 1.8k (jesus)
A/N: I have never written a poly couple before so like, no idea how everyones dynamics are but im sure its specialized to each group so like. Okay. I could be their silly little girlfriend who they spoil btw. This is literally hcs for me and my selfship with them ngl but I made it reader friendly. I don't wanna hear SHIT this is a special piece 2 me, I cry thinking of them loving me after what my ex did to me lmao.
Special shoutout 2 my bestie @layer01 ,,, I love u thank u for listening to me ramble about this last night and indulging me in my self ship <33
- I know this is a hot take but if u were in a poly relationship with them, dave is calling the shots first and foremost. Karkat second and then you're third. Of course this is subject to change but that's how the dynamic flows naturally.
- You bat your lashes and they fold tho to whatever you wanna do but STILL!!
-karkat is so clingy and they fight over you bc dave wants to hug you too and karkat is literally trying to burrow into your skin, his arms are so tight around you and Dave is trying to tug him off and Karkat fucking hisses.
"YOU HAD THEM THIS MORNING, FUCK OFF.
"If you move you greedy ass crab, we can ALL cuddle."
"NO."
- Or Karkat watches as you kiss on dave and hes fucking POUTING in the corner growling
"Guess I'm NOT WANTED." Literally no one said that come join the cuddle pile bro
-Theyre so needy.
- Dave playing off being jealous when you talk to anyone who isn't him or karkat and karkat fucking being 10x meaner about insulting anyone who is talking to you both bc they have, severe issues with jealously.
- I like the idea of dave never elaborating on what you guys are
"This is my girlfriend and boyfriend." "What?" "Anyways."
- Karkat; if anyone so much as touches either of you I will literally beat them to death with my sickles
You and Dave with nose bleeds: Hot.
-hmmmm Dave loves getting cheek kisses and karkat loving his forehead kissed, they fluster so hard when you kiss them before you leave to do anything, even if its going to shower, you give them each a peck and they have to reboot for a few seconds.
-Karkat almost dies when you brush away his hair from his forehead and gently kisses his forehead like he's the center of your universe UGH.
- Dave who makes you both playlists and theres love songs he'd dedicated to you both, different songs bc ofc yall are different people but the love is still there. He painstakingly went through and added songs with lyrics that remind him of you individually and all together.
- Sharing a Spotify jam with them and you queue songs that form a sentence and it's small things like "I love you." and they melt.
- The way yall sleep together is Dave is on his back, you're curled up into his side and karkat is hanging off of you, face buried into your back and his arms wrapped around your middle.
- Dave and Karkat run warm and you run cold so they make it a point to make sure you're covered, Karkatâs hands splayed around your stomach and he is purring.
- Your head is always over Dave's heart bc it helps with your nightmares.,,,Dave has his arm laid across you and his hand on karkat's head rubbing circles into his hair so he can feel you both bc he has nightmares youve both left him and he's alone in that apartment again. So scared he'll be alone again.
- But then you nuzzle into his chest, drooling a little on him and the rumbles from Karkat's chest vibrates strongly through you that he also feels it and it soothes him. Kisses your forehead and tries his best to rub a thumb across Karkats cheek from his position. He loves you two so much dude I'm gonna cry.
- He LOVES watching you and Karkat bicker and then suddenly make up by clinging to each other. Heâll lean on the doorframe like,
âDamn, thatâs hot,â and Karkat will scream at him to stop being a creep and watching y'all.
- There really aren't many fights between you three, bickering yes but full out fights? Not common. Dave loves you both too much to ever really raise his voice, more prone to shutting down and self isolating than fight.
- Karkat DOES raise his voice but has been working on it because the one time you flinched back from him and curled into yourself when he slaps his hands on the desk made him genuinely feel sick to his stomach.
-Karkat who doesn't believe he actually bagged (2) humans and he's constantly worried he's too alien or too weird until you both kiss him all over including his grub scars and his horns, please kiss attack this man he NEEDS to know how cherished he is.
- Dave picking you up and throwing you over his shoulder while Karkat trails behind you ranting that someone else was making googly eyes at you.
- they take their positions as knights so seriously when it comes to you. They do NOT play about you or one another. They have severe attachment issues due to how they were raised so they admittedly have unheathy habits you'll have to guide them on, unless you're into that and y'all can all be freak 4 freaks which is honestly preferable to them both bc they are both insane in their own ways.
- Karkat is the most protective out of you three, but you're lowkey insane and they have to tell you like hey, we think its hot and are into it but you can't tell someone to kill themselves over us. We don't object for moral reasons but yk you can get in trouble.
-This is fully indulgent for my sake but they like boobs in their mouth sorry.
-Both of them latch on idgaf, they fight and mumble when the other takes up too much space, karkat growling a bit and you're like guys I have two tits for a reason stop fighting.
-theyre not used to being babied so they like, get affection boners when you're soft and ever so slightly maternal towards them.
- Dave was raised by Bro and there is no way Bro didn't have a fucked up view of women even if it was slightly so Dave??? I feel like he's the type to be like oh I don't need a woman's love whats so great about them and then you kiss his cheek and baby him and bring in decor into his room and hes like wow this is. Different. No swords in his room?? No smuppets??? Just regular plushies??
- Like oh wow okay you're soft snd smells good and cooing at me FUCKKKK, instant hard ons, they stare at each other like this
-gets a warm fuzzy feeling seeing one of your fuzzy blankets laid out across his bed, Karkat's sweat messily on the floor. God he's so soft and happy to see traces of you two littered throughout his home.
- They fight over who showers with you, they shower with one another regular but when you join them, they wanna make sure you feel included so there's a schedule!!!
- Dave prefers to shower where as Karkat likes to bathe and they both cling onto you and the only reason why they don't do it at the same time is bc the shower is simply too small for these heathens. (Tall Karkat and Dave and you're their small little partner idc this is my truth)
- Dave likes to hold you while you're both underneath the steam and he has his face pressed against your hair and he just enjoys the silence.
- Karkat makes both of you take self care more seriously bc he loves you and wants you to not neglect yourselves.
- Like not to project but both you and Dave had neglectful homes and just. Forget to do basic things such as eat or drink water or even breath your teeth. Denies you kisses until he watches you brush your fuckass teeth.
- You struggle with washing your hair because its tiring so Karkat will wash it for you while Dave will dry it and then do a messy braid to keep it out your face. The braids suck ass but he has tried so hard to learn for you so you say nothing.
-You and karkat stealing daves clothes,,,,hnnng
- you are the weird gf who steals anything so you will wear daves boxers if he leaves them out. Too bad they're comfy.
- 'Why are my boxers stretched out" stares directly at you as you sleep in them, laid out on top of Karkat who's in his time shirt.
- Shakes his head and mumbles under his breath that he spoils y'all too fucking much.
- Dave steals ur panties tho so its equal exchange, snags them off the floor and puts them in his hoodie pocket for later.
- Karkat who catches him and makes fun of him lowkey but then starts to do it as well.
"YOU'RE FUCKING GROSS, I CAN'T BELIEVE I CAUGHT YOU SNATCHING THEIR UNDERWEAR LIKE SOME SHORT OF FUCKING INCEL GOBLIN."
"Okay I hear you but have you considered she tastes good?"
".....GIMME THAT."
- Dave is the kind of bf to ask if you wanna hold his dick while he pisses, look me in the eyes and tell me I'm wrong.
- Karkat is like "why are my matesprits fucking weirdos, How did i end up here. Is. this some weird human courtship what the fuck is this."
- They compete on who can make you cum first but jokes on them you make them both finish fast. So they just lay there in embarrassment
- They're both switches but you're mainly the bottom, they love to put you between them and go to town, usually kissing each other while your face is pressed up against Karkat's chest and you're babbling about how you're full.
- You'll ride them occasionally but they have to take over bc your thighs are straining and your whines get to them to where they take back over.
- Dave likes taking you from behind so you can't see his expressions and how red he gets and Karkat is a romantic fuck so he likes watching you AND Dave so he always wants to be facing you both.
- Both of them biting into your neck on different sides when they cum do everyone knows you're theirs, Karkat draws blood and laps it up.
- They're both into ur thighs
Dave likes to have your legs wrapped around his head, the pressure of you is just so calming and he wil gladly stay there and die happy if he can shove his face into your tummy.
- Karkat likes to bite them, he is fucking insatiable dude he is constantly marking you, making sure you smell like them, you make his troll brain go feral. He bites your thighs and bites Dave's chest, making sure they're deep enough to last.
- Oughhh matching rings/bracelets to show yall are each others
-Red for dave, gray for karkat, and black for you <33
Dave has gray and black, Karkats red and black and you red and gray so everyone's represented, even when you're apart, there are traces of you on one another.

Dave isnât very particular about it because whatâs sexy about it for him is the evidence of you having worn something.
This guy is huffing the pillows you and Karkat have been sleeping on when heâs alone in the bed.
Heâs wearing your shirts to sleep when youâre gone.
Heâs stealing your underwear and keeping it in his pocket.
Omgggg who said thatttttttt?
Heâs so normal, I donât even know what youâre talking about.
Karkat, on the other hand, would die on the spot if he saw you or Dave in something lacey.
Dave isnât inclined to wear lingerie very often.
Itâs itchy and just not comfortable for him, especially if heâs supposed to be getting in the mood.
He might try it out when heâs alone, but itâs harder for him in front of the two of you.
So you might have to take one for the team here.
Karkat just thinks that youâre so attractive.
Being scantily-clad is like the cherry on top of an already beautiful and expertly crafted cake.
They are both freaks who yearn for the taste of their partners.
They would fight over who gets to put their mouth on you first after theyâve both fucked you.Â
Speaking of which, they would like to fuck you at the same time if you could take it.
Filling you up while getting to feel their dicks rubbing against each other at the same time is like crack to them.
But if you would prefer to dom, nobody is opposed to that at all.
Karkat would also like you and Dave to fuck his nook simultaneously for what itâs worth.
Karkat is also into having his fingers sucked on.
Like, itâs unreasonable how much that turns him on.
He thinks itâs so cute how your entire body relaxes as you focus on fulfilling his request.
Plus, he can see your face really well that way which is always a bonus for him.
And then getting to use your spit to prepare either himself, you, or Dave makes him feel feral.
You and Karkat would have to be pretty aware of Dave in bed.
He does not want to be the center of attention and would much rather be put to use for somebody else.
Which is exactly the reason why the two of you are always checking on him and trying to do the things that make him feel good, too.
Especially because he might not always vocalize his needs.
Both of them are usually very sensual in bed.
They like to take a lot of time working up to it, kissing and caressing and grinding against each other.
Thereâs a lot of build up with them.
The actual sex isnât the funnest part for them, itâs the intimacy for sure.
Hand-holding, praises, and kisses are all going on during the act, too, not just as foreplay.
But the part where the three of you are touching each other and trying to pretend like you arenât being controlled by burning desire is a thrill like no other.
It was finally Saturday morning, the anticipation for today had been killing me. After we all met up for the first time at lunch, Dave took it upon himself to make a group chat for him, Karkat and I called âSigma Meeting Roomâ which Karkat hated. No matter how many times he tried changing the name, Dave would change it right back.Â
We talked back and forth about specifics of our hangout like my address and what weâd be eating, turns out that pizza was absolutely off the table. I guess with the jobs they have, itâs only natural youâd get a bit sick of it. So we decided weâd get Chinese takeout delivered to us.Â
I had woken up pretty late, the alarm clock on my bed reading 12:26 though I wasnât really worried because they shouldnât have been coming until two. That wouldâve given me more than enough time to clean up a bit and set things up for us to do.
I had just finished brushing my teeth when I heard the doorbell ring.Â
âComing!âÂ
I put my toothbrush away and walked out the bathroom while whoever was outside took it upon themselves to start ringing it repeatedly.Â
âI SAID IM FUCKING COMING!?â I yelled before stomping to the door and yanking it open.Â
To my surprise there stood Dave, a bookbag on his back and a plastic bag which appeared to be filled with some snacks. The plastic bag was a bit see-through so I could notice chips and ice cream among other things inside.
âUh- hey? What are you doing here so soon? Itâs only 12:30?â I ask but step to the side, letting him in.
âOh yeah, hope you donât mind me coming early. Me and my bro uh, got into a little.. disagreement of sorts. Just wanted to get out the apartment ASAP.â He says as he goes to the living room, setting his stuff down.Â
âOh was it a.. nasty argument..?â I ask, unsure if heâs doing alright or not.Â
âNot particularly. My broâs just a complicated guy. I try not to let that shit get to me.â He shrugs as he takes a seat on the couch.
âWhat do you mean by âthat shitâ exactly?â I wonder as I sit next to him. Dave gets visibly uncomfortable as if he wasnât expecting me to ask for the details.
âUh- yâknow like.. yâknow?âÂ
âNo I donât know?â
âItâs kinda complicated- I know you donât really wanna hear it-â
âIâm fine with listening really! If youâre open to talking about it, that is. If you need someone to just vent to or something I donât mind.âÂ
Dave looks to me then averts his gaze just as quickly, in his mind heâs considering if he should or not. Talking about his own feelings on serious topics is a bit foreign to him and while we arenât super close yet, Dave is the kinda guy whoâs emotions and thoughts just end up spilling out his mouth anyways eventually after trying to bottle them up for so long.Â
Plus this is already something that's leaving a heavy pit in his stomach, he feels like if he doesnât let it out now, itâll stay weighing on his mind and he wonât be able to enjoy himself later.Â
âItâs like- wellâŚâ he trails off as he tries to find the words. âNot to like- trauma dump or whatever,â âWell I mean I did ask,â â Right , um, our dad uh, wasnât really a good guy right? I think.. No, I know he left long lasting effects on us but in.. different ways. With Dirk heâs so⌠quiet and mysterious 24 fuckinâ 7. Heâll yap your ear off and say nothing all at the same time. Like bro loves grilling up nothing burgers like itâs his passion. Itâs.. irritating because I want him to like,â his hands move as he speaks, somewhat trying to demonstrate what he means, â come to me if somethingâs bothering him. I donât want him to just sit in a pit of his issues because he feels heâs âless of a manâ for having emotions? I mean heâs my brother! I can tell when heâs normal Dirk weird or weird Dirk weird. But when I try to talk to him about it, he always shrugs me off saying shit like â Itâs not a big deal â or â Youâre too young to understand â like youâre only 3 years older than me douchebag!?â Dave exasperates before sighing and running a hand through his hair before starting to rub at his eyes under the shades.Â
âPlus I⌠want someone I can talk to too.. if somethingâs bothering me. But because of him I sort of.. feel like Iâm wrong for wanting that..â he mutters. He peaks at me from the corner of his eye, trying to gauge my reaction.Â
âHmmmâŚâ
âUgh- I said so much. Sorry thatâs fucking embarrassing just pretend I didnât-â
âI donât think youâre wrong for wanting someone to talk to when youâre going through shit.â I cut him off before he can start to freak out more.Â
âI mean, humans are social beings, we need communities nâ all that. Even if your bro mightâve closed off his emotional communication station, mine is open anytime you need to chat.â I smile and give him a reassuring pat on the shoulder before heading to the fridge to put away the ice cream and other drinks he brought with him. Heâs quiet as he sits on the couch, his hands rub at his cheeks as he tries to fight off the heat rising from his neck.Â
âThanks.â He mutters. âBut yeah, thatâs the basics of it. I try to get my edgy bro to be more open and then he gets mad that I'm âprying on himâ or whatever." Dave says from the couch as I walk back.
"Well," I start as I flop down next to him, "If you want him to be more open then maybe you should start? I mean, I don't know your bro but maybe he'll get more used to the idea if you take the first step? It doesn't have to be anything too deep or personal- just something that can help build the foundation for actually being upfront with his feelings yâknow?" I look at him to see now he takes my advice on the situation. He leans back, arms spread and resting on the top part of the couch as he thinks to himself. Luckily for me, heâs so wrapped in his own thoughts he doesnât notice me staring at him. Really, I should be more embarrassed about how Iâm shamelessly checking him out but Iâm more concerned with taking in the style of his hair and how it frames his face, shape of his jawline, the freckles and blemishes that cover his skin, the miscellaneous cuts and scars scattered about. He swallows and my eyes trail the movement of his adamâs apple as he does, looking lower to peek at the skin of his collarbones that can slightly be seen through the gap of the collar of his baggy shirt. The freckles seem to cover his chest too. How far down do they go? Do they die down on the parts of skin that donât get much sun? I want to see it. I want to see him. Will he let me see?Â
âAh ahem, â He clears his throat and looks at me through the corner of his eye.
Shit. Caught red-handed.
He looks a bit off to the side, his cheeks heating up. âU-uh yeah that sounds like a good start. Iâll try it out.â His voice cracks as he brings his arms back down, one reaching up to scratch a nonexistent itch on his neck and the other fidgeting with the end of his shirt. He looks embarrassed and almost like heâs trying to cover up from my intense gaze.Â
God. Iâm such a freak. Can I be fucking normal? Tweaking over a peak of collarbones? Holy shit youâd think Iâm an old geezer from the 1800âs seeing a sliver of skin from a ladyâs ankle or something- GET A GRIP! I yell to myself as I get up. âUh, you said youâd be bringing your Xbox right? We can uh plug it in right now?â I said awkwardly trying to change the weird mood my creepiness brought out. âH-huh? Oh! Y-yeah right..â He mumbles as he reaches into his backpack, taking it out.
âSo you had it in your backpack huh? I was wondering what was in there. Last Iâd seen, it practically floated down when you tossed it to the ground when we ate together.â I joked as he got up to plug it all in.Â
âWell yeah, canât just walk around with a Xbox in my arms, thatâs like asking to be mugged.â His voice strained as he leant to reach behind the TV stand to plug the console to the power outlet.Â
âTrueâŚâ I muttered before taking my phone out of my pocket. âIâm gonna text Karkat and see if he can come earlier so itâs not just us.. By ourselves.. For an hour..â
â..rightâ
Karkat save us. Please save us from just being stuck on our own. Â

âOkayyyyy heâs on his way.â I say looking up from my phone and seeing him now sorting through the games he brought with him.
âAlright. I brought a couple multiplayer games with me. Any particular preferences?â Dave asks as he spreads them out on the living room table.
âHmmmâŚâ
âOh look, Tony Hawk Pro Skater. An oldie but a classic.â He waves the case in my face.
âPro Skater? Isnât that just the shitty skating game filled with bugs?â
âHey! Being a shitty skating game filled with bugs is what gives it its charm.â He snickers before tossing it back on the table.Â
âYou brought GTA?â
âDo ya wanna play that?â
âYeah Iâd like to but you canât really play multiplayer with just one TV.â
âOh damn, right.â He takes the game and tosses it back into his backpack.
âHow about Super Smash Bros?â I ask, lifting it up from the table.
âSure. We could probably play a round or two before Kat gets here. FYI Iâm totally gonna kick your ass, just letting ya know before you get to whining.â Dave arrogantly says before handing me a controller and sitting on the couch.Â
âWell FYI, Iâm not above using cheap tricks like kicking you in the ribs to win...âÂ
âOkay, chill, is it ever that serious?â
â Itâs always that serious..â
-----------
Karkat stood in front of the door checking one last time to make sure he was at the right apartment before knocking.
...
No answer?
He knocked again.
...
Nothing.
Okay now he was starting to get pissed off.
He raised his fist ready to start pounding on the door when it swung open to reveal Dave who was out of breath, red in the face from exasperation, his glasses crooked and hair a mess.
â.. What the hell went on?âÂ
âI was winning at smash 4-0 and they got pissed and started wrestling me bro Iâm so serious I thought I was gonna die.â Dave explained as he stepped to the side letting Karkat in.
âOh my god youâre so dramatic. Just say youâre weak as shit man.â I said as I walked to the doorway to greet Karkat.
âYou look pathetic, honestly..â Karkat muttered as he fixed Daveâs glasses for him nonchalantly and patted down a few stray hairs before turning to me. âSince you rushed me I brought my top 5 and Iâll decide which ones weâll actually watch here.â Karkat says holding up a bag filled with some DVDs.Â
âWell, when you put 'em on, just know Iâm gonna be knocked out having a nap thanks to those movies taking me on an all expenses paid trip to snoozeville.â Dave sighed as we all headed to the living room.
âWhatever Dave I couldnât give less of a fuck about your complaining even if I had an abundance of fucks ready to give away. Iâm talking warehouse level amounts of fucks that come in BUNDLES. ON SALE. And I still wouldnât give any to you.â Karkat sat on the couch, me on his left, Dave on his right.
âBesides, (Y/n) said I can bring whatever I want and since itâs their house thatâs all that matters right?â He turns to me before his eyes widen, coming to a sudden realization. He looks me up and down.
âUhh.. what?â I ask, confused by the sudden silence from him.
âAre you wearing my clothes?â Karkat asks.
âHuh?â I look down and lo and behold, heâs right. âOh yeah! Iâve kinda been using them as pajamas for a while, theyâre pretty comfy. I know I already thanked you but seriously thanks. You really saved my ass. From being exposed that is.â I laugh patting his back. âBut if weâre being honest, I doubt Iâm ever gonna give these back. If you want I could give you some of my clothes or somethinââ I say.
âOh. Huh. Ok.â is all Karkat says before going to sort through his DVDs. Even with him looking away from me, I can see the tips of his ears turning red. What I donât see is Dave shooting Karkat a look, wiggling his eyebrows only for Karkat to stomp on his foot with an annoyed huff.Â
âOW, DICK!â Dave yells.Â
âHuh?âÂ
âItâs nothing, don't worry about it.â Karkat grumbles trying to will away the intensifying blush on his cheeks. Â
â..I think Iâm gonna put together the cinnamon rolls so we can have them as a little snack before we order food later.â I say as I get up.
âA little snack? Wouldnât that be more like desert?â Dave asks
âYeah.â
âSo shouldnât you make them later?â
âI want them now .â I say and head to the fridge so I can pull out the cans of dough.
âDo you want help?â Karkat asks from the couch.
âNo itâs alright. Besides I feel like if i let you guys make 'em theyâre gonna turn out fugly as fuck.â
âWHAT!!â
âHey man, not cool.â
âWhatevs!â I say back before popping open a can.

Pairings: Dirk Strider x Reader (Mostly platonic / One sided)
Warnings: Mentions of suicide, Angst, Homestuck Epilogues plot
Word Count: 10.4k
Summary: After not hearing from your best friend Dirk for a while, you decide to go check in on him. For some reason, you feel like this isn't going to be the same feels-jam talk you two normally have. The air is different. Something is happening.
A/N: Okay first off, please know that this story is based directly on the plot of the Homestuck Epilogues. Itâs supposed to be right before the Candy/Meat timelines split and take place. I know itâs literally in the title, but just to be safe bc I know how some people feel about it. Secondly, I project a lot to write my fics so the backstory about Y/Ns feelings for Karkat and Dave are very self-indulged. Accidentally became kinda important to the plot. My bad. Thirdly, please forgive me if Dirk seems out of character at all. This is just how I felt he wouldâve been before he became like the ultimate Dirk or whatever tf goes on in the epilogues đ. Anyways. Again, tread lightly if heavy topics like suicide are triggering for you. It gets kind of intense. I just felt like this boy needed some comforting when I was reading all those chapters. OKAY IM DONE NOW. Enjoy!!!
âDIRK!â your voice shouts pointlessly at the closed metal door in front of you, for the umpteenth time. Youâre banging at the door unapologetically, like you have no shame, which you donât at this point. Not when it came to your best friend, and trying to get him out of his self-inflicted depressive/dissociative episodes.Â
This episode in particular had been especially hard to get him out of. Dirk had a habit of shutting his friends out when he got to feeling a certain way, and not even letting them in when they came to check on him in person. He seemed to have a soft spot for certain people, but even they couldnât always get through to him. You included, as well as Jake, Jane, Roxy, and Dave. But, usually you were more invasive and better at tearing his walls down when he built them up. The amount of times you pried your way into listening to a Jake or self-villainizing related rant from Dirk, WILLINGLY, was impressive at this point. Lets be real, Dirk doesnât open up about his feelings on the usual. All raw and feels-jam like, like your other friends do.Â
In summary though, his little shut-in episodes did little to keep you out of his life.
However, he hasnât been answering your messages for weeks, actually maybe a month now. You havenât been good at keeping track at this point. He doesnât ever ignore everyone for this long, especially you. Now that youâre here, and heâs not answering the door, itâs honestly starting to worry you. What could he be doing??? Is he even home? Thereâs no way he could beâŚ..
Nah.Â
Heâs just in there being all dreary right now, you know it.
âDIRK OPEN THE DAMN DOOR OR ILL FIND A WAY IN. YOU KNOW I WILL!â You continue banging on heavy metal. You can hear it echo into the chamber behind it, assumingely empty unless Dirk is a literal fucking dickhead. Which he is. But you give him the benefit of the doubt. Looks like youâll have to find a way in.Â
This is really annoying. More than usual. Of course, you donât ever mind putting this much effort into Dirk. Heâs someone you care about very much, so this type of thing just works like clockwork for you. You have a desire to be there for Dirk in a way you feel he needs someone to be. Itâs probably inconvenient for him most times, but you try to ignore that intrusive thought.Â
Right now though, this is especially annoying because youâve been trying to contact Dirk for weeks about your own personal issues. Itâs always a back and forth of issue-sharing with you two, as friendships should be. But honestly, your life isnât super eventful, not as much as Dirks somehow. So, you donât usually have all that much to rant about. Now, the one time your life feels like itâs going to shit and you REALLY need him, he decides to swan dive straight into a pool of âfuck everyone, especially (y/n)â and dissolve into it like a damn spoonful of salt.
That analogy was awful, you canât even come up with clever things anymore, your head is so disoriented. You launch up into the air with little to no grace at all, so fast that you forgot about the metal hood hovering over the front of the studio and smash your head right into it. Fucking OW.Â
Youâre silent for a moment, absorbing the pain like when you stub your toe and you just stand in shock for a minute straight. Then, after a due moment of silence, you let out a loud aggravated groan of pain and annoyance.Â
âUUUUAGGHHHHUGHH!!!â
Yeah thatâs basically how it would be spelt out, I guess.Â
Using all the annoyed force your body can muster, god powers and all, you punch through the orange-tinted window in front of you. Not physically, with your hands, but with a sheer force wave of strength you just pushed out upon throwing your fists out and down in front of you as you yelled out. The window cracks and shatters, the whole action being very anime-like.Â
Wow.
That was kinda a lot. Maybe chill out for a second? I mean, youâve been known to do some pretty crazy and powerful stuff back in your Sburb days, fighting enemies and all. But there was no reason to unleash that on Dirks poor window. You know heâs gonna have to reinstall that now, and it probably wonât be of glass this time.
Nonetheless, you float inside, accidentally cutting yourself on a shard still intact in the window frame. You hiss a little at the cut, but it doesnât stop you. Youâre back to being set on finding Dirk.Â
It doesnât take long to find him, of course. You enter the largest room in his studio down on the first floor, down a long hallway, basically the center of his place. This is where he keeps most of his materials and works. It could basically be a big high-ceiling living room, and youâre pretty sure it was once decorated like one, but now itâs covered in metal, tools, junk, etc. You find him drilling away at whateverâs in front of him, back turned to you.Â
You casually float down from the balcony above, most of the frantic anger from earlier out of your system now that youâve found him. And heâs okay.
âYo. Did you hear me banging at the door or are you deaf now?â You say, half joking, but also a little genuinely.
He doesnât look at you when he responds, ever focused on his work. He stops drilling to be able to talk at normal volume, and to switch to another tool. âOf course I did. Youâre quite loud, I donât know if you noticed.âÂ
You roll your eyes. âOh, okay. Just wanted to confirm you are as much of an asshole as I assumed you were.â Youâre still hovering an inch above the ground as you glide over to face the front of him.
âOh please, youâve been very aware of my asshole-ness long before you even met me face to face.âÂ
You laugh a little at this. Itâs true, in a way. Even before you knew this timelines version of Dirk, Dave would always rant to you about his Bro. So you assumed he would be an asshole way before you even really met who youâre looking at right now.Â
âYouâre right. But how do you know that by âassumedâ, I meant that in recent tense and not one that dated back to my pre-teen years?â You shoot back.
You know he would usually like your comment, but he doesnât laugh or react much at all.
You frown, because heâd normally have a witty comeback to a stupid question like that. But the conversation seems to have cut off there, when he doesnât reply for a while and continues operating. It stays like this for a bit, slightly-uncomfortable silence as you stare down at him and he doesnât look back. You finally slump down, into a criss-cross sitting position in front of him while he works. You stay this way, the only sound echoing the room being made from the burning metal, and you wait for him to be done with this piece before you nudge into his personal life. Itâs the respectful thing to do, you know how serious he is about his mechanic works. Whatever heâs doing is probably of some type of importance.
You watch him carefully use a⌠a uhâŚ. Damn what is that thing called? That little fire-like tool thatâs used for welding? A welder? I donât know and I canât be fucked to search the internet for it. You know what I mean. Heâs sweating just slightly on his freckle-spotted arms from the heat, and you try not to linger on his mussels for too long as you examine him right now. Heâs wearing his wielding mask, unfortunately, so you canât see his face. The eye part is shaped like his shades, and you canât imagine how thatâs practical at all. What a dork. But not like John Egbert adorable-like dork. Dirks a dork in a cool admirable way. Itâs hard to explain.Â
Another while goes by like this, shrouded in a more comfortable silence this time. You donât look at him the entire time you wait, eventually you find yourself staring off into hallway behind him, chin in your hands.Â
If you (the reader) havenât picked it up by now, you obviously have a thing for Dirk. But you try not to acknowledge it most of the time, and youâre pretty sure no one knows about it. It kinda conflicts with your feelings youâve had for Dave since you met him, and your feelings for Karkat you developed not long after spending time together on the meteor. Itâd be weird to like Dave and his bro right? This bro, not his actual timeline bro obviously. Yeah, itâd be strange. You must have a thing for the Striders, you guess. But you try to push it into the back of your mind as often as possible. Dirks just your good friend, heâll always be a friend to you. You want to be there for him because you care in a PLATONIC way. Of course. Even if you did acknowledge these feelings and act on them, heâd most definitely turn you down for various reasons. You know him too well. This is how the last 7 years have panned out, and it was only a few years ago that you even came to acknowledge your feelings that I just said weâre choosing not to acknowledge.Â
Moving on.
âIâm assuming you broke one of my windows to get in. Do I have to go and fix that now?â He says, toneless. You cant even tell if heâs really upset.
âHowâd you know?â You ask innocently.
âAside from it being the most obvious way of breaking in besides picking my lock, which would be impossible. Remember when I said youâre loud?âÂ
You giggle a little. Yeah you guess theres no way he couldnât have heard you, even though it was up on the second floor, down the hall. âOkay yeah, I totally busted your window, dude. Sorry about that. It was a mistake honestly, but you kinda deserved it for blatantly ignoring me!âÂ
âI wasnât ignoring you, I was just busy.â
âDirk. Busy with what? You havenât answered me in like a month.â The conversation suddenly gets pretty confrontational without you meaning to make it so.
âI havenât? Doesnât feel like itâs been that long.âÂ
âWell it has.â You cross your arms, looking up at him âI really needed to talk to you! And I was really worried.âÂ
âWhy would you be worried?âÂ
You frown at this, again. Youâre not exactly sure what you were worried about. There were some specific worries that you wouldnât say to him out loud, that come with having any friend as depressed as Dirk tends to be. They didnât have to make sense, but they were always at the back of your mind.
âI donât know. I just worry when you donât answer for a while. Youâve never gone that long without texting me or calling me back.â
At this very real statement, Dirk doesnât respond. He probably doesnât know how to at first. Then, he pulls off his helmet, revealing his pretty face to you once again. You almost let out a sigh of relief. You just really love to look at this guy. His shades are on still, having worn them under the mask like a DORK.Â
âWell, Iâm totally fine so thereâs nothing to worry about. Okay?â This is his best attempt at comforting you right now. Youâre still not impressed.Â
âI can see that now. But it wouldâve been nice to know like a week or two ago.â You would look away to reinforce that youâre upset, but you canât stop looking at him, while heâs assumingely making eye contact with you behind his shades. Youâre trying your hardest to push back thoughts again.
He finally looks away and pushes himself up to stand, walking over to the pile of metal on the couch. âHey donât go getting all sentimental with me now. Starting to sound like Jake.â His voice feels off from how he normally talks, like heâs hollowly trying to say something he thinks he would say. âHeâs actually been breathing down my neck all week, Iâve thought about blocking him at this point.â
You roll your eyes x2 combo. That last sentence definitely sounded like him, itâs one youâve heard a million times. He never does it. This is good though, you can segway this into getting him to open up.Â
âJake, huh? Youâre still talking to him? Didnât you say youâd cut him off like- a million cut-offs ago?âÂ
âYeah.â He picks the piece of metal up off the couch, knocking a few pieces next to it over onto the floor. âBut I could never actually cut him off completely, you know that. With all the arrangements we have and whatever. I just meant for a little while so maybe I could get a fucking second to breathe.â
You nod. Fair enough, you guess. You still think itâs funny how much the tables have turned with them. Since Dirk used to tell you how he was the clingy one back when Sburb was still active. âHow come heâs still bothering you so much? I thought he had gotten pretty distant from you in an attempt to get over you or something?âÂ
âI mean yeah he was like that, but lately our showâs been getting even more popular. Plus, with Janeâs upcoming announcement about the presidency, Iâve been trying to add more elements to amp up his popularity.â
You didnât even think you could make Jake anymore popular than he already was on earth C, and you already knew of Janes presidency plan thing. Dirk told you a while ago, and youâve tried so. SO hard not to tell Dave and Karkat yet, per Dirks request. âSo why does this make him bother you more?â
âI made him pretty ambitious about the new season. Heâs got all these ideas and plans heâs been shooting at me. Havenât been responding obviously, which makes him bug me more.â
âYeah, well, thatâs what happens when you donât talk to your friends for long periods of time, Dirk. The messages start to pile up. I wouldnât call that âbuggingâ. Heâs probably been messaging you a normal amount, and youâre just behind on responding.âÂ
âNo no, youâre not friends with Jake like I am. Trust me. He has been giving an absolute fucking earful to me in text. Assuming there was an ear actually listening, and a mouth replying.â
âYouâre not even reading the messages?â
âNo.â
âWhat if itâs important?â
âI would know if it was anything that important, trust me.â
You sigh and lean back on your hands. Your arm stings a little and you suddenly remember the cut on your shoulder that you never tended to. Dirk didnât even notice. Something inside you feels disappointed for some reason. âYouâre really full of yourself, yknow that?â
âYeah, I know.â His response is quick, without hesitation. You know he does. He self-loathes about it at least once every time you guys talk.
âI just wish youâd at least shoot me a text before you disappear for weeks being like âHey! just so you know, Iâm about to fuck off to not exist for a while! Donât worry im not dead or anything!ââ
âIâll make sure to do that next time.â He says sarcastically, coming back over to where he was sitting to add the new piece of metal to his project.Â
You groan, it almost feels like a growl. That makes you think about Jade. You groan again. âCan you just tell me whatâs going on? This obviously isnât like your other episodes which donât really happen for more than maybe like a week at a time.âÂ
âWeâre calling them âepisodesâ now?â He asks, looking over at you, but still keeping his hands busy. You swear you can see him smirk a little.Â
âWell, thatâs what I call them. Sorry. Thatâs probably rude, I just donât know how else to describe when you get like this.â
âLike what?â
âReclusive? Distant? Iâm assuming you havenât been in contact with anyone this whole time.âÂ
âYeah, I guess. Itâs not a big deal though, you guys all have lives to be living, I donât have to be out there all the time.â
âOut there? Dirk, sometimes I just want to talk to my friend. You can stay all shut in your studio, but the least you could do is answer me via text???âÂ
Heâs back at work, mask down, attention to his project now. But you werenât done yet.
âDirk.â
He doesnât answer. Heâs avoiding the conversation so you donât investigate further. Again, this is clockwork.Â
âDirk.â You insist again, standing up now.Â
The cut on your shoulder is bleeding down the side of your arm now. âCan you please just tell me whatâs wrong this time. Even if thereâs nothing going on, you know that just talking it out DOES actually make you feel better. And I LIKE listening to you talk.â
He flinches a little at this, stoping his wielding for a second, but not any longer. He goes back to ignoring you.
You sigh. This is probably going to take a while. You start to walk down the hall towards the bathroom to find a bandaid and clean up the blood.Â
When youâre far enough away, Dirk looks back in your direction, thinking that maybe you were leaving. A twinge of guilt flickers quickly in him, but he ignores it again and turns back to his project.
When you come back, you feel a bit refreshed. You had time to clear your head slightly. You decided that if heâs going to ignore you, youâre just going to wait until he HAS to talk to you. He canât let it be silent forever, and youâre not leaving until he gets something out. Not like youâve got anything better to do.
You move past him silently and over to what youâre pretty sure is a nice recliner chair, under all the cloth and metal. You start taking the metal off and placing it aside. This catches his attention, and he almost asks what the hell youâre doing, until he realizes what the hell youâre doing, and decides itâs not worth starting up a conversation again.Â
Once all the metals shards are off the chair, you dust it off with your hands and take a seat. You just stare at him for a bit. When that soon gets boring, you lean back into the chair with a sigh, closing your eyes. Maybe youâll take a nap.
Itâs silent (aside from the wielding) for so long that you really do start falling into sleep. The sounds of him working were lulling you into relaxation for some odd reason. You can feel your consciousness just about to be pulled from under you when-
âSo⌠what was it you needed to talk to me about?â Dirk asks from across the room. You hadnât noticed he stopped working for a bit. The sound of his voice snapped your eyes open for a moment, but when you see heâs not even looking at you, you go right back to closing them.
âI just needed to rant about some stuff, maybe get some advice. But I donât really think I should be having that conversation with you right now. It seems like you probably got your own stuff to sort out.âÂ
Dirk shrugs, but you canât see anyways. âNot really. I mean, kind of. But you came here to see me, you might as well tell me instead of leaving this awkward silence while I work.âÂ
âI didnât think it was awkward. But I didnât come here to rant to you, I came here because I was worried.â
âOkay, sure, whatever. But you might as well tell me now that youâre here. I donât mind.âÂ
You sigh. Should you really start this conversation? Would it be selfish to dump all your bullshit on your friend when heâs clearly going through it, even though he wonât talk about it? But he is asking for it at this point. You didnât even bring it up.Â
âWell?â Heâs looking over at you when you open your eyes again. How long has he been looking?
You sigh again. âAlright⌠Iâll try not to drag it out too much.â
âAre you sure youâre capable of that type of self control?â He asks sarcastically.
âOh, shut up.â you say, but youâre smiling. This man and his smartass. âAlright, well-âÂ
And your rant begins. Iâll explain what the rant is about because I donât want to have to type ours and dirks every action out throughout the whole length of this long conversation. You can just assume heâs listening intently, because he is, for the most part.
Overall, life on Earth C hasnât really been all that great for anyone as of lately, thatâs a given. Itâs perfect here, sure, but perfect can only be perfect for so long, before it gets extremely boring. This is amplified x1000000 when you add in the fact that most of you are immortal. Forever is a long long time. However, on a more personal level, thereâs a lot going on.
First of all, youâve lived with Dave and Karkat since you got here. The three of you were best buddies on the meteor together, and decided to stick together after, even despite plenty of money to get your own places. You feel you kind of dug yourself into a hole with this one. Because while living with your best friends is so fun, youâre also not an idiot. You and everyone else on the planet can see the thing Karkat and Dave have for each other. And the fact that you have a crush on both of them, makes this not only awkward, but also painful. This whole situation isnât new though. In fact, Dirks heard an earful about it for several years. The first year or so of living with them was great, then it backfired. You took it upon yourself to go on a lot of trips, some with Jade and Jake, some alone. You started getting into pottery and went around selling pieces, random art experiments. You tried to convince your two antisocial roomates to go sometimes, but youâre kinda glad they didnât. You probably needed the distance. Eventually you moved out, only about a little over a year ago. You felt almost guilty, like your presence was keeping the two of them from being together (That definitely wasnât it though, as Dirk reassures you. Theyâre both just dense and stubborn.)Â
For the past year youâve struggled with separation issues. Everyone knows you always liked to be with someone all the time. Though your trips alone were freeing and refreshing, you enjoyed the feeling of coming home to someone, or two someones. It hurt, spending the nights in your big empty home, lovely as it was. You had people over plenty, but it was always the nighttime when everyone left that got to you. You developed insomnia, dark circles under your eyes that wonât go away. This isnât really new news either, but newer than the last.Â
The CURRENT issue at hand, now that we have background story, is where Jade comes into the mix. Jade is a lovely girl, and you love her to death. The two of you hang out on many occasions, though you may not be as close with her as with others. You enjoyed her energy and attitude, it was contagious. But lately, sheâs been⌠putting herself very closely into Dave and Karkats lives. Not that she wasnât already around them a lot, she definitely was over pretty often. But it seems like ever since you left, sheâs been there basically 24/7, like she lives there now. Not only that, but the boys have told you how sheâs been making uncomfortable advances towards them, and isnât hiding how she would like to be with the both of them seriously. Now⌠itâs not necessarily that youâre jealous. (Dirk gets a kick out at this. And by a kick I mean letting out a snort and ALMOST breaking into a chuckle, to your momentary annoyance.) But itâs especially frustrating for many reasons. Putting aside the obvious reason that you have the same feelings for them as she does. Sheâs basically ruining everything you gave up to try and help DaveKat happen. You moved yourself out of the equation to make room for maybe some progress, and she moved right in after you. They both love Jade as a friend, but you can tell that her advances make them uneasy just from the couple times youâve witnessed it. Youâre afraid sheâll ruin it for them.Â
âSo, youâre definitely not jealous?â Dirk asks, obviously being sarcastic.Â
âOf course I am. I wonât deny it. Iâm just saying itâs not the ONLY reason Iâm upset about it.â You respond defensively.
âOkay. I mean, that makes sense. But I think youâre mostly just upset with yourself.â
Youâre open your mouth to retort, but you stay quiet for a moment. ââŚYou think?â
âYeah. To me, it sounds like youâre mad at yourself because leaving them caused you to self sabotage into a life youâre not satisfied with. And now Jade is over there going after what she wants and youâre upset you couldnât bring yourself to do the same.â
Youâre a little offended by the accuracy of his blunt words. There are some things you need to defend though. âOkay well, maybe youâre somewhat right-â
âSomewhat?â
â-BUT, I only didnât go for it because I knew they didnât feel the same, and I didnât wanna ruin our friendship. Or worse, their relationship.â
âHow do you know they didnât feel the same?â
âŚâŚ
How did you know?
âWell⌠I just thought it was pretty obvious. They just donât act with me how they act with each other. You can just like⌠feel the different energy, I guess.âÂ
âBut how would you know for sure if you never even went for it?â
Silence again.Â
ââŚI donât knowâŚâ you shuffle awkwardly in the chair, looking down at your lap and playing with your hands. ââŚSo you think I shouldâve done what Jade is doing?â
âOh, definitely not.â He responds almost immediately. âSheâs definitely gonna fuck their shit up.â
Your head shoots up at this, shocked. âWHAT?! But you were just saying that I should have gone for it!â
âYes. But honestly I think you would have gone about it in a less uncomfortable way. And even if they did turn you down, or like- weirdly wiggle out of the situation like they do. Then at least youâd have a straight answer. But you didnât ever bother trying at all.â
âI-â
â-AND furthermore, I think that if you had gotten a straight answer, it wouldâve given you the closure you need, and you wouldnât have to keep trying like Jade seems to be set on doing.â
It hits you now. You donât know why youâve never thought about it like this. You always just assumed their feelings. Even if you had confessed to them one time, you couldâve gotten that closure you didnât realize you needed. Now itâs too late. Theyâve already got too much tension on their relationship, adding you in the mix would be chaos. This is suddenly very troubling, youâre starting to get into a depressed state of mind again. The one youâve been stuck in for weeks, as well as Dirk probably has for reasons still unknown.Â
âIâŚ.â You relax your hands in your lap, and lean back to look up at the ceiling. âYouâre right. I should have at least tried.â
âDidnât I tell you to a ton of times before? I always thought that a sincere heartfelt confession from you might actually help push their relationship forward, even if they didnât reciprocate.âÂ
âYeah⌠I just never wanted to. I was so sure theyâd be repulsed at the idea.â
âOuch. Repulsed? Thatâs a new word for the situation.â
âYeah, I guess I always felt like that deep down though. I mean, Karkats super harsh and distant. And Daveâs super aloof and distant. So, being vulnerable about your feelings for them just feels⌠extra vulnerable.â
âYeah. It definitely wouldnât be an easy relationship to navigate. Honestly maybe you did yourself a favor.â
You sigh at this. It certainly doesnât feel that way.Â
It goes silent again for a little bit, but this time neither of you find any discomfort in it. Dirks been working still, but doing something more quiet now. Connecting wires or something probably. Youâre not really sure what it is he does.Â
You remember something he said to you several sentences ago.
âAlso⌠earlier you said⌠that I caused a life that Iâm unhappy withâŚâ you speak, sounding more dejected that you have today.
âMhm.â
âWell. I donât think thatâs true.â
âNo?â
âNo, not really. I mean, yeah it definitely caused me some additional problems, sure. But DirkâŚâ you look down to make eye contact with him. He stops to look back at you, from behind the shades. Heâs resting his arms on his knees, face stoic, fully listening.Â
âI donât think⌠Iâve been happy with my life.. in a long time.â
The sentence hits Dirk harder than maybe it shouldâve normally, almost as if breaking something down. His face finally changes, from just being a stone-cold expression, to a slight frown, his features relaxed. Itâs not an expression of pity, really. Heâs sympathizing.Â
Most everyone of the sburb kids probably feel this way. Things are just not as great as you might have though theyâd be at the beginning of starting an entirely new universe. Thereâs just this terrible lingering empty feeling, that no one really talks about out loud. But it feels different hearing it from you. You always tried to be a little optimistic. Youâve been unhappy many times, thatâs just normal human emotions. But youâve never expressed being unhappy⌠with your life as a whole? Or accidentally admitted that youâre also depressed.Â
The confession hits you hard as well for some reason, even though youâve known it as a fact for quite some time. Youâve never outwardly admitted it. Suddenly youâre feeling warm wet tears run down the sides of your cheeks. They surprise you. When did you start tearing up?
Now they wonât stop, despite your frantic hands that try to wipe each one away.Â
âSorry⌠I⌠didnât meant to get so emotional all of a sudden! Haha..â youâre sniffling a bit between your words, and trying to force a smile to make things less serious. Dirk just stares at you as you try to pull yourself together. âI just canât help.. but think like⌠wow! Iâm really going to live⌠potentially forever⌠and Iâm not even enjoying the beginning⌠whatâs 50 years from now gonna feel like? Whatâs 500 years gonna feel like? Will I even be me anymore at that point?â Youâre just rambling now. Youâve went so quick from a normal rant-sesh to such a wet sloppy mess (ew). Youâre no doubt embarrassed, and trying to talk in a casual manner that will maybe make you forget that youâre sobbing in front of your cool best friend or maybe crush, while he stares at you uncomfortably. Why did you even think coming here was a good idea? Youâre in no place to help him. You just needed him to help you. You are selfish.
âIm- Im sorry, Iâll stop.. just give me a sec-â youâre cut off suddenly. A distantly familiar feeling. Youâre quick to go from feeling alone and pathetic, to warm and secure, as youâre pulled into an embrace with Dirk Strider. These hugs are not something you get to feel often. You didnât even hear him walk over.Â
Youâre pulled out of your intrusive thoughts immediately. You feel safe, and comforted. In a way only heâs ever been able to make you feel. Despite all the bickering, and smart ass comments, you really loved Dirk. He always knew how to talk to you and handle you, with just enough care, even though sometimes you craved more. (Give a dog a bone, right?) But not because of the hug alone, no. Itâs whatâs about to come after this. This is it. The clock is moving, itâs in motion.
He pulls back only after heâs felt you settle down and go quiet. âI know how you feel. Youâre not alone, you know that.âÂ
You nod, too flustered to look him in the face, so you look to the side, staring at his funny little shoulder tattoo. âI feel guilty about it though. Earth C is so perfect. I should be really happy, shouldnât I?âÂ
âNah. Nothing is ever perfect. Even though we literally created Earth C, I wouldnât call it perfect. In fact, weâre probably about to get so fucking far from it.âÂ
You look at him and tilt your head. âWhat do you mean?âÂ
He pulls back again, standing up, turning to grab a chair sitting in the corner of the room. He carries it back over and sets it down in front of you, your eyes follow him the whole time. He sits on it the opposite way youâre supposed to, legs around the back of the chair, resting his arms on the top. The way a cool guy sits. You look at him, attentive. Ready for him to lay it on you.Â
âI just seriously doubt that anything thatâs about to happen will turn out very good. Our years for living a ânormalâ life are already pretty much past at this point.âÂ
Okay, now youâre really confused. âDirk youâre not making any sense. Whatâs going to happen thatâs so bad?âÂ
He looks at you for a moment. He definitely isnât intending on sharing with you any information of any importance, but you donât know that.Â
âI donât know yet. John has to make a decision first.â He says nonchalantly, looking more stoic than usual.
You donât respond, waiting for something else. But thatâs it.
You canât help it, you start laughing. What could that possibly mean?
âJohn makes a decision?? Thatâs it? Whatâs the choice? To nuke or not to nuke the planet??â Youâre still giggling at this thought, though kinda morbid.Â
Dirk isnât laughing. âHa ha. No, itâs nothing like that. Itâs hard to explain. But the jist of what I was saying before, is itâs just that none of us are really meant to live a normal life on Earth C. Think about it. A bunch of immortal gods, of totally different upbringings and outlooks, and even species, all living on one little planet. Weâre bound to fuck shit up one day.â
Youâve stopped laughing now and take a second to think about this. Youâve never really considered it. âYeah⌠I guess now that you say it, that sounds kinda bad. We couldâve done with a few more planets in the system honestly.âÂ
âNo, itâs not about the number of planets. Even if we all had our own planets, weâd end up going to war and shit with each other one day. Weâre just not meant to lead normal lives.â
You frown at this. Why would friends go to war with each other? Granted, not everyone was super close, but we all fought to make this universe, why would we tear it apart?Â
âI think youâre oversimplifying it. Not all of us want to be dictators.â You roll your eyes and cross your arms. You definitely arenât happy about Janes plans, Dirk knows this.
âYou subtly talking about why you donât like Jane and the way she wants to lead just proves my point. And anyways, It doesnât matter. We donât have a choice in what we are. And what we are, is gods. Weâll have to ascend one day.â You search for a hint of irony in Dirks face, but heâs dead serious. Wow.
âAscend??? Dirk what the hell are you talking about?â
Itâs quiet for a moment. Dirk catches himself about to tell you too much about what has been fucking his brain for months, or more like years at this point. You can tell his silence is a troubled one.Â
You reach out a concerned hand to place on his arm. He flinches a little. âDirk⌠please tell me whatâs going on. What are you talking about?âÂ
He canât look at you. His head stays in place, but heâs avoiding eye contact even though you canât tell. Thereâs a lot of thoughts going through his mind right now. Not all of them are about his ultimate self that is inevitably going to take over one day. Some are about you. And about the outcome of this timeline. For a moment he feels sympathy for all his friends. But thereâs not much else I can tell you about what heâs thinking. Not now.
âI just⌠donât know how much time I have left.â He says, still having not moved, but his eyes watch the clock behind you.
âHow much⌠What? Dirk⌠Are you sick or something?â You are rapidly trying to understand his cryptic way of explaining to you, but it seems youâre falling short.Â
âNot physically.â He pauses and actually lets out a slight chuckle, putting his gloved hand on his mouth. You bask in his slight-laugh, heâs really so charming. More than he could know. âGod that sounded so emo.âÂ
âDude, I donât sound any better. Weâre both being emo, itâs fine.â You smile back at him, removing your hand from his arm. You feel a bit of tension leave your body that you didnât notice was there, the sound of his laugh ever like a cure to your stress.Â
He nods. Thereâs just so much he canât tell you, you wouldnât be able to understand. And he didnât want you to either. He didnât want to put that burden on you. There was only one person he could give that burden to, and he still wasnât sure when heâd have to tell her.Â
But there were some feelings he knew he could vaguely talk to you about.
âBut no, Iâm fine physically. Itâs just⌠I donât know. I guess Iâve been having the same thoughts you have. How long can this all really last? Who will I be hundreds of years from now? What if I donât even recognize myself anymore?â He pauses for a moment, and you watch him frown as he thinks of something. âI definitely wonât.â
You donât dare interrupt. You just sit and listen, attentive, the best you can. When Dirk starts opening up, you hardly say a word until heâs finished.Â
He goes on about how heâs been feeling especially useless and exhausted lately. Talking vaguely about his potential and his purpose, and that right now just felt like a stagnant period while he waits. But what if he doesnât want to have some greater purpose, or some ultimate potential destiny? Heâs always just wanted to be able to live a happy, normal life with his friends. He didnât get to grow up with other people and have relationships. Getting here to figure out that he really never would get that normalcy, sucked the hope out of him. At least, maybe he couldâve got a while if he had made the most of the last seven years. He canât even say they flew by, they dragged by painfully. He says heâs always just felt like heâs been watching his friends live through a window, communicating behind the glass, but not actively joining them.Â
You soak in every word like youâll need to know it for a test. You nod every now and then, and quietly âmhmâ, to show youâre listening. You can feel heâs still not done yet.Â
âI mean honestly (y/n), whatâs even the point of it all? You feel it too right? Thereâs no way weâre headed toward a future thatâll be of any real purpose.â
You decide to finally speak up since he addressed you. âAre you saying weâre in a doomed timeline?â You ask, enabling him to explain more.
âNo, itâs nothing like that. Iâm not even sure doomed timelines are possible anymore, theyâre just⌠timelines. But weâre definitely not going to be living happily ever fucking after.âÂ
Youâre giving him that sympathetic look now, but he reads it as pity. His head reflectively looks away. Heâs starting to get aggravated. âI donât know how much longer I can hold out. I donât even want to go through with this anymore. I just wish itâd all end.âÂ
Woah. Youâre eyes widen a little at what heâs implying. âDirk⌠donât say that-âÂ
âWhatâs even shittier about this whole thing is the fact that even if I really wanted to end it, I couldnât. None of us could. Except maybe the trolls. We have to wait for something just or heroic to happen and decide our fate for us. Weâre stuck to live in some shithole timeline with no way out. I have no choice. I either subject to being a depressed shut-in, or leave my humanity behind to pursue something above this existence. How pathetic is that?âÂ
Youâre not sure exactly what heâs going on about, but your instinct immediately is to comfort him. You take his hand. He doesnât flinch this time, but he doesnât look at you either.Â
âHey, just calm down for a second, okay? I promise you it doesnât have to be like that⌠I donât know whatâs due for this timeline, and Iâm not sure if you do⌠If Rose told your something or.. I donât know. But I always know that whatever life throws at me IâllâŚâ you hesitate to say the rest of the sentence. Itâs a little cheesy, it almost makes you cringe for a second. But then he looks at you, clearly anticipating the rest of your sentence. You push through. âIâll know Iâll be able to get through it, because youâll be here.âÂ
Heâs doesnât say anything, but his eyes are wider now. He has no idea what to say at this intimate sentence. The two of you have been close for a while now, but you never really express it verbally. You just enjoyed each other without having to say it usually. The lack of response eats at you, you have to say something else since he clearly canât think of what to say to that. You let go of his hand too, thinking maybe itâs making him uncomfortable.Â
But he watches your hand as you pull it away.Â
âAnd Iâll always be here for you! Iâll always be here to help you. I mean⌠if you âleftâ in whatever way that means IâdâŚâ You play with your hands again, the both of you staring at them, thumbs in a tug of war. âJust⌠please donât leave, okay?âÂ
You both look up at the same time to make eye contact, but itâs obviously more intense for him. He canât promise you that. Heâs told you he wonât already, but you refuse to understand him. Â
Youâre both quiet, and you anxiously bite your lip again at his lack of a reply. Why isnât he agreeing?Â
â(Y/n)⌠have you ever thought about trying to take your own life? Just to see what happens?â The sudden dark inquiry sends your heart into your stomach. Why is he saying this? Your face looks terrified, but he doesnât say anything, still looking.Â
âDirk.. W-what are you say-â
âHave you?â
You swallow hard. This is something you REALLY donât like to talk or think about. Itâs something youâve never spoken to anyone about.Â
But the answer is yes. Of course. You think about it a lot recently. It started when you started living alone. Those restless nights, wondering what the meaning of it all was. You wondered if maybe the clock of justice would consider the theft of your own lifespan a worthy enough cause. Why would a godtier with no will to live be worthy of such a title? It wouldnât even makes sense, like more of a punishment than a reward. In a sense, you killed yourself to get this title. Why couldnât you do the same to remove it?Â
Maybe you could.Â
Youâve been quiet a suspicious amount of time now. It tells Dirk his answer, but he still waits for you to admit it. His social cues are still really not the best sometimes, even after getting used to social interaction. Youâre clearly uncomfortable.
Youâre looking at your lap again, but your hands are still. Youâre too deep in traumatic thought to even want to move. ââŚOf course I have.â Is all you say after a while.
âHave you tried?âÂ
His question sounds genuine. Actually curious.Â
âNo. I wouldnât dare. What ifâŚâ
âIt worked?â
ââŚYeahâŚâÂ
âThen itâd finally be over.âÂ
When you look up, heâs still staring at you. Youâre still scared, your heart breaking more with every word he says, but he seems calm now. As if heâs decided something in his mind. The more the clock ticks, the more anxious you get. What is he thinking?
Youâre just about to speak up again, try to say something to calm the conversation, or just to change it to something less triggering. But he suddenly stands up. You look up at him, face getting more worried.Â
âDirk?â
Heâs not looking at you anymore. And without a word, he turns around and begins to walk away.Â
âDirk?? Where are you going?!â You automatically stand up when he just continues to get farther away, turning to go down the hallway.
You follow him, quickly.
âHey! Wait! You canât just leave the conversation like that!â
You watch him turn into the bathroom, and shut the door before you can get to it. You jiggle the doorknob, but of course itâs locked. Youâre panicking a bit now. This panic causes you to bang on the door without thinking, feeling a bit helpless.Â
âDirk!!! What are you doing in there?! Please just wait a se-â
âRelax.â You hear him calmly through the door. You silence immediately hearing his voice. âIâm just using the bathroom.âÂ
Your face automatically turns a slight pink. All of the panic and anxiety turns into embarrassment in the blink of an eye. You mustâve been overreacting. You do that sometimes.Â
âO-ohâŚ.. Okay. Sorry⌠Iâll leave you alone then.â Youâre cursing yourself in your mind as you start making your way back down the hall.Â
Halfway through though, you stop suddenly. Taking a second to think about what just happened, to see if you were really overreacting. You come to the conclusion that you definitely werenât, now that the embarrassment has subsided. Why would he just suddenly lock himself in the bathroom after your intense discussion about suicide? That is definitely concerning!Â
You feel better having justified yourself. You then come to the rational decision that youâd give him 5 minutes and then check on him. Hopefully youâre jumping to conclusions, and heâs just really bad at ending conversations like usual. You take a direct turn into the kitchen that was right next to you. You flip the light switch on and take a seat at the table. What an exhausting conversation you just had. That was not how you were expecting that to go at all.
You look around. The kitchen isnât excused from having a bunch of junk in it. Thereâs spare parts and random doodads laying all over the place. Wow, did you just think the word âdoodadâ? Who are you, Jake? Sometimes being here alone with him made you feel like it. Like Jakes replacement.
You decide youâre just gonna tuck that repressed thought back deep into your brain. Thatâs not even possible, you and Dirk arenât even⌠I mean he would never⌠Wait didnât he just tell you earlier that you shouldnât assumâŚ. OKAY THATS ENOUGH.Â
The clock ticks by with the speed of a damn snail. Youâre just sitting there watching it. You donât even have the energy to check your phone to distract yourself. One minute has gone by and youâre waiting on the second. Youâre also listening intently for any concerning noises, but youâre pretty sure the walls in this place are very thick. You couldnât hear him drilling or anything from outside earlier, and the hallway isnât that long.
Youâre staring at a piece of hair in your face, blowing it up and watching it fall back down, passing the time. Three minutes now. Your stomach grumbles, and you decide to check Dirks fridge for inventory. When you open it up, itâs literally just like 10 half gallons of milk(?). This is clearly equisprites doing, but what has Dirk been eating??? Does he ever go out for food? Does he alchemize it? Who knows. You sigh and sit back down.Â
Just as youâre counting down the last minute, you hear the bathroom door open and you look over to the doorway. After a few steps Dirks frame passes right by without glancing at you, even though it was obvious you were in there with the light being on. You sigh x2 combo and stand up from the table, walking out and back into the hallway to follow him.Â
Heâs sitting back on his bench in the living room, working again. You watch him, about 6 feet away. You donât even know what to say, and you take your time trying to think of something.Â
âAre you⌠okay?â Is all you could come up with.Â
Thereâs no response. You can see heâs assembling his drill with a different top. Heâs gonna drown you out.Â
âDirk. Itâs alright if you donât wanna talk about it anymore. You can just-â the drilling starts â-⌠say that.â
You look dejected. Itâs a sad scene honestly, if you could see it like I am in my mind right now, and I hope you are.Â
Heâs never been this distant before, especially not after opening up so deeply like that. His feelings were like a one way ticket each time, once youâre in, youâre in. But heâs forced you out after already letting you in. It didnât make any sense. You look at the clock on the wall. It stopped working. When did that happen?Â
âIs there anything I can do to get you to talk to me?â You ask as a last resort.
Unsurprisingly, no answer. You give up. Quite frankly, that whole conversation tired you out too, emotionally. If he doesnât wanna talk about it anymore, thatâs fine by you.Â
âDo you mind if I stay over at least? Is the guest room still open?â You ask, expecting an answer, since itâs unrelated.
However, still no answer. You donât know why you thought youâd get one that time. You decide to just take his silence as a yes. Youâve stayed over his house plenty of times before. A lot of the time when you guys would hang out, youâd talk or do something into late hours of the night, and not realize how late itâd gotten. The guest room might as well be yours at this point, since youâre pretty sure no one else ever stays over. Other than Jake, but heâll just sleep in Dirks room. Obviously. And Dave has his own room here for some reason.Â
You take yourself up the stairs, and you gaze at him for a minute from the rail before you make your way to the room. This whole day has made you sadder than you already were, you think.
When youâre in the room, you donât even take in the interior. Youâve seen it a million times. Itâs just a bunch of subtle weeb decor. Annoyingly aesthetic. You faceplant onto the bed and kick your shoes off. Itâs not even that late, but youâre so exhausted from that interaction and from not getting much sleep the night before. Insomnias been hitting you hard lately since you didnât have Dirk. Itâs been especially lonely. Somehow being in Dirks house lulls you right to sleep immediately.
You sleep like a baby. A full 8 hours, something you havenât had in a while. When your eyes flutter open itâs pitch black, only the light of the bedside clock glaring at you. 2:00am. Wow, itâs early. Or late, you guess?
You donât know what to do since you feel so awake now. You could probably sleep a little more? You decide you wouldnât mind some milk right now before you go back to bed. Assuming the white fridge liquid is milk. Youâll take your chances.
You make your way down the stairs, and as youâre descending you start to remember todays conversation. You cringe a bit. The whole thing was so emo and embarrassing on both of your parts. Youâre pretty sure you made him uncomfortable towards the end and thatâs probably what scared him-
Suddenly your thoughts are cut off. You hear⌠A voice. Dirk? It was only quick, but you see a small light from the hallway leading to the kitchen. You follow it quietly, curious.Â
When you see him, you freeze at the sight.
Heâs leaning over the kitchen sink, head hanging. Heâs facing away from you, and youâre kind of hiding in the doorway anyways. The ambiance is coming from a small nightlight over the counter. You wish you could see his face. You hear a quick sniffle.
Youâre deciding whether to say something or walk away. It seems like heâd want to be alone right now. Or does he need someone more than ever? Heâs been so hard to read. You always think you interfere too much with him, but you canât help it. Then, you hear him let out a small, quick sob. Probably the source of what you heard earlier. He sounds like heâs trying to hold it in, even though thereâs no one around from his perspective. Your heart breaks. You have basically no control over what you do next.Â
Suddenly, Dirk feels a pair of arms wrap around his abdomen, a warm body leaning into his back, embracing him. He jumps slightly at first, but relaxes into it after a minute. Heâs silent now. No sniffling, no sobs.Â
âIâm sorry.â Is all you say once you feel him relax.Â
Itâs silent again. All you can hear is the clock behind you.Â
âYou donât have to respond, I just canât stand to-âÂ
âI tried it.â He says, cutting you off. He sounds defeated.
Your eyes widen a little. âYou triedâŚâ
âTo kill myself. Earlier.â He states way too bluntly.
Your heart sinks. âOhâŚâÂ
Silence.Â
âIt didnât work.â
âWell, I can see that.âÂ
âBecause I couldnât actually do it.â
You pause for a moment.
âHuh?â
âI couldnât really go through with it a hundred percent⌠I have to see this timeline through. Itâs my burden to bear.â He grits his teeth and grips the sink. You feel his tensing.
âIâm sorry, Dirk.â Itâs all you can think of to say. You donât want to bother asking him to clarify anymore. You have no idea what heâs going through or what to suggest. This is all you know. You hold him tighter, and nuzzle a little bit more into his back.
He relaxes again, to your surprise. And he lets go of the sink with one hand to place it on your arm. You canât see his face right now, and you wish you could. The two of you stay like that a little longer. After a minute or two you can feel him crying again.Â
Youâre sure itâs hard for him. Not just what heâs going though, but being vulnerable about it.Â
Suddenly, you feel yourself start to tear up too. The two of you share a cry almost silently, not having to see each other in this emotional state, but still holding on and having someone there.Â
âI promise itâll be okay.â You say, breaking the silence. âWhatever youâre going through, weâll go through it together. Iâm a god tier too. I promise Iâll be here for you.â
It honestly feels like this made him cry a little harder as you feel him shake a little more.Â
He raises his hands up to his face to wipe away any evidence of emotion under his shades. Then, to your surprise again, he breaks out of your embrace, only to turn around and embrace you again straight on.
Youâre surprised for a moment, but when it settles in, you hug him back with all you have. And maybe itâs just you, but no hug between you two has ever felt this⌠passionate?
âSorry Iâm being like this. Itâs just been hard. Iâve never been this emotional about it, even though Iâve known it for so long. I think itâs because itâs getting closer. And because youâre here. Probably why Iâve also been ignoring everyone.â He confesses. âSo thereâs your answer. I just didnât want you to see me like this. Iâm sorry, again.â
Again, you have no idea exactly what heâs talking about, and you make a mental note to maybe ask about it again another time when youâre both more stable. But youâre just committed to comforting him to your best ability right now.
âYou donât have to apologize, Dirk. You can tell me anything, seriously. Iâm sorry thereâs nothing I can do to help you. I wish I could.â
You feel him sigh slightly, but it seems more like relief than frustration or anything negative.Â
âYou should really get some sleep. Have you been up this whole time?â You say, changing the subject in concern for his wellbeing. You wonder what his nights have been like all this time you havenât been talking.Â
âYeah. But Iâm fine. I donât really have a sleep schedule anymore.â
âWell, looks like weâre starting now then. Cmon.â
He doesnât complain or object when you pull back and take his hand to walk out into the hallway. The two of you make your way upstairs and into Dirks room. He doesnât say anything, and you couldnât possibly know what heâs thinking right now. About you.Â
You stop right after walking in the doorway and let go of his hand.
âWell, goodnight. Iâll see you in the morning, kay?â You say, giving him as much of a genuine smile as you can manage. You start walking past him to leave.
But then his hand grabs yours, stopping you. You freeze for a second, and turn to look at your friend again.
Your eyes widen at the sight when your eyes meet his. He had pulled his shades up to sit on his head, and for the first time you see his eyes, along with the rest of his face. Granted, itâs pretty dark so you canât see the color well, but you canât help but think theyâre beautiful, just like the rest of him. His face also just reads âexhaustedâ, and tired from all the crying and emotion showed in the last however many hours. The two of you are quiet, staring at each other like this for a moment.Â
âWould you⌠wanna stay?â He says, not breaking eye contact, but still seeming slightly unsure about it?Â
âStay⌠like, stay over? Yeah.. I-I was just gonna go to the guest r-â
âNo. I meant in here.â
Youâre blushing now. Good thing itâs dark, you guess. âIn⌠your room?â
âYeah.â
âIn your bed?â
âMhm.â
He seems much less embarrassed by this than you, of course. Youâre extremely flustered now that youâve made sure he meant what you think he meant. Wait⌠does that mean he wants to sleep with you or like SLEEP with you??? Oh god-
âNot anything weird. I just mean like, we can sleep in the same bed.â He says, almost like he read your mind. âIt just feels like we both kinda need some comfort right now. And it feels weird to have you sleep in a different room after⌠Yknow everything that just happened. You donât have to, if youâre not comfortable with it.â
âNo!â You say, embarrassingly fast. You clear your throat a bit, not making it any better. He smirks at you slightly, tilting his head. Lord have mercy. âI mean⌠That actually sounds nice, yeah.â
He smiles in response, and you bask in the sight. Dirk Strider smiling at you, fully exposed so you can see all his beautiful features at once. Youâre actually really happy right now. You havenât felt this happy in a while. Which is kinda ironic after todays conversations. Why does he feel like a cure to your pain every time?
With his hand still holding onto yours, he guides you over to the bed. He puts his shades on the bedside table. When you both lay down and get under the covers, he turns to face you. Your heart is pounding like a million times per second right now as you turn to look back at him.
âYouâre blushing pretty hard right now. You okay?â He says, and you can definitely see that slight little shit-eating smirk. Heâs really gonna tease you right now. How could he even tell youâre blushing?
âShut up! Iâm fine⌠You just caught me off guard..â You defend.
âWhat? Did you think I wanted to have sex?â You would think heâs teasing since heâs still smirking, but it also sounds kind of like a genuine question.
Hearing him say it out loud while looking at you with those intense eyes makes you blush harder, like your face is actively working against you. âNO! Well⌠I mean I wasnât sure.â You have to look away for a second. âAnd sleeping in the same bed just feels intimate in its own way, even without sex.âÂ
He nods understandingly. âYeah, youâre right, this is pretty intimate I guess.â Itâs silent for a moment then. ââŚBut âŚI donât know. It just feels right after everything that happened today.â He looks away now, facing the ceiling.Â
This grants you to look back at him. You take in his beauty, the moonlight from the window being the only luminescence to light the scene. Even the curve of his nose looks perfect, making an impressive outline of his side profile. You just canât stress to yourself enough how you love seeing him like this. You wish you could do it everyday. Youâre smiling without realizing it.Â
âYou can take a picture if you want, itâll last longer.â He says, glancing at you while keeping his head in place.
You blush again and shove at him lightly. âFuck you!â You say, but you laugh afterwards. He smiles in response. If only you could stay this way forever.Â
You turn to face the ceiling as well. After that, it feels like itâs the end of your conversation, and you both start trying to fall asleep. Youâre laying there for so long trying to sleep, you canât remember how long itâs been. You did get a lot of sleep earlier so it makes sense that itâs a little hard now, plus being in bed with Dirk isnât helping. Your heart is still kinda racing.Â
What happens next almost gives you a heart attack. You feel Dirk snag his arms around your torso, his face leaning into your arm. Youâre frozen, and youâre not sure if heâs sleeping or not, so you donât say anything.
As if he feels your discomfort, he speaks, in a low tone âSorry. Is this okay?â
âMhmâŚâ you respond quietly, and carefully move your arm up and put it over him, and he automatically leans into your side now.
Now itâs really hard to sleep, so you just open your eyes. You look down at him and take in the rare and perfect sight of Dirk Strider sleeping. He looks so peaceful. Unbothered, undisturbed by Earth C and all your stupid post-Sburb problems. You wish you could make it all go away for him.Â
You start to run your hands though his hair softly, and he hums slightly in response. Still slightly awake, but you can tell heâs on his way out. You smile at how natural this feels now.Â
You finally feel yourself start to fall asleep as well.Â
âI think Iâll stay here for a while.â You say quietly, but Dirk is already sleeping. And you follow suit with him again as soon as you say that.Â
The two of you stay intertwined for the rest of the night.Â

Yayayayay I have no idea where to start
Okay so
They both think theyâre nonchalant
They are very not
Dave thinks heâs cool so bad
And he is!
Itâs just
He canât keep up the stone cold tough guy act if you find one of his jokes funny
If you curl up next to him on the couch
If you and Karkat are kissing him, heâs red as a beet
No sunglasses can hide that blush, champ
Karkat on the other hand
Heâs trying to act normal
Itâs really hard
He doesnât want to come on too strong
Sometimes walking the line between being a bit too harsh to overcompensate for his feelings and being too much of a hopeless romantic
He has tried the move of yawning to put his arm around you at least once
Heâll deny it if you point it out
âTHATS ONE OF THE STUPIDEST SUGGESTIONS IVE EVER HAD THE DISPLEASURE OF HEARING WITH MY OWN EARS IN PERSON.â
He canât believe you would even imply he would pull something like that
No secret that KK has watched more than his fair share of romcoms though
You canât fool me buddy
It was a very long road to get to a place with Dave where he was comfortable with affection in general
Itâs been tough for him to come to terms with touch as something positive
Both you and Karkat are extremely aware of how heâs feeling at any time
You both know all his tells if heâs feeling it or not
He would hate this fact because it means his carefully crafted façade isnât as effective as heâd like to be
Dave Strider you cutie
So youâll never tell him
Karkat is melting inside if he walks in on the two of you napping together
He canât help but curl up beside his two partners
Itâs truly incredible to him that the three of you have reached this point
Itâs even commonplace now to lay like this while heâs forcing you and Dave to watch one of his movies

The troll characters will be in here, if you want to view them as humans go ahead but I donât think Iâll specify if theyâre regular trolls or just humans here
Btw the readers friend group is just a mostly random mix of characters I like đ (Terezi, Roxy, Nepeta, Gamzee) and this'll probably have other ships ill tag later,, don't read if you get upset reading other ships you don't like (there won't be any proship ones)
Reader is mostly kept gender neutral but there might be some gender terms both feminine and masculine but can just be seen as jokey names. This fic is mostly silly n fun
(Also this is being cross posted from my ao3 account :p)
I walked back to school without any rush, after all, itâs not that far away. Pulling my phone from my pocket I noticed the onslaught of messages from my friends both individually and in our group chat.Â
It was a mix of encouragement but also aggressive curiosity, demanding to know the details.Â
I sent a quick message to get them off my back, Iâm not really in the mood for a debrief right now, Iâd rather wait till weâre all together or else Iâd just be explaining the same things over and over.
Me
-Letâs meet up after school and head to the park
-Iâll talk then :pÂ
I meant what I said. I ignored Roxyâs prodding and Nepetaâs begging for details. Lucky for me, we werenât doing much in my last few classes, just missing work and a project I already finished so I was able to take it easy up until the bell rang.Â
Nepeta, who I had my last class with, clung to my sleeve as we navigated our way through the crowds of teens and grown-ass adults who wouldâve been out in the real world if they hadnât failed so many times. Maneuvering through hoards of kids was an art form me and Nepeta had mastered, squeezing through and slipping past groups hogging up the hallways so that we could finally leave.Â
After me and Nepeta left the front entrance we started heading over to the park which was only two blocks away. Her phone buzzed in her pocket, I watched as she pulled it out and checked the notification.
âGamzee said heâs there already! I know his class is on the first floor but geez he must walk fast huh..â She began to mumble as she typed out a response.Â
âWell, honestly Iâm not even sure he goes to his last class that much. He heard you donât need a fourth year of math to graduate so he stopped caring about it.â I laughed, remembering a time he facetimed me when I was sick and stayed home, documenting his escape which was just him hopping out the classâs window and leaving to come visit me.
When we got to the park, Gamzee was there as he said he'd be, lightly moving back and forth on one of the swings.Â
âSup lil mama.â Gamzee greeted as Nepeta ran up to him
âHi Gamz!â Nepeta replied as she returned the fist bump he offered her.Â
I quickly plopped onto the swing next to him before starting to rock myself back and forth.Â
âHey, Guys!â I hear Roxyâs voice call out, sheâs jogging towards us, leading Terezi by the hand.Â
âBe careful!â I began to call out, worried about Terezi tripping but the one who ended up falling was Roxy, stepping on her untied shoelace before tumbling forward, almost taking Terezi with her.
âGAH!â Roxy yelled dramatically at her little topple into the fake grass covered floor.Â
We all stare in silence as she lay in a pose I can only describe as the family guy character fall, not making any moves to get up.
Terezi yanked her up to her feet, what a strong girl , and kept walking toward us, now leading Roxy.
Terezi feels towards one of the metal poles holding up the swing set before using it to brace herself as she sat down, facing us.Â
âSo how was your little cheap date with the delivery boy?â She asks with a snarky playful tone.
âCheap date?âÂ
âWhat? You think Panda Express is a noble establishment?â She snickered.
âWell, no! But it wasnât exactly a date anyway, I mean his friend was there.â
âOhh right you guys had a third wheel huh? Damn! Mustâve been hard to make a move right?â Roxy asked as she took a seat next to Terezi.Â
âActually, Theyâre actually coming to my house to hang out.â I say smugly.
âWait âtheyâ?â Nepeta tilted her head in confusion. The rest of the group having similar expressions.
âBoth Dave and KarkatâŚâÂ
âDude.â
âI know! I should be trying to focus on getting to know Dave but I canât just- not include Karkat when heâs right there! Thatâs so mean.â I tried defending myself.Â
âBesides I like hanging with Karkat- well now I do. He was kinda a dick to me before but I think weâre starting to get along- or more like heâs starting to accept me?â I start swinging back and forth more now.Â
âLike he was kinda cold to me when we first started talking but by the end he actually smiled at me and I donât know I kinda felt proud that I was able to-â my rambling got cut off by Gamzee who just sighed next to me, shaking his head in disappointment. âDonât tell me youâre seriously tryna snag both of those motherfuckers?â He asked.Â
âWhat!?âÂ
âWe went over this, thereâs nooo way you could handle multiple hoes- especially not after the serious hoe drought youâve been in.â Roxy said, patting my knee in a false sympathetic way.Â
âNo Iâm not- thatâs not what I-!â Then I paused to think about it for a moment.Â
Dave and Karkat.Â
Dave AND Karkat..
I leaned back in the swing and looked to the sky, thinking. Seriously thinking.Â
âUh.. (Y/n)..? We were just joking, yaknow..â Roxy said, patting my leg, trying to bring me back to reality but it was too late, I got a ticket for a train at delusion station and itâs already taken off with me on board.
âNo cause now that I think about itâŚâÂ
âUgh Gamz whyâd you have to put that idea in their head!?â Terezi scoffed.
âNo guys hear me out..â
âIâm listening!âÂ
âThank you Nepeta, you sweet girl, if no one got me, Nepeta got me,â I pat her head, âSo, Dave and Karkat are pretty close from what I can tell, I donât wanna get in between their bromance so what if I turn their bromance into a three-way romance? â I explain, waiting for the inevitable judge-y eyes.Â
.
..
.. .
.. ..
âYâknow what? If you think youâre a motherfucker who could pull some shit like that off, then go ahead.â Gamzee laughed as he got up from the swing.Â
âI mean, I donât know how youâd do it but it wouldnât hurt to try?â Nepeta shrugged.Â
âWhattt? 2/4 in support of a very obviously dumb idea from me? Is hell freezing over?â I joke.
âYeah and usually Iâm the one egging you on!â Roxy said, helping Terezi get up from the floor.Â
âI definitely think itâs dumb, I mean do you even like this Karkat guy?â Terezi asked, crossing her arms as we all started to leave the park.Â
âWell.. heâs cute.â
âOh hell yeah heâs a cute motherfucker.â Gamzee called out from the front.Â
âAnd maybe Iâm crazy but I think he might be a little interested in me.â I giggle.
âYeah, maybe you are crazy.â Terezi mumbled, bumping her shoulder into mine.Â
âSo did Dave seem interested in you?â Roxy asked.Â
âAh Iâm not too sure. Like we all got along fine but I wouldnât say he took a specific liking to me, my charms havenât wooed him yet!âÂ
âSo thatâs why youâre tryna pull his little friend too? In case it doesnât work out with him?â Terezi asked with a raised eyebrow.
âNo!? Yes? Maybe? I donât know! Either way! Fact is theyâre both coming to my house this weekend. Iâm gonna go to Walmart to buy some snacks or something.âÂ
âWelp, I guess weâll go with you.â Roxy slung her arm around my shoulder, âand Iâll buy you a bag of chips that you can share with your hopefully future loverboys.â She giggled.Â
They all followed me to Walmart and very sweetly decided to buy me something for the weekend hangout all while they continued to ask some questions about Dave and Karkat and my intentions with them and I answered as best I could.Â
Roxy buying me some chips and salsa (aw), Nepeta buying me two cans of Pillsbury cinnamon rolls (yum!), Gamzee stealing a bag of mixed candy (aw?), and Terezi buying me a box of condoms (uh..?).
âWHAT? Terezi I wonât be needing these!?â I yell as I shake the box in her face.Â
âWell itâs better to be prepared right?â She shrugged.Â
âOkay but you bought them in extra small!?âÂ
âIâm just guessing their size.â
âWhat? Do ya think Dave and Karkat are slinging around big olâ horse co-ââOKAY conversation over!â I cut off whatever Gamzeeâs comment was and shoved the box to the very bottom of the bag.Â
âThanks for the uhâŚÂ normal gifts guys.â I sighed.
âNo purroblem!â Nepeta said as she gave me a hug. âHope things go well! I gotta head home and feed my cats, talk to you guys later!â She waved goodbye before walking off.Â
âWell I should head off too, ttyl!â Roxy said, patting my shoulder as she left.Â
Me, Terezi and Gamzee walked together a bit longer since our homes were in the same general area.Â
We passed the time as we walked talking about random topics and mutual friends.Â
âHey (Y/n)?â Terezi started.
âYeah?â
âIf you and Dave- or Karkat- or whoever the fuck I donât even know, start dating, youâre not gonna forget about us right?â Terezi asked, her fingers anxiously messing with the hem of her shirt.Â
âNo..? No! Of course not! Whyâd you think that?â I sling my arm over her shoulder and pull her close, Gamzee starting to pat her back.Â
âUgh.. I donât know.. forget it. I feel stupid.." She tries to pull away but me and Gamzee hold her still.Â
âHey,â he grabs her by the shoulders, âNo matter who we meet or date or whatever the fuck, weâre always gonna stick together, okay? Donât start getting all motherfuckinâ lonely cuz yâknow weâre always gonna be there.â Gamzee says rather seriously.Â
I watch as her lip quivers a bit and feel my own chest tightening. I give her a hug which she gives back, squeezing incredibly tight.Â
Terezi used to be friends with a girl named Vriska, the two were super close and even though Terezi never really said Iâm pretty sure she was even in love with her. Then Vriska kinda ditched her and cut her off completely for seemingly no reason.Â
I think that still sticks with her even after all this time. I rub her back and wait for her breathing to settle down.
âYeah Iâm not going anywhere baby girl.â I whisper playfully in her ear.
âEughk! Get off me!â She quickly shoves me away and keeps walking.
âBaby girl come back!â
âGive us some love baby girl-â
âShut up!â She yelled right as Gamzee tried to join in.Â
We kept walking, a silent agreement between all of us to not mention Tereziâs little moment of insecurity. We are conscious of it but it doesnât need to get talked about, especially if she doesnât want to.Â
As we walk, we near the Pizza Hut that Dave and Karkat worked.
âWait, let me say hi!â I say as I cut through the parking lot and walked up to the window, peeking to see if they were there, Terezi and Gamzee following.Â
I could see them both actually, arguing about something , I donât think it was serious because Dave didnât really seem to give a fuck but when does he ever give a fuck?Â
I tap the glass, getting their attention and wave âhiâ, them both noticing and smiling a bit, waving back.Â
Then Karkat freezes and a second later a look of confusion crosses his face as he points towards us.Â
I realize he recognizes Gamzee.Â
Gamzee realizes he recognizes Gamzee.
We run.Â
Dragging a confused Terezi as we hear the jingle of the door opening and a very upset Karkat yelling out âWhat the fuck are you doing here!?âÂ
âWhat the hell? Why is he yelling at us!?â Terezi asked as we ran.
âI guess the motherfuckerâs still mad about the edible?â
âNo shit!?â

Terzei,, my luv,,
I don't think people talk about Terezi and Vriska's relationship enough or at least not in a way that isn't surface level. Liekk Terezi loves Vriska so much but I don't think Vriska is capable of deeply loving anyone because of how she was raised. I don't think she can keep anyone closer than at an arms length which is really sad not only to Terezi but to Vriska too. She will always be cursed with loneliness thanks to no one but herself and it she can't even fully face that fact of her emotions because she's stuck trying adhere to the cool girl idgaf about nothing persona. Maybe that's why Terezi took interest in Dave, because he was a cool guy but was at least able to let people in.
srry im rambling,, i don't even like vriska *skull emoji*
I don't think I'm gonna add vrisrezi as an actually ship liek as in actutally make them date but I might talk about their feelings 4 each other l8r
next chapter will be the actual weekend hangout with davekat :p
Dave tossed his backpack, which looked practically empty, to the floor before walking over to the cashier.Â
âYou want the same as usual Karkat?â Dave calls out and receives a yeah back.
âSo,â I start, âYou come here often?âÂ
âNot really. Just one of the few food places near the school. I donât even like Panda Express in general.â Karkat mumbles, not looking up from his phone.
Wow kids these days and their damn phones. Itâs impolite to not look at people while theyâre talking⌠Iâm not sure if Karkat doesnât like me specifically or if heâs just a hateful person period.
Maybe itâs a bit of both.
He only looks up from his phone when Dave comes with their food. Dave and Karkat sit across from me at the table, the rest of the place is relatively empty besides some lonely bald man eating by himself in the corner.Â
âWere you here long? Before we came I mean.â Dave asks diving in.Â
âAh not really, only for like 4 minutes after I ordered.â I said starting to eat my own food too.Â
âYeah, our schools arenât that far but me and Karkat gotta speed-walk to and back. We try to come back during passing period so itâs not as noticeable when we sneak in.â He explains.
âOh do you guys have someone to let you in? I gotta text my friend to open the door for me.âÂ
âYeah- Well, we used to have John do it but he got annoyed nâ started saying âfigure it out yourselvesâ So now we ask this other friend of ours, Jade, âcause sheâs like- too nice to say no.â Dave says, his voice a bit muffled at the end after taking another bite.
â Gross, don't talk with your mouth full, you're making me lose my appetite.â Karkat complains in disgust, tilting himself to face away from Dave.
âAnd the only reason Harley doesnât refuse is because you bitch and whine like a puppy until she feels bad. Or gets annoyed.âÂ
âI donât bitch and whine- you know what? Youâve been real bitchy with me for a while now.âÂ
âIâm not bitchy!â
â Sureee. I bet youâre just salty I said that the trashy romance movie you were watching was cringe.â Dave said, pointing his fork at Karkat in an accusing manner.Â
âItâs not cringe! You just donât know how to appreciate romance because youâre an insufferable dimwitted prick with no tact or capability to appreciate deep and emotional romantic bonds between people!â Karkat argued.
âYou watch romance movies? Really? You donât seem the type.â I laughed light heartedly but he seemed to be in self defense mode. Karkat tensed up, clearly upset and aggressive but Dave paid no mind, being already used to it.
âUrgh! Anyone with a decent brain can enjoy a good romance story but clearly thatâs too much to ask from braindead dickwads like you two!â He shouted, not caring about the lone worker and sad old man that were now staring, both of them giving looks to each other and engaging in a silent conversation that probably went like, âGeez whatâs that kidâs deal?â âI donât know dude, he doing too muchâ âRight? He donât know nothing about being an adult. Fuck he so angry for?â âLiterally like get a job lilâ bro đâ â I want youâŚÂ â âMeet me in the backâŚâ
âHey man, I never said anything against romance movies! Like I donât go out of my way to watch them but I like stories with romance- when theyâre done well of course and not filled with cheesy cliches.â I said in a soft voice, trying to calm him down.
âOh.â Karkat almost visibly deflated, realizing he wasnât being attacked or made fun of (at least not by me). He even looked a bit embarrassed.Â
âWhaaat? For reals youâre into that shit?â Dave tried to tease.
âI mean sure, they can be cute and sweet y'know? Type of shit that makes you see beauty in life and hope in human connections bro. Obviously they can be super dramatic and unrealistic when it comes to the ideals and standards but what makes them unrealistic is us. Weâre the ones who are stopping ourselves from acting in all these loving ways. Obviously if someone is capable of thinking up these romantic gestures and words, then we should be capable of doing them right? As lame as that sounds.â I finished my little speech before taking a bite of my food, Karkat nodding quickly in agreement.Â
âHmm..â Dave rested his chin and just stared at me. It was silent for a bit, as he tried to figure out what to say next. Or maybe he didnât have anything to say at all, instead processing my words as if they were something heâd never considered.Â
â Thank you! â Karkat exclaimed, âThatâs how I feel but couldnât really put it into words.â He had a rare smile, at least rare to me. I mightâve been one of the few people that didnât tease him for liking something that seemed to be a major interest. I mirrored his smile and felt happy, I liked that I was able to find something to put us on good terms.Â
âWe got like 20 minutes before next class.â I said after checking my phone.Â
âDamn- hurry up Karkat we gotta leave in like 10 minutes.â Dave said, now rushing the rest of his food in his mouth.Â
âIâve literally been done.â Karkat said, his bowl practically scraped clean.
âJesus- you vacuumed that shit up huh?â I laughed
âI didnât eat breakfast okay!?âÂ
After me and Dave finished, there was about 5 minutes till they had to leave so it was just some simple small talk. We talked about school a bit but then the conversation shifted to home life where they mentioned that they both had older brothers that they lived with.Â
âWow I kinda just live alone. My parents are always working so itâs more like the apartment is just a place where they pay to keep their stuff in.â I said.
âMan I wish I had a house to myself- no offense to my bro but sometimes I get grossed out by how messy the house is with all his miscellaneous junk like sex puppets and mechanical parts tossed around. Well I guess some of the mess is partially my fault too though.âÂ
Sex puppets???
âUgh I wish I had a laid back brother like yours. Kankri throws a fit if I just leave a sock on the floor. Of my room!? Like get out! This is my space! Itâs because of him I donât even like having friends over.â Karkat complained, his arms crossed in an all too familiar fashion.Â
âSame- well, I think Dirk is fine with me having friends over but heâs usually a solitary guy and it makes me feel guilty cause itâs like weâre bothering him.â Dave sighs before checking the time again.Â
âUh well if you guys want, youâre welcome to hang out at my place! Like I said no oneâs really there to bother us.â I offer nervously, unsure if theyâd be interested in the offer.Â
They both look to each other as they contemplate the offer.Â
âYou got a TV?â Dave asks.
âWhat type of weird ass question is that?â Karkat questioned.Â
âWell I donât know, maybe theyâre poor- not that thereâs anything wrong with being poor. Hashtag poorpeoplerights.âÂ
I just look at Dave with an irritated and judgmental look that Karkat mirrors.Â
ââŚYes I have a TV..âÂ
âOkay cool- I can bring over my Xbox and some games then.â Dave says throwing up some finger guns to try and ease the dirty looks heâs getting.
ââŚOkay..â I mutter.
..
âŚ
âŚ.
âOkay guys c'mon. I can take only one person staring at me with judgy eyes at a timeâ Dave complained.Â
I just laughed a bit, finally breaking.Â
âI got some card games and movies if you guys wanna do that too.âÂ
âCan I bring my own movies?â Karkat asked.Â
âSure-â âNope. No can do amigo.â Dave cut me off.Â
âWhy not?â Karkat asked, already aggravated with whatever Dave was about to say next.Â
âBecause youâre gonna play some lame ass romance movies or some bs like that.â Dave teased, shoving at Karkatâs shoulder and of course, really pissing him off.Â
âKarkat,â I cut him off before he could blow another fuse and maybe get us kicked out , even though weâre about to leave, âDonât worry about whatever Dave wants. This is my house. We can watch whatever you want dude.â I get up from my seat and pat his back. My hand rests on his shoulder as I lean by his ear and say, âbesides, Iâm sure whatever movie you bring will be great if itâs one you like.â I smile.
Now, maybe Iâm going crazy. Maybe Iâm just super full of myself. Maybe Iâm a delusional idiot whoâs mindâs been warped after being single for so long. Or maybe, Iâm the most desirable, smooth, alluring bitch alive, because I swear , I just seen Karkat blush.
Iâm so taken off guard that Iâm stunned into momentary silence.Â
â Thanks .â He murmurs, looking down, his hands playing with the hem of his sleeves awkwardly.Â
Now, Dave is still here, and in the corner of my eye I can see him look at me, then at Karkat, then to me, then back at Karkat.Â
And then he gasps.Â
And he just as quickly slaps his hand over his mouth as we both look at him in confusion.Â
âUhhhhh yeah that all, uh, sounds great dude. Like what, um, time do you want us to come over?â His voice cracks a bit.Â
âUmâŚHow about this weekend.? You guys can come over at like twoâÂ
âYeah okay. Great. Epic. Just send us your address later, c'mon Kat we gotta go.â Dave says hurriedly as he tugs Karkat up by his sleeve. The two pick up their bags and move to throw away their trash, Karkat taking mine to toss too.Â
I thank him but he only nods and follows Dave out the door. They wave goodbye through the window before speed-walking away.
âOh! I forgot to ask Karkat about GamzeeâŚâÂ
-----------
âDude.âÂ
âShut up.â
âDUDE.â
âI SAID SHUT UP.â Karkat yells before walking even faster.
âI saw that. Donât try to deny-â
âDENY WHAT? THEREâS NOTHING TO DENY!?â Karkat is borderline screaming and practically running now, Dave lightly jogging behind him. He doesnât need that much speed to catch up, one of his steps covers about two and a half of Karkatâs.Â
Eventually Karkat has to stop running though, the red pedestrian stop light flashing red as cars pass by. He catches his breath and tries to ignore the very obvious stare heâs getting from Dave.Â
âSo-â
Dave is cut off by Karkat's head snapping in his direction, his eyes wide and hostile. Dave just raises his eyebrow as a silent way of saying â explain â
âUgh,â Karkat scoffs before looking away and saying, âIt really is nothing.âÂ
âReally? Then why-â
âSorry I was just caught off guard by someone being actually nice to me, is that so crazy!?â He snaps before storming across the street as soon as the light said â walkâ.
âHey Iâm nice to you?â
Karkat looks back, a look of irritation on his face. â Really? â
Dave is slightly taken aback, even if he doesnât show it. He always thought that even through all the teasing and annoying they did that everything was okay, after all itâs not like anything was serious, it was just two bros messing around.Â
But maybe thatâs why Karkat felt the way he did. Because (Y/n) was being serious. Seriously nice and supportive, something they rarely were with each other.Â
But thatâs just how guys were, right? You donât go off talking about your feelings or whatever. You just hang out and maybe get a punch to the shoulder as support.Â
Wanting any more would be weird.
Right?
Dave shrugs off the thought before his overactive brain would take over and would make him spit word vomit he'd probably really regret later.
âWell anyways, maybe you should go after them? Itâs not like you got a line of people waiting for you in the love department.â Dave laughs.Â
âI already said itâs nothing. Theyâre cool but IâŚâ Karkat doesnât finish his sentence, an uneasy look on his face.
â Wait. No way⌠Is Kat actually into someone right now?â
âAnd he hasnât told me ?â Dave wonders, his troubled expression well masked behind his shades.Â
He refrains from asking though.
Even though he really wants to.Â
If the discomfort on Karkatâs face is anything to go off of, itâs not something he wants to talk about.Â
Dave feels a tightening in his chest. Not something that can be called pleasant at all. How is it in romance books they describe a tight feeling in the chest as something beautiful? A physical sensation to intense emotion? But what emotion is he feeling right now?Â
The silence between the both of them is uncomfortable, foreign, and gives him all too much room to think.
Is part of him upset that even though him and Karkat seemed to close, there was actually a gap this big between them? Dave thought they were able to tell each other anything. Well as much as two bros could tell each other. That theyâd stick together no matter what. No matter who complained or annoyed the other.
Is this tightening feeling in his chest loneliness?
Will that loneliness grow bigger if Karkat finds someone he genuinely loves?
A friend is a friend but a lover is a lover.
There's a fine line between them and now it seems like thereâs a huge canyon cutting between the two.Â
And if he looks down at how deep that canyon is, would he be able to be content with its distance? Or will his legs give out at the realization of how far apart they are?Â
Will he continue to long for the intimacy a friend isnât allowed?
