October 19th, 2025, Inktober '24 Prompt # 19 - Arctic. I was so lucky to catch this Fleischer Superman short, "The Arctic Giant," on the big screen at the Alamo Drafthouse, restored a few months ago. Betty Boop and her friends, Olive Oyl, Popeye, Swee'Pea, Pudgy the Dog and KO-KO the Clown.
Betty Boop was created in 1930 by animator and artist Grim Natwick. The original Betty Boop was a redhead with blue eyes and was based on Paramount Pictures top star Clara Bow.
Natwick created Betty for Dave Fleischer and Max Fleischer and their studio the Fleischer Studios. The character became a success in 1932. Max Fleischer promised to return Betty Boop to her original creator after the series had ended but he didn't keep his promise.
After Fleischer died, Natwick tried to sue the Fleischer Studios but he had no proof that he created or owned the character. Fleischer Studios and third-parties made billions off of the character, and Natwick did not get any royalties.
The Fleischer Studios maintain that Natwick's contribution was small, however this was a fabrication lie spread by the Fleischer family to discredit him.
