Black Women don’t you settle!
As a young black woman, I have a lot of goals set for myself. I have a lot of goals set for every aspect of my life from relationships, friendships, careers.. basically anything and everything you can name. The other day I was told that "my standards were too high" and that I "may have to lower them in order to get what I want". Lastly I was also told that a person would be "intimated" by all the things I have and all things I will have in my future. First of all these are things that are told to black women often. I never hear those types of remarks expressed to white women. It's almost as if black women aren't allowed to have standards and that we're supposed to settle. If we're successful or if black women are on their way to being successful they are always told to slow down or be careful because you may make someone feel "intimidated". Plus when they say shit like that it leads to "opposites attract" and "well what if you don't meet people like you, you're going to have to help build them up."(yes that was really said to me). All of that is complete bullshit. If I work hard for for my future and for myself why is it a problem when I ask the people in my life to do the same? Why should I settle? Why should I build someone up? I am not a caseworker so that is definitely bullshit. After thinking about why settling is not fair I decided that I would never settle even when the world expects me to. I decided not to settle because I'm working way too hard to even settle! I'm working towards the things in my life that I want. As a black Woman in this world I feel like it is a revolutionary thing for me to not settle. Me not settling is like me going against the grain and creating a new narrative that I hope all black women like me create.
