The objective of server backup is to keep a copy of all the data safelyto a secure place. There are four major methods of creating the backup:
FullBackup:
All the data backup start as a full backup. It stores a copy ofall the files and folders on a pre-set schedule. In this method data is compressed but even after this the data captures a large disk space. Thus using full backup is good when the small amount of data has to be restored.
Incremental Backup:
In incremental backup, backup of only those files is taken that are modified or created after the previous backup. Therefore it stores a small amount of data every time in result faster copying and less use of disk space and bandwidth.
However, during a restore operation, each backup must be compared to determine that the data is changed replaced with new, otherwise it could result in a lengthy restore job.
Advantage
Backing up process is the fastest
Less disk space is required
Disadvantage
Too much computing overhead required
Differential Backups:
The differential backup works on similar method of storing all the files that have been changed or created after the previous full backup just like Incremental backup. The difference is that a full backup and a differential backup complete the restoration process, whereas every incremental backup requires comparing all the data to check new or changed data to restore.
The difference between incremental and differential backup can be understood in this way:
If a full backup was done on Day 1, Day 2's differential backup will store all the files that have been changed since Day 1's backup and Day 3's differential backup will store all files that have been changed since Day 1's full storage.
Whereas, if a full backup was done on Day 1, on Day 2's incremental backup will store all the files that have been changed since Day 1 and on Day 3's incremental backup will copy only those files that have been changed since Day 2's incremental.
Advantage
Restoring is faster than incremental backup
Less disk space required than full backup
Disadvantage
Restoring is slower than full backup
Backing up is slower than incremental backup
More disk space is required than incremental backup
Mirror Backups:
The mirror backup is similar to full backup with the difference that the files are compressed individually and the latest copy of the file is stored. It creates an exact copy of the backup data. This method does not compress file so it requires less time to backup but needs much larger disk space.
