âNo tan from the neckstrap,â the other boy observed. âPerhaps you donât use one, but you donât strike me as the macho type. Clarinet, then.â
He handed back Johnâs phone; his had supposedly been out of battery, but now John wondered if it hadnât been some weird excuse to strike up a conversation. John didnât recognize him, so he was probably a freshman. âRight,â he said. âSorry, how did you know that?â
The other boy tossed his hair out of his face. âTan lines. You have the particular tan lines on your hand from long hours spent practicing drill in the sun, and a callus on your right thumb from the thumbrest. Theyâre similar enough to the tan and callus one gets from playing the saxophone, but thereâs no tan from using a neckstrap, and while a few players opt to go without, you donât strike me as the type.â
Johnâs jaw dropped. âThatâsâŚbrilliant.â
âReally?â The boy smiled. It made him look younger and more diffident. âThatâs not what people usually say.â
