at the center of it all i do see jannik as someone who just wants to be very good. good at his sport, good for the people he loves and who have supported him, good as a person, ultimately. him saying he wants to spend more time with his loved ones because he wants to be more like them, that as long as he's like them then he knows he is good. jokes about him being competitive about everything like yeah he wants to be validated and successful at everything he does because ultimately he wants to be so skillful and worthy and well-behaved; to have this validation in its most tangible and obvious way: to win.
in the plethora of motivations he has, having reapings as proof to everyone whose sacrificed for him; glorious personal achievement; the simple carnal desire to be victorious.. i think really it is human nature to want to be good in all the ways he has achieved, but also that being so successful in this also necessarily erodes at the more fundamental belief of the innate worthiness of oneself.
anyways this was originally a post about what the darrennik thesis is #tome in that i think he is very good at fulfilling janniks need to be redeeming

It starts off small. Jannik looking a teensy bit unsure at the stove. Jannik getting frustrated when given choices. The lion toy and a worn, weathered looking fox plush appearing in Jannik's arms far more often. Eventually, Darren catches on to what's happening inside Jannik's head. Jannik right now is very much like 4 year old Tahlia Cahill.
Darren keeps jannik away from the stove, getting up and taking the spoon away from jannik, with a gentle rub and a soft request to put something fun on the TV, a tired "I'll take care of dinner, go have a nap". Jannik settles on something that sounds soothing - Bluey. They're Australian, and so is Darren and Darren is soothing so the show is too. Jannik already is falling asleep.
Darren hushes Simone when he comes in too loudly, motioning to Jannik sleeping on the sofa. Simone tucks Jannik in a blanket but doesn't entirely understand what he's walked into. Dinner is very different from usual. Chicken nuggets, roast potatoes, mash. Stuff jannik can eat but also supports the tennis lifestyle. Darren wakes jannik up, gets him to eat, then runs a bubble bath and helps jannik get into the bath.
Simone is tasked with finding the comfiest clothes for jannik to sleep in and gets a scolding when all he can find is sweats. He's then tasked to go out and get a soft, fleecy affair for jannik instead.
Jannik is very agreeable once he's had a bath. Darren looks at how to look after jannik's hair and does what he's told by Siglinde, and then gets the new jammies off simone. They're baggy on jannik, making him look small, but he seems happy with the texture. They're a dark navy blue with rainbow stars and starry socks. Darren wraps jannik's feet in bandages to help the broken, abused skin caused by tennis and then pulls the socks on. They put more Bluey on for jannik, and he falls asleep. Darren finds that he likes being papa very much.
