Night Gallery S2:E20, first aired 16/02/1972 on NBC. (I donāt think it ever aired in the UK; the BBC just cherry picked a couple of episodes from a bunch of NBCās mystery stuff and showed them as standalones.)Ā

"You know every story, every wound, every memory. Their whole life's happiness is wrapped up in you... every single second. Don't you get it? Look down the road to her wedding. I'm in a room alone with her, fixing her veil, fluffing her dress, telling her no woman has ever looked so beautiful. And my fear is she'll be thinking, "I wish my mom was here."

Mikeās Murder - Almost too tightly wound for Hollywood
A moody little mystery starring Debra Winger, in a follow up role to her big hits with 'Terms of Endearment' and 'Officer and a Gentleman' that flopped at the box office, but when I caught up with it a few years after the fact on cable, I was struck by what an intelligent unusual film it was, almost a throwback to the more experimental character studies of the seventies. A shame it didn't get seen by more people.
Winger plays a girl with a crush on her tennis coach, who, is a drug deal on the side, which she only discovers after he turns up missing and she begins asking around. Not a traditional murder mystery thriller, but more of a mood piece with neor noir underpinnings, and some good performances, particularly by Paul Winfield as a sleazy record producer. Directed by James Bridges, who directed some nice movies in the seventies (Paper Chase, China Syndrome) but then seemed to get bogged down in the eighties with a couple of laughable flops (Perfect and Urban Cowboy) which also left John Travolta in the dust for several years afterwards.

If you are familiar with Three Mile Island and then you see The China Syndrome, I think you would leave the movie thinking, āwow that could actually happenā.
