Nobody was happy when Bliss hatched.

Not even Genesis, who had been waiting for her to hatch for weeks now.

But Darkseer was. Perhaps it was because she carried her embryo as a surrogate, and her brain translated that into seeing Bliss as her daughter. But despite her mutations, she could only think about how pretty her eyes were. All of them. And the way she flopped around before figuring out how to walk with six legs, and her happy little flapping and lopsided grin...

She was a minor scientist, not very high-ranking. She simply helped with formulas for chemicals and not much else. Genesis and her were good acquaintances so they often chatted, but Genesis got quiet after Bliss’ hatching. She didn’t poke about what was wrong, but one day they were chatting in his office and he finally fessed up.

“I feel like I failed, Darkseer,” He said, with a depressing tone to his voice, “Bliss was meant to be perfect and yet she’s... whatever she is. An abomination.” Darkseer felt protective at those words, but didn’t say anything. “She’ll be dead by the end of the week at least. That’s some hope, and then we can try again.” She excused herself, saying she was going to get more hare from the kitchens.

But when she left, she found the little dragonet by the door, and she seemed spooked when Darkseer came out the door. She froze, wanting to curl around the hatchling but simply paused. Bliss took it as her being scared and started to walk away, but Darkseer stopped her. “Don’t listen to him, little one.. I think you’re just fine. Want to come with me for some food?”

Soon enough, she had a little dragonet following her around everywhere. But she didn’t mind one bit. Genesis seemed jealous at first, but when she was found making powders of vitamins for Bliss’ food she was laughed at. “Really, trying to save her now? Give it up.”

She didn’t.

Soon after that event she fought with Genesis more, insisting that Bliss’ appearance wasn’t her fault but his, and him constantly talking about her being a disappointment was traumatizing. She had advanced hearing. But he didn’t care... And neither did the managers, when she complained.

So one day, late in the night, she gathered her materials into a satchel quietly and sneaked to Bliss’ room, where she was awake and drawing on the wall. “MM..AA?” She bellowed out, and Darkseer shushed her. “Quiet, Bliss. Can you follow me?” She nodded, sticking to her adoptive mother’s side instantly.

She left Combined Wings with Bliss that night, holding her close to her chest as she flew as far away as she could, and Bliss didn’t wriggle or struggle one bit. She even fell asleep in her arms.

Once they found a nice enough cave, Darkseer kept her fed. She didn’t think about how she was definitely a wanted fugitive now, and she’d be searched for on every corner of the continent because she stole away her baby, because technically Bliss was Combined Wings’ property. But she didn’t care.
