Headcanon A:  realistic

He keeps in close touch with Francis Mulcahy, both during the war (they write each other between poker games) and afterward. Sidney’s not sold on the whole concept of souls in general (and he is very much not Catholic), but Mulcahy understands better than most what it’s like to want to ease suffering you can’t see.

Headcanon B: while it may not be realistic it is hilarious

Sidney Freedman, Bisexual Psychiatrist, is married to a woman he absolutely adores (who is also bisexual) and would not trade her for anything, but they have an agreed-upon open marriage that allows them to pursue same-sex partners as they like. Because they’re Modern Like That.

Headcanon C: heart-crushing and awful, but fun to inflict on friends

The Dear Sigmund letters start during WWII. Studying what WWI did to people does little to prepare him for what WWII does to people, for seeing what it does to people. For seeing what it does to his people. And he hasn’t got anyone to talk to about it, not really, not anyone who understands on the same psychological level that Sidney does, so he writes letters to one of the forefathers of his field. They’re journal entries more than they are letters, but the pretense of talking to someone is comforting, even if no one else ever reads them.

Headcanon D: unrealistic, but I will disregard canon about it because I reject canon reality and substitute my own.
