Such mixed feelings about this scene. A truth battle is objectively more interesting than characters just punching while also revealing more about their character, and there's good stuff here.

And then Scott talks about the Darkchilde in the terms established in the solo, which means Illyana sat down and talked through her experiences with him, which I love.

...But this is the Age of Revelation, and Scott basically defeats the Darkchilde but pointing out to her that she's being written out of character.

It's interesting and pretty great to see the version of the Darkchilde form the Magik ongoing on the next X-event. Sure, it's only a variant that probably has no bearing on what happens in the issue, but the more the developments from this run get widely acknowledged across Marvel, the better.

And here we come to the other end of the trainwreck that is Illyana's story in the Age of Revelation.

I'll be for real, I expected that I'd end up coping pretty hard when I got to this bit, but actually having read it, I think my reading is the only one that makes sense.

So Illyana had a daughter? With some dude?

Okay, when? Because this says explicitly that it was Illyana who had the daughter, not the Darkchilde after taking over. But we know that Illyana was killed off pretty instantly at the start of this timeline. So when exactly did she have time to meet this Lyrebird, become emotionally ready to have a relationship and be pregnant for nine months?

Here's this daughter who the Darkchilde makes appear out of nowhere, who is conveniently unable to leave and who conveniently fades away when the supposed father gets his hands on her.

The only reading that makes any sense here for me is that the Darkchilde ensorcelled Lyrebird into believing they had a daughter to manipulate him into doing her bidding outside the Limbo Lands. And when he tries to take her away, she punishes him while still dangling the possibility of getting the daughter back later in front of him. Sucker.

I don’t quite think killing Illyana counts as protecting her.

Now I don’t want to exonerate McKay and Amazing X-Men—this is his event and he set Illyana up for this misery—but he at least paid his bit of lip service to the solo there?

Oh, so we are going to acknowledge that actual good comics exist and the Magik solo handled everything Illyana in this event so much better.

But we're sticking with paying it lip service and then ignoring what it actually means, because it would just get in the way of our cheap titillation.
