RIP former NBA player Darius Morris, died on May 2, 2024 at the age of only 33, due to "coronary artery atherosclerosis."
Cocaine, hydrocodone and ethanol were listed as ācontributing conditionsā to his death, L.A. County Medical Examiner concluded.

Random NBA player of the day - Darius Morris
Using voodoo, blood magic and unicorn tears, a random NBA player from the halls of history is chosen to have a random profile written about them. These can be either factual or just my thoughts on the player. But mostly just bullpoop.
Career stats (so far):

Very much a throwback player, Darius Morris and his style of play would fit perfectly for the 90ās. Blessed with great size for the lead guard position along with tremendous court vision but lacking athleticism and shooting range, Morris exploded onto the scene in his sophomore year at Michigan. Since he improved so much, many scouts were very high on him as he entered the 2011 NBA draft, with a lot of them seeing starter potential here. He was selected in the second round by the LA Lakers.
He was unable to crack the rotation for the Lakers in his rookie year, as they were competing for the title. 2012-13 season was when Morris finally was able to get somewhat consistent minutes, as Steve Nash struggled with injuries. Morris played in 48 games, including 17 starts but was unable to perform at a high level. After two year in La La Land, the team moved on from him. Between 2013 and 2014, Morris was signed to 10-day contracts by the Clippers and the Grizzlies but he was unable to earn a long-term deal. His numbers in the G-League were impressive though and he was often on the short list when teams were looking for short-term relief at the PG position.
2014-15 season was the last time we saw Darius Morris in the NBA, when he dressed up for the Brooklyn Nets. He was part of the team for pretty much the whole year, but he was the third string point guard behind Deron Williams and Jarrett Jack. He mostly played in garbage time. He was waived after the Nets were eliminated by the Hawks in the first round.
***
Even though Darius Morris has struggled to establish himself in the NBA, he has been a very good player in the G-League. In 2016-17 season when he played with the Rio Grande Valley Vipers, he was one of the best players on a team that reached the G-League Finals. His impressive play did not lead into a call-up, however. In January 2018 he signed to play in China, but he was released a month later, failing to impress. He promptly returned to the Vipers where he finished the season.
Morris seems to be one of those players who is just a little bit too good for the G-League but not good enough for the NBA. His numbers with the Vipers suggests a skilled and fundamentally sound player who can run an offence and play within his limitations, which are features that GMs look for in backup PGs. However, he has two distinct limitations that have prevented him to gain a solid foothold at the highest level: lack of athleticism and jumpshot. With these being essentially must have skills at his position nowadays, it takes something special to thrive in the NBA if you are missing those. Staying at school for two more years instead of spending them on the Lakers bench probably would have done wonders to him. While Morris is good, he just isnāt good enough. Now age 27, Morris is likely done developing in a significant way. He will remain a good player in the G-League and he should find lucrative deals overseas, though his limited shooting range might make it difficult for him to adjust to the European game.
Then again, if he starts hitting three pointers consistently all of a sudden, we have a semi-decent NBA backup here. He is that close.
Side notes:
T.J. McConnell and Matthew Dellavedova are in the League, but Morris is not. Goes to show that sometimes it is about being at the right place at the right time, as Morris is better than either of them. In my opinion, at least.
