Somewhere in the West
Continuing my month long series of posts with images made in New Mexico with the Great Divide as my focus or jumping off point: just two more images from Magdalena once the sun had come up and I was getting ready to split town.

Somewhere in the West
Continuing my month long series of posts with images made in New Mexico with the Great Divide as my focus or jumping off point: after shooting at the Very Large Array the night previous, I was awakened by a barred owl hooting at dawn. Upon looking out my window, I knew that I should throw on some clothes and walk around my environs, Magdalena, New Mexico, with camera in hand.
The first image was made at my hotel and then I wandered around a bit nearby. As I think I said in an earlier post, Magdalena has seen better days, but I do love places like this. Both dawn and dusk in New Mexico seem to hang on for a long period of time.

Somewhere in the West
Continuing my month long series of posts with images made in New Mexico with the Great Divide as my focus or jumping off point: road signs along US Highway 60, twenty-two miles west of Magdalena.
I made this image while desperately trying to shoot the dishes of the Very Large Array against the dying sunset. I happened to turn toward the east and saw how the back of road signs reflected the dimming embers of dusk in the west.
At the time I thought it quite stunning, but only squeezed off two frames and I was frantic to shoot the VLA. I'm glad I did that as I'm quite happy with the effect. I can now look for this in the future when in the field.

Somewhere in the West
Continuing my month long series of posts with images made in New Mexico with the Great Divide as my focus or jumping off point: this is the Very Large Array, twenty-two miles west of Magdalena (and not terribly far from the Divide).
The Array is comprised of 27 operating dishes which are spread out in three directions across the Plains of San Agustin. A corresponding double track railroad runs alongside; the tracks are used by a special device that can lift one of the monstrous dishes (82 feet in diameter), along with its stand, and haul it back and forth, to and from, a huge shop building for servicing. There are 28 dishes total, with one always in the shop. For a sense of scale, note the size of the pickup truck below.
It's intriguing to watch as all the dishes move in unison to point this direction or that. I timed my visit at the end of day thinking I could shoot while the sun set, and a fine New Mexican sunset it was.
The Artemis II mission was happening at that time, and I wondered if it might be involved with that, but know not. The Array was featured in the 1997 film, Contact, but I think it's more about researching quasars and the like rather than listening for intelligent life, but I could be wrong. Go here to read more about this fascinating research site.

Somewhere in the West
Continuing my month long series of posts with images made in New Mexico with the Great Divide as my focus or jumping off point. This was my motel for one night: the former High Country Lodge, now called the Magdalena Motor Inn. I'll have plenty of images of Magdalena, a small town really, coming up in subsequent posts.
